Dragon Quest Heroes: Torneko's Mystery Dungeon -Classic HD-

Resigned to a sizzle reel in the just-concluded Nintendo Direct, 1993's inaugural Mystery Dungeon game makes its English-language debut... right now, in fact, once the various storefronts update, as it is available on largely everything. A big win for roguelikes, given that this is the progenitor of one of their most enduring evolutionary branches, and for which the designation is still accurate beyond marketing jargon.

I am glad that this has happened and I will be doing my part in hopes that the sequels follow suit.
My dream is an all-claymation Torneko: The Last Hope but I'd be happy even if it just got this treatment.

I still haven't played the past 2 Shirens... Also it's interesting to me they're branding this as Dragon Quest Heroes.

Unfortunately it sounds like this remake has lots of issues, from an unresponsive UI to general and universal game engine delay for nearly any action that occurs, and other assorted bugs. A real dampener for what should've been a triumph.

Yeah, I've been enjoying the game but it's in spite of the issues. It's gonna need some patching.

I've only noticed issues when talking to people in the town or shop or whatever... In the dungeon, it seems okay. Having fun with the game, regardless.

Got the Chest of Cheer this morning and got back to level 20 before getting killed. So close!

What a run I just had - and I cleared it! Went in just with the free large loaf!

I just let some bag o'laughs take a couple grand for me in the higher floors because I was out of items and I had to get the heck out of there. That said, I think the Chest of Cheer gives you unlimited food, as I stopped getting hungry when I picked it up, and I didn't have one of those rings that does that.

That said, it felt like the game knew I had the Chest of Cheer and started messing with me on my way back out of the dungeon. I ran into three monster dens on the way out - two were dangerous, one on 4F just felt like a troll because no way was anything in there gonna kill me lol. But the other two both had, among other things, Rockbombs in them, and while they don't do much damage just from regular attacks, if they explode (which is inconsistent - sometimes, I'd just kill them and they'd die without exploding, other times it'd just happen), and you're nearby, you will be automatically reduced to 1 HP. And if there happen to be two exploding Rockbombs nearby? Dead. So I couldn't just spam Bang Scrolls, not that I had enough to handle the six monster dens I ran into in the whole run lmao. Sanctuary Scrolls feel broken - only an exploding Rockbomb can destroy a placed one, and only some of the monsters special attacks can hit you while you're standing on one of those. I cleared two monster dens with those, it was really touch and go for a while there.

I haven't gone back into the dungeon yet, there's apparently more floors, but thankfully whatever items you had with you when you rolled credits go into your storage. Thank god they do, too, because I had some pretty good stuff - another Dragonsbane, and a Liquid Metal Shield +3, although by the end of the run not a whole heck of a lot else besides cash lmao. I think I can still upgrade Torneko's shop, too, and the game is fun as heck so I'm gonna keep playing. Great game!

of note, the entire game is wrapped inside Unreal Engine 5. while the last Shiren game used Unity (and was partially built off of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX)

over 380 megabytes of the game's filesize is just taken up by the FMVs of the opening and ending cutscenes alone.
