Do any of you do pixel art? Asking for some pointers.

So I tried to pick up some art on a whim, but, well, didn't find the process of making it very compelling. I banged out some mediocre-ish pieces here: https://www.instagram.com/count_revier/ but lost the interest to continue working on my skills. However, of late, I've been finding myself intrigued by the prospect of drawing pixel art, especially art that would mimic stuff from my favorite games. I tried recreating Warren Moons' portrait from Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen...and immediately got stuck, as it was far more detailed than I had previously perceived! So.....

1. Do any of you do pixel art?

2. How do you recommend I start out "learning the ropes", so to speak?

3. Is there any particular piece of software you recommend? I know asesprite is often cited as the "go to" application for the purpose, but it costs money and I'd like to start with a free application that still gives decent results, if possible.

Thanks in advance.

I used to use Graphic Converter for everything but newer versions are weird and trying to be photoshop. Piskel isn't bad, and it's free, specialized, good at spitting out a consolidated sheet.

As far as advice goes... pick some arbitrary restrictions on image size and color palette/max colors in an image, try and draw something/someone like that, tweak stuff until it looks OK, then see what else you can do with those same restrictions sticking with the same general style?
