Digital Down-Low for 10/23/2020: Toy War-y

Octopus Prime

If you think about it, the opposite of a prospector is an amateur-spector, and that's just another way of saying "ghost".

Outpost Delta is how I choose to kick things off this week, since it's the first thing I saw in the eShop that made me go "Oh, okay!". It didn't make me do that super enthusiastically, mind, but that's mainly because explore-em-ups aren't as rare as precious gems anymore. Still looks spiffy, mind; and it's got all the hallmarks of... well.. Metroid Fusion; scamperin' through a space station chockfull of different biomes and ailyums and getting upgrades and having a computer yell at you because you're a proactive outer space boss-lady. May well keep this one in my back pocket and wait for some impressions

And speaking of new games in very specific sub-genres that were once precious candy and now the basic bartering supply when divvying up Halloween loot; Scourge Bringer is a roguelite platformer. Unlike the previous game, it's not-at-all related to the forgotten GBA/DS troid-em-up Scurge Hive. From the screens, I'm inferring it's like Flinthook, except without the grappling hook or time control. Which was... like... all of Flinthook.

So what we have here is a new game that reminded me of two otherolder games that I have a lot of affection for!

And heck, since we're talking about things that remind me of things I liked from earlier in the decade, Horace stars a guy who looks a lot like Cartilage Head. Way more chipper, though, and presumably not about someone who proves themselves a coward who would desert a dying man. It's a multi-genre mash-up-up that I suppose is more platformer than anything else. Take a little creepy-faced robot butler on an adventure to reunite with his family. Also, the Golden Girls are there for some reason.

And if you want your heartwarming adventure games to not involve robots or jumping, how-bout Luna: The Shadow Dust, it's more point and clicky. Kids love pointing and clicking at stuff, right? It's one of their top five favorite things, in my experience. It's also got some stellar visuals, too, if that affects how much kids love pointing and or clicking at things any. Surely it doesn't hurt.

And if you want your adventures to be heart-breaking instead of heart-warming, that's what my gut says about The Red Lantern. Enjoy scenic "Somewhere cold in Alaska", with some Good Dogs and little else and try to survive for as long as Nature opts to allow you. You may also shoot some deer, according to several of the screenshots, and also Pet Your Good Dogs.

I talked about Torchlight 3 last week, when it was on everything except Switch, and you expect me to talk about it again, just because now it IS on Switch? Well, you got another thing coming, buddy! You can either look up last weeks thread or make up your own blurb on your own time!

Oh heck, I can't stay mad at you guys. It's a Diablo-esque loot-em-up that was made by former Diablo peeps the first two times, but I have no earthly idea if they worked on this one. One guy summons trains as a form of magic.

Supraland is a puzzley-shooter thing that looks equally incredibly charming and also basically like Toy Story (presumably with less existential dread) as you're a little Gumby-guy in a literal sandbox world trying to make an audience with the child who plays with you and thus controls your world.

Transformers: Battleground is the last game I know about liting this week, so I'MMA DOING IT! It's a Transformers themed SRPG that's specifically based on the Cyberverse continuity, so that's three big marks in its favor in the ol' Octopus Prime Kindly Regard bank. On the other hand, the Transformers SRPGs of the past have been kind of... mediocre at best. But that's still above average for games based on the franchise. In any case, take your favorite metamorphic dudicuses and have them beat up your other favorite toys who do terrible things to one another, because they don't play together nicely, ever.

So more stuff DID come out later in the week, and while most of it isn't worth commenting on (close your eyes and picture the junk that clogs the eShop... you have now pictured all of them), a couple look genuinely noteworthy so I should mention them! In fact; I should have mentioned them a few days ago, but here we are.

Firstly, this weeks arcade release is another VS System game; VS Soccer! Now, as all those superfans of that wonderful kickboy game know; the original Black Box NES version of that game was pretty barebones and didn't have much to recommend about it. BUT! What if there was a variant of Soccer where you LOSE points as long as the other team has the ball. Which... I can only imagine doesn't do any favors to a game with, like... one point scored per match.

And on the other end of the spectrum WRT potential enjoyment; we've got Pumpkin Jack, which looks... a lot like Medieval. Or perhaps Maximo, whichever of those strikes your fancy more. An early 2000s platformer of some stripe, certainly; you're a Man-o-Lantern tasked by old scratch to wander through a Halloweeny town and just cause a big ol' ruckus, double jumping and ground-pounding your way through an army of skellingtons of gerblins. It looks like a lot of fun, and I've heard lots of praise heaped on it, so I'mma gamble on this sucker.
