Digital Down-Low for 10/03/2025: Blame Yourself, or the Stars

Octopus Prime

Mystery Contraption
(He/Him)
Why do the Power Rangers masks all have pouty lips built into them? They don’t kiss…

Putting our best foot forward this week and starting off with what’s not only arguably the biggest release of the week, but is still considered one of the best games of its whole range genre; Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles! A gussied up re-release that gives a mild visual overhaul, new localization, voice acting and a healthy smattering of QoL improvements to the Street Fighter 2 of SRPGs (It didn’t create the genre, but it certainly codified it).

Take young Ramza Beoulve on a journey to learn that absolutely everyone with even a modicum of social power is a complete monster, sometimes literally. And, because there’s voice acting now, finally solve how mystery the heck his name is supposed to be pronounced.

The *other* Big Dog gussied up re-release this week is Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 (either bundled together or separately, depending on your preference); two of the best 3D Mario platformers that Nintendo has been weirdly coy about re-releasing until now. Well THOSE DAYS ARE OVER since here they are, in 1080p and *not* sidled with a limited time window of availability, like the last time Mario Galaxy was released.

They’re Mario games, so you know the score overall, but this time most of the levels are on tiny bespoke Little Prince planets with weird gravity that you can hop between, hunting down stars because their Star Mom got her house robbed by Bowser.

Now if Super Mario is entirely too whimsical and you want bizarre horror to go with your impossible biomes, how about you turn your attention over to Mouthole, a spooky walks-em-up where you're exploring your house. And your house happens to be contained within your own mouth. And all the inhabitants of your house, inside your mouth, are weird broken-jpeg guys who all make vaguely unsettling comments, and all the graphics look bad on purpose like an Atari Jaguar game.

Now, do you love RPGs and hate your inability to read Japanese? Well, luckily, the vast majority of the games in that genre get localized pretty quickly since they have a global audience, but certainly not all. And so, to bridge that gap, how about you take a gander at Shujinkou, a Wizardry-em-up where your ability to beat the asses of all the monsters living their best life in a dungeon is to be able to properly translate written Japanese after a demon lord eats the alphabet. But you can also disable the edu part of the edutainment and just wander through a dungeon beating monster ass. Which… kind of undercuts the main selling point, a bit.

And since you just learned Japanese, why not put it to good use, because, yes, there’s a new Egg Console release and this week it’s Aramo. But unfortunately, this week the Egg Console release is an RPG that doesnt look like it has any text that needs translating; so this perfect coincidence is meaningless. This here is a Zelda-em-up, but it was also an early MSX game, so it looks more Intellivision-y than Famicom-y.

OKAY, GO TO BED

Since I bought into the FOMO and bought 3D All-Stars while it was available, I'm thinking about just getting Galaxy 2 separately, but I'm wondering if there's any QOL improvements that would be worth pulling the trigger on both.

We're going back decades for this one! 47 years, as a matter of fact! Didn't expect to time travel in this post, did you?

Squid Alpha reporting in, and Hamster is unearthing Namco's very first arcade video game EVER, 1978's Gee Bee, a block breaker/pinball blender that Hamster implemented mouse controls for with this release! Time to smack some blocks and bounce off some bumpers, folks!

With that, welcome to October!

Wondering the same - although I will admit I've already prepurchased Galaxy 2 lol. Didn't they recently update the All Stars collection, at least for the Gamecube controller to work with Sunshine? I wonder if they updated Galaxy 1 in it as well...

My understanding is that the 3DAS version of Galaxy 1 is more or less emulated, and that the new version is a native port with remastered graphics and some minor control updates (word is mouse mode is supported for the star pointer). It also has 4K support on Switch 2, which I don't thiiiink 3DAS has gotten.

As a 3DAS owner, I'm currently only planning to get Galaxy 2, but this does look to be a somewhat superior, but not uniquely different, version of Galaxy 1.

Maaaaaaaan, I wish they'd bring those updates to 3D All Stars. Really don't want to buy Galaxy again... I mean I clearly don't have to, but that'd sure be nice.

Not only is it Namco's first, it's also the first ever video game developed by Pac-Man creator, Toru Iwatani, who really wanted to work on pinball machines at the time, so this game was made as kind of a compromise. A later game in this mold, Cutie-Q, even has little ghost-like critters in it (Iwatani handled the spritework on this one).

Man, I hope this means they're porting Cutie-Q soon!

It looks like that's been the case since 2020, actually! Don't really know a lot of details on the most recent updates, tho. Just a lot of vague stuff about fixes and adjustments.

@That Old Chestnut That's... interesting, I didn't know you could use a Gamecube controller on a Switch in any way prior to the bluetooth GCN controller they just put out for Switch 2, unless that old Wii U adapter was compatible. I do remember inverted controls becoming available, as Sunshine in particular was just about unplayable for me before that in 3D All Stars lol

The Wii U adapter is how you do it.

...Yoshi controls are going to take some getting used to. They work, but it's less intuitive than the old pointer. I'm very curious how that final level will go lmao

The ports of the Mario Galaxy games are one of those where it's best to simply use detached joycons.

Well, I play primarily portably, so that's only really an option if I feel like playing tethered to a TV, and... well, I don't, usually lol

I have a Switch 1. I use Hori controllers in portable and have since before I moved. When I packed my joycons in a box. That I put in the garage because I didn't think I'd need them again.

Also the tone in my previous post was meant to be faux confrontational but actually jocular.

Also also you were 100% correct. Detached joycons are usually the worst way to play anything but boy howdy are they perfect here. The motion controls are so much smoother than the Wii as well

My god are the Mario Galaxy games, both of them, just delightful. Such a joy to play.

Yeah, the gliding bird level in Galaxy 2 was not fun, but... It's just a blip so far.

Collected 31 stars so far. Would like to keep playing, but I have to work tomorrow.
