Digital Down-Low for 08/06/2021: Ace Combird

Which Hollywood Celebrity was actually an opossum that a witch cursed into the shape of a man? The answer MAY surprise you!

Not really putting the best foot forward this week, as we're starting off with an Idea Factory game; Dragon Star Varnir. As is often the case with Idea Factory games, it's a JRPG with some admittedly nice visuals and is in all likelihood janky to the point of being nearly unplayable and also probably uncomfortably horny.

Vastly easier to recommend to all and sundry is Picross S Genesis & Master System Edition which... well... is a Picross game, BUT it's a Picross game where the pictures you wind up assembling via lateral thinking dot assembly are all from SMS and Genesis games. FINALLY you can draw the Bonanza Brother pixel-by-pixel, just like the great artists of our time did!

The Falconeer IS actually a game I've played a little bit before! But usually just to the extent of me saying "this is very good, but not what I'm in the mood for". It also should not be confused with Falcon Age, a completely unrelated bird-themed video game port on Switch. This'un here is an arcade flight-sim set in a bird-punk fantasy world where you're in a dang ol' birb, flappin' around the sky exploding BAD BORBS with your lightning powered laser-cannons. Like a much more interesting David Attenborough documentary. And it was nominated for a BAFTA award! How many other video games can claim that?

I literally do not know!

Dodgeball Academia was a game I was going to write off at first because I thought it was just another Super Dodgeball alternative (which, in fairness, ain't exactly super common), but then I watched the trailer and NOPE, this here is an RPG with Dodgeball-based combat system that looks to be equal bits Inazuma 11 and OK KO

Speaking of games that I thought were one thing but are actually Action RPGs, we have Dreamscaper! Which looks to be KIND OF a Hades-kinda thing, with a Typical Millenial Gal who constantly has dreams about traipsing around a haunted MIND ZONE full of monsters and puzzles and the like, and spends all of her waking time talking to friends and pals which translates to stat buffs in your sleepy-time dungeon and beat down the boss monsters who represent social anxiety.

Doomsday Vault is a walky-based puzz-em-up as you're an astrobuddy tasked with exploring a wrecked earth to look for weeds and the like to furnish your safety vault and renew your supply of sustainable food. It's far more cute than the description would imply!

One of the bullet points is "Helpful Plant Information", SUPER MARIO AIN'T GONNA GIVE YOU THAT!

And finally we've got Spelunker HD Deluxe, which is NOT the Spelunk I was hoping to receive on Switch at this point in time; but in the absence of Spelunky, I will settle for the one that implies a greater amount of Spelunk! Besides a remake of the original Spelunker, there's also a WHOLE HEAP of compeititve and co-op modes added in, as well as a Spelunker Randomizer; because if there's one thing the most incredibly brittle platform hero of all time needs, it's a completely unpredictable world to try to navigate.

I guess that's everything!
