Digital Down-Low for 07/10/2026: Groove is Where the Heart Is

Octopus Prime

Mystery Contraption
(He/Him)
There wasnt enough last week to warrant a thread, but with this week we have enough Stuff to Talk About! Also, I have to make this thread on my iPad so expect more spelling and formatting errors than usual. C’est la vie.

And that means starting with last weeks Big release, Rhythm Heaven Groove! It’s the first new Rhythm Heaven game in about a decade and, like all rhythm games, Im fundamentally incapable of keeping a beat and thus, playing it properly. Ah, such is my cross to bear. Regardless, this here is perhaps best described as Wario Ware, if all the games were Tapping the Button At the Right Time, but also with much better audio design.

Now as for this weeks Big Dog, and with this one, there’s quite a few big dogs, and many of them have laser guns bolted to their heads or wear pants! It’s Digimon Story: Time Stranger! The long awaited sequel to the exemplary Digimon Cybersleuth games, which I would describe as a combination of Persona, Pokemon and Reboot, with all the excess yammering removed and replaced by a ludicrously robust monster raising gameplay, and if the monsters were all Trons.

Cybersleuth alone was on my short list of favorite Pokemon-em-ups and the demo for this convinced me to buy it day-one even if it wasn’t.

Speaking of having your day to day life largely focus itself around dealing with unspeakable supernatural horrors, but they’re mostly pretty chill, just weirdos, we’ve got Moonlight Peaks, a Stardew-em-up where you’re a new farmer in town and the town is in Halloween Town and all the people who live there are wharwoofs and vampers and lagoonatics and Bunniculas and the like.

Buy a turnip, befriend a fisherman, marry a horse, all them things that farmers have to deal with every damn day, but now there’s skellymens around.

Now if you didn’t want a cozy life sim about a relaxing job, but *do* like the idea of dealing with monsters with eccentric personalities, we’ve got High on Life 2! I didn’t play the original High On Life since it was advertised heavily as being the game where Justin Roiland plays your talking gun and the idea of him screaming at you for an entire 10-15 hour video game sounds… just… just awful. Plus it came out shortly before he was a Known Crumb Bum so that really reinforced that viewpoint. Luckily, this time he’s nowhere to be seen but we *do* have a veritable whose who of people you’d want to hear in a goofy sci-fi comedy like JB Smoove, Tim Robinson and Betsy Sodaro.

Visit scenic; The Weird Future full of bug creatures and stuff from the ass-end of space and blow them all up. I get some Journey to a Savage Planet/Bullet storm vibes form it and that inference was enough to get it right on my wishlist.

Speaking of games dedicated entirely to the exploding of monsters, we’ve got Granblue Fantasy Relink: Endless Ragnarok! Which I believe is an action RPG based on a franchise about which I know very little! I know one of them is a fighting game that looks like Guikty Gear, but that’s about where my knowledge ends. This appears to be a Monster Hunter, but with much flashier, Bayonetta-y combat.

Visit scenic “An Anime Fantasy Kingdom with too many Kaiju” and blast the bajeezus out of them with up to several friends!

And speaking of having multiple anime characters team up to blast frightful enemy boss monsters, we’ve got Luminous Avenger iX Dual Collection, a gussied up and enhanced collection of the two Luminous Avenger iX games; the much Mega Mannier entries of the Gunvolt series. I personally didn’t think the first one was any great shakes on its own, but iX2 is easily in the upper tier of Inticreates’ Mega Man inspired games. This collection includes a bunch of balance fixes for both games, some new content, all the DLC and 4K visuals if you’re on the Switch 2.

Visit scenic “The Future” and blast apart every cyborg mutant you can find because there’s, like, maybe two total who aren’t mass murderers.

Most I know about GranBlue is it features a high fantasy setting that is heavy on ladies in diaphanous dresses with BIG MCLARGE HUGE horns

Granblue Fantasy Relink is fun, I thought of the original. The story involves way too much of your annoying idiot mascot animal companion, but on the other hand, there's a game-long sidequest to collect tiny crabs like they're mini medals. It's got extreme variety in how the various characters control.

The "Endless Ragnarok" expansion adds a long singleplayer mega-grind to the postgame, as an alternate path to the long multiplayer mega-grind postgame.

The Switch 2 version only goes up to 30FPS (as far as I can tell? maybe there's an option to switch between graphics and performance modes) and you really want to play this thing with as many frames as you can get.

If anybody has a high-quality sample of the text-to-speech system from Rhythm Heaven Groove saying "beep," please send it my way.

The way the characters control feels, honestly, not too far away from Dynasty Warriors. The inputs are simple, movements are smooth and easily canceled, your buttons tend to produce really big effects but the best ones require some setup, there's a couple different kinds of super meter to charge up, and the emphasis tends to be on placement, not timing.

The structure of the multiplayer, where you team up with up to three other goobers and you complete a small, self-contained mission (which may or may not be a big boss fight) in order to grind for crafting ingredients to level up with, is pretty Monster Huntrous, and that's what invited the comparison.

I don't have the energy to do my skits, so here's last week's retro releases:
Arcade Archives - Lady Bug (Universal, 1981)
Console Archives - TRAG: Tactical Rescue Assault Group - Mission of Mercy (PS1, Sunsoft, 1998)
EGG Console - Relics (MSX2, Bothtec, 1986)

As for this week's titles:
Arcade Archives: Hyper Crash (Konami, 1987)
Console Archives: Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure (PS1, Nippon Ichi, 1998)
EGG Console: Hydefos (MSX2, Hertz, 1989)

And I'm sure Octo will cover them all next week, but Nintendo Switch Online got an update today for four games (five in Japan):
GB - Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3, Fortified Zone, The Sword of Hope II
GBA - Dr. Mario and Puzzle League, Tomato Adventure (JP only)

Oh man, Rhapsody. I still have the disc for that game. All in all it’s a fairly slight and breezy JRPG with light tactics elements in the battle system (if I’m remembering right), but the fact that it’s literally a musical is pretty great. It totally leans in to the cheese.
