Digital Down-Low for 07/01/22: A Friendly Game about Pals bein' Buds

Octopus Prime

Mysterious Contraption
(He/Him)
Okay... so... there's a Direct scheduled for the middle of me writing this post. Which is *for once* excellent timing because it means it won't be outdated the same day as I make it. Just gonna sit here, finger hovering over the Post Thread button, waiting for me to know what I missed. And it's a pretty tiny list this week, and that usually translates to a bunch of stealth releases that make me go "Oh DEAR!"

So we're kicking things off with a kind of... err... mitigated new release; since it was released on everything a couple of weeks ago but only showed up in Canada this week; Omori! Which is, of the many RPGs in the last couple of decades to be described as "like Earthbound" is one of the few that people actually agree... y'know... is like Earthbound. It's also not... sunny. That represents 100% of my existing knowledge of the game, and I've got some eShop credit lined up just for it, so *ain't nobody say nothin'*

Anyway; meet your pals and go on a crazy adventure, learning all about the power of friendship.

The Legend of Bum-Bo is up next, and it's an Edward McMillan game (and indeed, a prequel to Binding of Isaac) so... I will assume it's even less sunny than Omori. Just filled with more poops and the like. This appears to be a Puzzle Quest-em-up, with you matching different tchotchkes in order to make them disappear and correspondingly also kersplode a munster.

It's got a legit cool paper-craft art style, which I like, but it's in service of... well... Ed McMillan art so... y'know...

My enthusiasm is mitigated.

Ground Divers appears to be Mr. Driller, in all but name, and also a bit of Steamworld Dig for flavor. You're a little robo drill-buddy tasked with digging deep holes, and using the resources you find busting up rocks/dirt monsters to upgrade your ro-buddy to dig deeper and faster to find more resources to be more dig!

Be All the Dig You Can Be As You Live in a Hole!

And you know what's the opposite of digging a tunnel into the ground? Riding an elevator up! Plato said that, I'm pretty sure. To that end, we have Almost My Floor is a game about JUST THAT! Well, I mean... it's a point and click adventure game about trying to get into your apartment after the entire building gets a nasty cthulhu infestation. But, you know... that's still basically the opposite of a cute game about a robot miner

And finally, we have Gamedec, which, from the description, is Disco Elysium, if it was based on Shadowrun instead of scummy 1970s detective movies. Nothing in the eShop descriptions mentions you can die of ennui in the second room of the game, which represents my entire experience with Disco Elysium, but nothing says you can't, either.

Anyway, solve real murders in fake video games because you're a GAME DETECTIVE, which is... a much more appealing description than the one that the eShop is using.

Hey, Untold Tales, you can use that one for free. I Just did your job for you.

OKAY... that's the primary list; now I'm just going to wait to see what Nintendo directs at me...

[...]

Well, I guess just two more to be added, but one is a DOOZY;

One is The Portal Companionship Collection, which doesn't just bring one of the high water marks of Good Jokesy Games and Good Puzzles games, but it ALSO brings its sequel, which is also that BUT ALSO has JK Simmons.

Enjoy a lovely trip through a state of the art scientific testing lab, and experience a lot of interesting surprises.

And backing up the rear we've got Little Noah and the Scion of Paradise, a roguelite platformer that, y'know... looks fine.

I'm sorry but this is a week with Omori and Portal so... gonna have to work to *wow* me.
