Digital Down-Low for 05/29/2026: The Legend of Nimh

Octopus Prime

Mystery Contraption
(He/Him)
So we're kicking things off with something that I skipped last week assuming it wasn't worth commenting on, but apparently it's got people talking, so I bring it up now; Rune Dice, a roguelite dice-em-up that I assumed was "Basically Slice & Dice, or perhaps Dicey Dungeons", though on closer inspection the rules appear to be completely different. Furthermore, Slice & Dice and Dicey Dungeons are both *hella fun, AF* so any comparison would be a good thing.

Take one of several L'il Fantasy Party Peeps out on a quest to smash up every monster you see by huckin' boxcars at 'em until they cease being an issue.

Moving along we have a game that has the tremendous misfortune of being released alongside two other games I'm much, much invested in, Wall World 2! The sequel to Wall World which I absolutely adored. It's a kind of combination of Space Invaders and Steamworld Dig; you're a miner with a giant spider-tank tasked with exploring and digging in mines for resources, then using those resources to upgrade your mining gear to better gather materials *and also* upgrade your tank since the native flora and fauna of the Wall World tends to be incredibly hostile cthulhus and a giant spider-tank is just the prescription for that particular malady.

Yearning for the mines while shooting down the skies; that's the life for me.

Next up is something that would *definitely* be the biggest release of the week if it were released damn near any other week of the year; Lumentale, which was pitched to me with 2 words. Well... five words, but four of them were an acronym...

Anyway, it's an HD2D Pokemon, and it looks like an HD2D Pokemon and thats it; That's the fastest, most effective way to sell me on a video game. That's the "For Sale, Baby Shoes, Never Worn" of video games. Except you say "Yippee" at the end of it.

Anyway, you're a Guy What Ain't Got No Memories, but what DOES have a real knack for catching and training Combat Varmints which is sure to come in handy since I'm sure there's some nefarious faction that Combat Varmints are well equipped to handle.

Now, speaking of Combat Varmints, we have this weeks Big Dog release; which is, in fact, a Tiny Mouse release; Mina the Hollower, Yacht Clubs first non-Shovel Knight game! Well... unless you count Cyber Shadow, but they just published that. And it looks to be to Links Awakening as Shovel Knight was to Mega Man (with a generous helping of Castlevania for aesthetics), and that means that, without question it's going to be my game of the year.

A tiny mouse with a real knack for professional monster whackin' has a bunch of trap filled monster-dungeons to navigate, Dungeon Items to acquire and a malevolent dark lord to whip to pieces.

It's a wonderful night to have a mouse!

And speaking of undead cute little animals, we have My Little Puppy, the video game I am least likely to play, ever. It's one of those Little critter sandbox games, like Little Kitty Big City or Untitled Goose Game, except INCREDIBLY heart breakingly tragic as you're the ghost of a puppy patiently waiting for your owner to die so you can spend time with them again.

OKAY, GO TO BED!

I don't have an update yet, but I do adore Octo's uncanny ability to completely ignore mainstream releases like 007 First Light with these threads. It's refreshing and don't you ever change, buddy.

I'm sure Octo has a good Simpsons in mind for 007 when it comes to the Switch 2.... whenever they finish the port

I literally just looked at the game's splash image of a corgi with a halo in a pastoral setting and found myself tearing up. Sorry devs; I bet your game is a touching story about love and grief and healing, but I won't find out!

With a Dragon Quest presentation on the horizon, my morning has been compromised, so here's a short recap of this week's retro releases:

Arcade Archives: Ace Driver (Namco, 1994)
Console Archives: Geki-Oh ShienRyu (PS1, Warashi, 1999)
EGG Console: Hercules (PC-8801, Kogado Studio, 1986)

Put in about 3 hours into Mina the Hollower so far. The early game is tougher than it probably should be but a few upgrades in and it kinda clicks into place. Despite what it looks like, it is not exactly a cozy, breezy time. Link's Awakening it ain't.

Yeah it’s got more Bloodborne than I was expecting.

I mean, I was expecting some, from the aesthetics and all, but in terms of beeps and boops as well
