Digital DOwn-Low for 05/01/2026: Spring is in the R

Octopus Prime

Mystery Contraption
(He/Him)
Kicking things off with a couple of surprise Switch 2 updates that snuck out last week, Lorelai and the Laser Eyes, the walky spooky puzz-em-up that I infer is like a combination of Resident Evil and The Seventh Guest doesn't really benefit so much from the upgrade but the rhythm based score attack game about masked bandits stealing treasure and hearts, Sayonara Wild Hearts absolutely benefits from the performance boost and gets some snazzy new gameplay modes as a result.

Now it is, of course, later on a Tuesday morning in late April, the Witching Hour, and so it's only sensible that the next game mentioned is an extra spooky *yikes em up*. And you just bet your sweet bippy that means "wandering around a dark scary enclosure with no idea why you're there and with unspeakable monsters all around you. And, of course, why settle for *one* of those when you can have two! Amnesia Rebirth is the latest (?) in that series where you're stuck in a creepy desert ruin that got a few too many cthulhus in it for my liking, while Total Chaos opts for a good old fashioned Abandoned Coal Mining Town where everything got killed because the miners dug up something besides those incredible rocks that Santa Claus prizes so highly.

Speaking of unspeakable violence in a first person perspective, but much more colourful and gleeful, we have Mullet Madjack, a frenetic FPS that made some waves a few years ago but now it's on the Switch so I am more obligated to pay attention to it! Based on the trailer, it seems to be a combination of Madworld Neon White and Crank 2: High Voltage; you're a guy who needs to constantly refill his adrenaline to keep your heart beating as you're constantly ten seconds away from death, and luckily, there's a murderous gameshow where you're encouraged to murder the absolute holy bajeezus out of Bad Guys as quickly as possible to refill your rapidly dwindling supply of heartbeats.

Now, of course, one of the most noteworthy aspects of the Rogulite genre is how unpredictable, and often luck based, everything in the game winds up being. And to that end, it only makes sense that there be a Roguelite based on the most famously unreliable and unfair arcade game; the Claw Crane. TO WHIT we have Dungeon Clawler, the difficult to pronounce roguelite where you're a rabbit (not a kitty as I had assumed) who has to successfully play a Claw Crane game in order to battle foes, and also upgrade your little bunny-man with new kinds of Crane Claws that have unique traits.

I can not envision a video game I would find more frustrating on its face!

Now, perhaps you're in the mood for a more traditional kind of RPG that resembles a Gameboy title. And maybe the central gameplay could revolve around catching and raising monsters. And, moreover, perhaps your desire in playing one is to feel like you're the best, perhaps like no one ever was. It's impossible to consider such a game existing, of course, UNTIL NOW! Monster Crown: Sineater is out this week and it is some manner of game about having a pocket full of monsters, of which all may be caught raised and trained. I tried the original Monster Crown and admittedly bounced off it, but this one looks pretty spiffy and has some monster designs that I really dig, so I'm willing to give this a shot.

Speaking of Brand New Games that Look Like Brand Old Games, we have a new Picross game out and it's one entirely based on Old Video Game Spritework; Picross S Konami Antiques, and... uh... nothing else to say about it beyond that. Looks like most of the puzzle selection is Mega and Color Picross so... that's not how you sell a Picross collection to me...

Moving on to a to another Older Game, but not, like, *that* old, is Ys Memoire: Revelations in Celceta. Which I *think* is a gussied up port of Ys 7, but it may be a spinoff of that game. I do not know and the eShop is cagey beyond saying that it was released before 8. Nevertheless, it's an Ys game, so chances are pretty good that it's about Adol and Dogi getting shipwrecked somewhere and having to beat the absolute bajeepers out of a local evil God and having the first blue or blond haired woman he sees fall in love with him while the best soundtrack you've ever heard blares in the background.

And finally, we have the obligatory Weird Old Re-Release of the week, and it's a head-scratcher indeed; R-Type DX: Music Encore which is a re-release of the Gameboy and Gameboy Color port of R-Type and R-Type 2 BUT... with a new soundtrack. R-Type DX stood out as being one of those ports that's hardly the best way to enjoy the game, but certainly punches well above its weight so it getting a fancy re-release is hardly surprising, but going so far as to re-record the soundtrack, still using a GB soundchip, is as impressive a decision as it is baffling.

And so begins the incredible Spring of the R-Type.

OKAY, GO TO BED

Amnesia: The Bunker was the newest Amnesia game in the series back in 2023. Amnesia: Rebirth debuted back in 2020.

Busy bee mode today so here's the retro games:
Arcade Archives: Cyber Commando (1994, Namco)
Console Archives: Rohga: Armor Force (1996, Data East, 32-bit)
EGG Console: Nada

Music Encore is looking like a very welcome re-release of R-Type DX to me. The original Game Boy versions, and their DX compilation, run out of music after stage 2 in both games, and simply loop those two tracks for every stage thereafter. Getting an authentic take on the full soundtracks implemented into the games--which are quite good ports--is a treat.

Not consoles/Switch, but both Motorslice and early access for Alabaster Dawn are releasing this week.

Playing Motorslice now, and being big into Prince of Persia, Ico, and Shadow of the Colossus in my college years this is just what I was wanting out of it.
