Well, March went out like a lion, and as every schoolyard baby knows, bats are the lions of the sky. Therefor, the most significant release of the week is a game about that kind of person who is most easily described as some kind of Batman; the vampire. TO WHITT, after years of begging, and pleading, and holding my breath until I turn blue and stamping my feet wefinally *finally* got a brand new Legacy of Kain game! Legacy of Kain: Ascendance is a 2D side-scrolly style LoK game that looks to owe more than a bit to Castlevania (unsure if it's a full on Troid, or a level-based affair). I've deliberately avoided learning anything else about the game so I can see it with fresh eyes, but I do know that it takes place sometime between Blood Omen 2 and Defiance and that besides Self-Imposed Vampire God-king Kain and Drama Kid Fail-son Raziel we've also got a THIRD main protagonist in the form of Angry Lady Vampire Elaleth.
They also got all the original voice cast back. Presumably except for Tony Jay.
And speaking of shape shifting creatures who emerge from the shadows to serve their own sinister ends, we have Darwins Paradox, which is a sneaky sneaks-em-up starring the objectively best animal; the Octopus. You're Darwin, a spy Octopus who has to infiltrate a sinister corporation that is harbouring some diabolical anti-octopus sentiment. Based on the demo, it kind of feels like a Limbo, or Abes Odyssee kind of deal, but with a much more Loony Tunes sense of humour. A Hundreds of Octopi, if you will.
It's not really the kind of game I would enjoy playing but absolutely is my jam in every other possible regard.
Speaking, instead, of games where an animal with unusual abilities are not where society would prefer them to be, we have Goat Simulator 3. Which... uh... well it's self explanatory, really; it's Goat Simulator 3. One of the grand-dames of the "Animal Bastard" genre, alongside Untitled Goose Game. Except with a certain caprid flavour that many find exilerating.
Stay a while and goat for a bit, why don't you?
And speaking of games where I would just die over and over and over again, and people who are not me would have the time of their life in the attempt, we have the return of one of the grand-daddies of the Brutal Platforming genre; Super Meatboy 3D! Which appears to be... Meat Boy but now with the added hurdle of there being a whole third visual axis to contend with now.
And speaking of games where death surrounds you at every corner, that's one of the aesthetic vibes I associate with New Orleans! In South of Midnight, The largest Easy of all has a real problem with supernatural horrors and, as it turns out, you're the latest in a long line of witchy-peeps who have a duty to keep them from getting a little too... people-eat-y. And naturally, what follows is a lot of Cajun flavoured Prince of Persia-y platforming and storytelling that is about as likely to wreck your body as your heart.
Sidebar, the eShop description does not actually say the game takes place in Louisiana, but I certainly inferred that much from the trailer.
And finally we have a retro release that snuck out last week and is at least partially very exciting; Marvel MaXimum Collection is a collection of 6 Marvel licensed games from the 8 and 16 bit era, with 13 ports between them. Which *sounds* pretty good but... uh... most of these are not great, so temper your expectations a fair bit. The big dog is, of course the X-Men Arcade game, and to a lesser extent, the Avengers arcade game (and its attendant ports), but there's also Maximum Carnage, Seperation Anxiety, Arcades Revenge and Silver Surfer.
...that one at least had Dave Wise music so it sounds great.
OKAY, GO TO BED!
