By far the weirdest and most off-putting choice in this remake is to have the player grunt and groan with every action they take.

I didn't even notice that. I guess two generations of that as a "realism" design choice in AAA games has inured me to it. I only really notice stuff like that when the panting-while-running gets a little too pronounced (e.g. MGS V and Horizon Zero Dawn).

My hope that the remake will do justice to the music of the game is fading fast; the minimalism, restraint, and dissonance of the original OST is just too far outside what is considered good fantasy music for what is now a very mainstream series. I need a better look at more of the designs to assess the art direction.

The change I'm most peeved with is the decision to recast the Maiden in Black with an actor aping the original performance but just slightly worse -- both because it's going to genuinely annoy me and because it's a small enough thing that it makes you look like a bitter crank to complain about.

We'll see in a couple months.

The gameplay looks wrong in the trailer but I don't know if that's just because they turned off things like "poise" and "enemies having more than one 1 HP" for the video

Okay, I just noticed this, and I'm not going to stay quiet about it: whoever added the "need sticky white stuff" thread tag, know that what you're propagating isn't "innocent" jokey innuendo referring to awkward in-game terminology but the longstanding dynamic these games have cultivated as mediums for virtual harassment and the active normalization of such. You cannot play any of the games in the FromSoftware catalogue that allow for anonymous player messaging without them being used to act out misogyny and other bigotry in the language framework the preset tools allow; it's an universal component of the online features of the games and how the playerbase uses them. It's why I stopped long ago ever playing any of them online if the option is given. I absolutely do not need or want to encounter chuckling about euphemistic semen anywhere where that consent isn't given, and least of all on a forum that by its own admission should know better. I'm not looking for an apology, or an admission, or anything--just understand that it is a real phenomenon that exists in these games and is a source of alienating, othering discomfort or worse for parts of the audience that don't find any of it humorous and have been subjected to it for years.

And that's why I wish Demon's Souls PS5 didn't have online functions!

After a well-reasoned, impassioned complaint has been made and the mods have sanctioned that complaint with action, it does not seem to be the time to gripe that people are just being oversensitive.

Sometimes it feels alien posting here when people get offended by references to the original release. I always just eyerolled at those markers on the ground; "yup, teenagers sure play this game."

What is an eyeroll to you or me is not an eyeroll to everyone. Peklo's post prompted a conversation between myself and my wife earlier - she pointed out to me that it's not just about not seeing semen references in a game, it's also about feeling unwelcome in a space, and that those types of comments/jokes/whatever encourage worse harassment. My wife doesn't find the reference funny even after I explained it to her, but it goes beyond that - it's about the reference making someone - Peklo, and also my wife - not feel welcome playing a game/existing in a space.

Thanks for your post, Peklo.

you can go back and forth about the originaI item name - I personally think that it's an unintentionally unfortunate translation and referring to the name in a neutral way is fine - but it's really not up for debate that the memes and jokes using the original item name were a juvenile reference to semen and really should be avoided

SL, I actually scrolled up to remove it halfway through reading Peklo's post. (I do wish I'd gotten the chance to do it myself, but that's academic at this point). It's not about what I think about the joke when it negatively affects others.

I had my reasons why I thought this particular reference would fly, but I was wrong and should probably not make assumptions like that in the future.

Demon's Souls never had poise! I kinda hope it does in this remake though because honestly it's more of an annoyance for literally every single thing to stagger you no matter how small and weak and no matter how strong and heavy your armor; it was also a pretty severe problem in PvP once Dark Souls came out and Poise alone added some mechanical depth to players swinging on each other (I vastly prefer how it's done in Dark 2, 3, and Bloodborne though). It seems like maybe the riposte is a bit slower? But the animation itself is fine. I think what's off about the gameplay for me so far is the movement speed. Alixsar pointed out how some of it feels too fast or too slow and I mostly agree. But basic running itself seems slowed down to the pace of Dark Souls which is worrying because one of the defining qualities that keeps me interested in the original Demon's Souls over the Dark Souls games is that it's got a faster general movement pace. That could just also be the encumbrance mechanic though? Tough to tell without seeing more.

Otherwise yeah enemy HP definitely seems like it's not active for the trailer. I for sure don't remember nearly everything in the tutorial just instantly dying on a single basic swing.

Wondering what changes they are making -- for one I'm pretty sure Blue Eye Knights weren't in the tutorial area before

There was at least one, for the tutorial prompt about using heavy attacks to break its guard. There might've been a second one for parry/riposte too? It's been a while since I've gone through it. The last new character I made was right before they pulled the plug on the servers to rush the Old Monk and get one more of its helmet drop for fighting a player during it.

Thank you for removing the thread tag.

For anyone that's interested in the perspective I'm coming from in how anonymous online messaging and gender play out in Souls, try reading this Kotaku piece by Ario Elami from two years ago. I did not write it, edit it, or publish it, but I'm willing to say my and others' experiences served as material for it, through conversations with the author and otherwise. It's not so old to be outdated in the information or opining presented in any way, but nonetheless everything discussed remains exactly as described to this day: these past few weeks I played through the Dark Souls trilogy again, where II is the only game of the three that doesn't have a simple "play offline" toggle in its configuration options, and so I had to interact with the online populace. In front of every woman, there is harassment; in front of every environmental object that can be somehow linked to a woman, there is harassment. Many frame themselves as the kind of "lighthearted" hee-hee-butthole wordplay despite the inherent associations to assault, but some drop the artifice even in the limited context of what the messaging allows for and make sure you understand they are talking about rape or imprisonment of specifically women, as described by the messager. II might be the worst for it for a confluence of factors, or it might not be, but every game I've seen it happen, and it continues to be specifically celebrated by the userbase, through the internal rating systems and in the culture surrounding the games.

If you block an enemy strike with a shield is there literally no reaction?
I wouldn't call that poise in the sense that afaik the mechanic has no effect on blocking, but I don't remember there being much block stun in any of the Souls games unless it was a particularly strong enemy or attack hitting your block. Though I fully admit I never cared for shields in Dark 2 enough to internalize it for that one. I can see some block stun in the trailer, about as much as there was in the original. The big difference is the tutorial Blue Eye Knight not instantly guard breaking with its shield slam. iirc their shield slam doesn't even drain your stamina if you block it, it specifically just breaks your guard in the original.

To echo Peklo: there is a reason I have never played a single Souls game online.

I will literally cut internet from the device to ensure this. I don’t need “amazing chest ahead” right in front of one of the female NPCs, thanks.

did their best!
If only people spent that much energy on much better uses of the message system, like leaving the message "Don't give up, skeleton!" in front of every skeleton.

Also, yes, there were blue eye knights in the tutorial section before, though only in appearance for the most part. They weren't quite as formidable as even the ones in 1-1.

I try to make the online world a better place with hilarious but still wholesome messages and I downvote the pervy ones. I am but a single man, though :(

One of the more insidious tricks of the ratings is that negative ratings just count as having one additional rating by the system's visible components (or at least that's how I remember it working). If they wanted to make the system safer they could at LEAST implement a couple features to prevent certain word combinations and delete a message entirely if it receives like three negative ratings. It wouldn't be difficult to do, Bluepoint themselves could do it no problem. There's no way fromsoft was never made aware of all of it and their lack of action to even as much as mitigate it isn't great.

New info is out:

The bad:
- No direct FromSoft involvement
- No difficulty/accessibility options
- No significant change to world tendency

The good:
- There's a classic camera option (Thank goodness)
- Sounds like they're committed to keeping the experience mostly in tact including enemy ai and behavior with only some exploits (such as attacking through a fog door) fixed while others will stick around.
- No significant change to world tendency!

In the original Demon’s Souls, players could carry hundreds of healing grasses with them and suffer no real penalty. In the remake, players will have a more limited supply, and more powerful grasses (like Full Moon Grass) will weigh more than less effective grasses.

Uhhhhhhhh

“If you like the starkness and the despair of the original PlayStation 3 version, then we have a bunch of filters that you can choose from and play the game [that way],” Moore said. “So if you want to play the game in what we call the classic filter, which harkens back to the days of the PlayStation 3 and the look at that title, then put that filter on."

I wonder how this will actually compare to the original, but at least it's something to address that.

It seems insane to me that this is coming out in like...two weeks or whatever? I feel like we've seen NOTHING about it and barely even anything about the PS5, but maybe we did and that was just lost to me in the haze of 2020.

There's no way in Hell I'm gonna try to get a PS5 right now, especially for one of my least favorite Souls games (it's still good obviously but it is what it is), but I am looking forward to seeing one thing; the Maiden Astraea sequence. That is literally the only thing that matters. If they fuck that up...
