Death's Door: You Reap What You Crow

Beat the first boss. Combat is really fun. Also digging the soundtrack.

Also I guess this is more like Hyper Light Drifter than Zelda. Whatevs.

Beat the Guardian of the Door. It was a good boss fight, but seriously, if you're going to have long, difficult boss battles, give the boss a damn health bar. It's really hard to strategize when you're not sure how much longer you have to keep at it. Even Cuphead shows you how close you were when you die.

The health bar is how cracked up they are
Ah, I see.

In the Witch's mansion now and freed a soul. This game just keeps getting better and better. The puzzles are pretty simple, but that's fine. The devs emphasized the strengths, which are the combat, aesthetics and story.

This game shares a problem with all good games in that it's too good so you know playing only brings you closer to the end.

Beat The Witch of Urns. Much like Souls games, I hate the fights until I love them. This game is much kinder than any Souls game I've played though.

I think I might have said this before in another thread, but I love how this game about crows just straight-up calls its collectibles “Shiny Things.”

Everything about this game is perfect. Except the enemy mob rooms. They are turning into increasingly more garbage fire padding content, and they bring down an otherwise wonderful game to the point that I'm questioning whether it's worth plugging through.

I'm waiting because of Santa Law, but this is very high up on my radar to get crackin' with as soon as possible

I just realized that this game is basically "What if Hollow Knight, but Zelda with birbs instead of Metroidvania with bugs?"

I started this and haven't gotten so far, only an hour or two in, but I am excited to play more. I'm at that early stage of games like this where things are a bit simplistic and plain and I can already start to see the ways in which I'll get better. I think more than just liking what I'm playing now, I'm excited to reach that mid-game stage of a Soulstrovanelda where I have a bunch of cool stuff; the current stage they start you out at feels a bit slow and simplistic. Gimme those abilities!!

The only mechanics note I have so far is that the "plant seeds in pots for healing" is a neat idea but I feel like it could become annoying; I'm not sure what the core concept behind tying your limited healing capabilities to game areas instead of something you take with you is. I suppose it can make exploration a bit more fraught/rewarding since they're kind of like mini-bonfires. But in practice, I've so far experienced it as "inventory management + backtracking." Like, in the estate garden (second area), where I am now, there's one right outside the door/portal to the area and one off to the east(?). I did one of those rooms with the swarms of enemies coming out of doors, was down to 1 health, and needed a heal, so I had to backtrack to one of the pots (and figure out which one I wanted to use; I went with the farther one so that the next backtrack would be a bit shorter, although to the game's credit it's so far been very good about opening lots of shortcuts and clearing routes. But knowing that the next heal I'll need will involve backtracking to the beginning of the level and then heading back to where I was... I just think there was a better way to do that? Even if it was just that each plant gives you an item you can use instead of healing at the plant?

Also, I haven't had a huge problem with them yet, but the 3? enemy swarm rooms I've done so far have been my least favorite bit.

Whoever made the comparison to Hyper Light Drifter was on the money, I think; HLD was already a Zeldouls, and this is very much in that vein. (NB: this is a good thing. HLD was awesome.)

The art design is definitely cute and fantastic, and I like the writing. My little crow guy twitches his head around in a very crow-like way and it's delightful. The support characters have been nice so far, and meeting Pothead got an audible god dammit! from me. He's my favorite. Spinoff game when. SPINOFF GAME NOW.

Calling my shot on the story ahead of time: the designated soul I'm supposed to get isn't the flower or whatever, it's the grey crow himself.

Most of them aren't too bad, they just feel like a not very creative way to pad the game and add challenge. There's one in the second Soul Dungeon, though, that's just the opposite of fun.

Just beat the Frog King. That was, without a doubt, one of the best boss fights I've ever experienced in a video game.

I also want to shout out how incredible the game's score is. There are several amazing tracks, but the music really shows its strength in that, given what I've said before, I should really hate the Avarice rooms, but the music just gets me so pumped up that I can't help but enjoy them.

The "fight a bigger horde" style of encounter design has not been winning any points with me. But I finally got my first spell, then when I was going around backtracking to find stuff I could unlock with it, I found the boss you kill to empower it and got him after a good couple tries. Ended up poking around into the two other main zones available just far enough to get their first doors. Finally went on and headed for the witch's basement, where I'm currently paused.

I've been sticking with the sword after experimenting with the dagger for a while and not liking it. It's faster, but it doesn't feel like it's enough to make up for its lower range and base damage. After I switched back to the sword, everything felt a little easier again. I haven't experimented to see if the fire does more damage than the arrow, but at least now I have the improved fire which gives a DoT burn. (It's relatively weak, like 3 ticks is about 1 sword hit? But especially when I mainly use the arrows to plink away at range in tiny timing windows, that's a pretty solid buff.)

I found the Stranded Sailor bar and the person you meet there is yet another wonderful character. I rate this game: Charming.

At the door to the last boss, but saving it for tomorrow since I need sleep. From a combat perspective, the boss fights are the clear strength of this game, and I'm glad they kept the total low. Each one has an individual strength.

The first two bosses are pretty traditional. But then...

Urn Boss tests your ability to be Ricochet Rabbit Crow

Swamp Boss Tests your ability to pay attention to the details of how enemies interact with the environment.

Mountain Boss Is a pure dodge and strike combat test.

[Redacted] Boss Is an amalgam of the three previous bosses all at once, testing awareness, dodge and strike, and ping-pong-ability

Looking forward to seeing how the Lord of Doors shakes out.

Finished it. What a game. The themes really gel at the end, and the final boss is something else. Probably have more to say later, but it's definitely a GOTY candidate for me.

Started this today, absolutely in love so far. I beat the Witch of Urns and got to the next area before stopping for the night. Every piece of this game oozes charm and I can't wait to play more tomorrow.

Finished the game earlier tonight, loved it all the way through. Found all the shrines, upgraded all the spells, got all the weapons even though I pretty much stuck with the regular degular sword the entire time. Strong GOTY contender for me. I'm considering going for the post-game secret ending, though some of the requirements are a little stiff (not excited to figure out where the four life seeds I somehow didn't plant have to go). If I do, I will use a walkthrough when I feel it's appropriate, because I've got nothing to prove!

The game actually gives you some help with the spoilered thing after you complete the main story.

Not if you don't know where that help is, though. (It's cool, the internet exists and -- of course -- the answer is that it's behind another puzzle I didn't yet solve. Good to know I won't have to retread every inch of every map, at least.)

Alright, wrapping up this one to 100% completion didn't take very long at all, and I'm glad I did. What an excellent game. I'm gonna put this down for now, but maybe if I get bored before my vacation ends I'll try doing an umbrella run to get the platinum trophy. I used magic as my main weapon for most of the game anyway, so I don't think it'd be too difficult to pull off!

Rolled credits on it this morning, dove back in to do the secret ending stuff. I had managed to plant all the seeds before the final boss, though not without a lot of backtracking and re-exploring. I wish I'd know that the doors would glow to give postgame area hints before I did that, but oh well.

Finished the secret ending, got 100%, it's in the bag. All in all, good game! I did find that the secret ending didn't really make much sense on its own, and checked online to confirm my suspicions - it's a vague lore tie-in to Titan Souls, the devs' previous game, but even then it doesn't seem to actually provide that much extra backstory or development.

I'm in the final leg of the witch dungeon and enjoying this a lot. The death screen makes me laugh every time.

Huh! I beat that game years ago, but don't remember anything about it. Can't say I thought the secret ending felt off, but I also felt that the any% ending was perfectly satisfying on its own. Secret ending was fine, didn't really add or take anything away from the rest of the game for me.
