Daft Punk's finished

can stop, will stop

Imagine being in Daft Punk and then deciding not to do that anymore.

Even though I am physically incapable of dancing, they were basically the only band who made me consistently want to. Thank you and goodbye, Daft Punk.

What's Shenmue?
This hit hard, though upon further thought it feels like something a long time coming. They've been largely inactive in for a while… it's already been nearly eight years since RAM, and they haven't toured at all since 2007. Evidently something wasn't working.

Even so, this sucks. Daft Punk were a great duo, and even though they've had a few misses, new projects from them were always cause for excitement. These last years I really thought (or maybe just hoped) they were tinkering away and preparing something new; it's saddening to learn there won't be anything (or at least anything substantial) coming in the foreseeable future.

I saw them at Lolla in 07, and it was probably the best concert I've ever been to. It was transcendent. And, as it happens, someone just uploaded footage of that concert:

I had hoped that we'd get another album from them, but I guess it's not to be.

The Tron Legacy soundtrack is my perfect flow album. I used it when training for a marathon for my long runs. Just put it on repeat and start running. It helped the miles and time just flow by.

Gonna be honest, I breathed a sigh of relief when I opened the thread and read they had only split off. I thought they had been milkshake duck'd or something.

Still, though, echoing sentiments all around, their music is consistently in my work/study/drawing rotations and that "phew!" turned to "awww, man" pretty quickly.

It's a daft decision.

Discovery is easily, without question, the album I've listened to the most in my life. Human After All is #2. I was literally talking to my patient yesterday about "bands that are now broken up that you wish you could've seen live" and it sucks that DP is now on that list.

All things considered, aside from the initial shock, I'm handling this well but my favorite band of all time just broke up and that fucking sucks. I mean, they've only put out one album and one soundtrack since 2005 (and I guess those new previously unreleased Tron tracks that came out a bit back) so it's not like it changes my day-to-day operations very much but just like...the idea is really shitty. The idea that two French guys pretending to be robots aren't out there doing that sucks.

Anyway I hope they're doing well.

This sucks. But at least Random Access Memories feels like a fitting close to their career, a sort of full circle opportunity to make music alongside some of their biggest influences.

I would have liked them for the amazing robot personas alone but the music was somehow even better.

I'm happy they called it quits before it got toxic or something. Sad though.

I'm glad that it sounds like the the split is amicable, or at least amicable enough to make a goodbye video. I'm sad but if this removes whatever was preventing them from creating new things and/or being happy that's very good.

For what it's worth, that Epilogue video is excerpted from their movie Electroma. I do hope things were amicable though.

Man, I turned 8 in 1993. I don't think I really became aware of Daft Punk until Around the World came out, but it's kind of weird to realize that for me there's basically always been a Daft Punk. And now there isn't!
