"But if I must meet mine end, then all shall burn upon my pyre!" - Let's Play Heavensward: Final Fantasy XIV!

The Goofiest Hrothgar
(He/him)
So, I told you that story so I could tell you this story.

MXF5hhJ.jpg

Heavensward is the first expansion of Final Fantasy XIV, and marks patch 3.0. With it came an expanded level cap to 60, three new jobs, new primals and threats to battle, and some would argue the best story of the entire FFXIV saga. With the conclusion of the Shadowbringers story, I would highly disagree with that sentiment, but that's a discussion for another time.

CHAPTER 2 - The Bull

CHAPTER 4 - The Truth
CHAPTER 5 - The Tragedy
-------------------------------------------------------------------

For now, though, as the trailer reminds us all, things look pretty bleak for our heroes. Minfilia, Y'shtola, Thancred, Yda, and Papalymo are all missing in action, as a result of the Scions' flight from Ul'dah.

BCKGaC8.png

Tataru Taru, the Scions' receptionist and bookkeeper, has had little to do without a Rising Stones to manage, and being unable to travel about. She has been developing her crafting skills on the side, however...

G8Tz2x9.png

Alphinaud, the young commander of the Crystal Braves, has had his certitude in his abilities badly shaken. Hindsight is 20/20, and the expansion is, in part, the building back up of Alphinaud into the hero and leader he was truly born to be.

Cq2WIj9.png

The Scions have been staying in the care of Ser Haurchefant Greystone, of House Fortemps, one of the High Houses of Ishgard. Haurchefant has been lobbying the Holy See to grant his charges asylum in the city. The reason why they haven't been granted leave to enter yet is because of Ishgard's focus on the war effort, against the Dravanian Horde.

The Dravanian Horde is a host of draconic creatures (full dragons, wyverns, and the like), led by the Great Wyrm, Nidhogg, who, for 1000 years, has been in a cycle of waking and slumber, waking to attack Ishgard and its holdings.

fU9oJYC.png

For Ishgard's part, it is a city that has grown up in ten centuries of constant war. A theocracy, led by a line of priest-kings, the current of whom is Archbishop Thordan VII.

Our heroes have allies within Ishgard, however, such as the likes of the commander of the Temple Knights, the leader of most of Ishgard's military, Ser Aymeric de Borel, a lowborn Elezen who, despite his station in youth, has earned his stripes in battle. It was he who reached out to the Scions when Nidhogg awakened once again to terrorize the lands of Coerthas. In addition, Satznswys's old 'friend', Estinien Wyrmblood, the Azure Dragoon of Ishgard, will play a pivotal role in the events to come. There are many mysteries that have been left to be explored. For example, what designs do the Ascians have on Ishgard, and how are they manipulating events behind the scenes? Will the Scions of the Seventh Dawn be reunited with their missing comrades? What is to become of General Raubahn Aldynn, last seen having had his arm severed at the Bloody Banquet of Ul'dah that took the life of Sultana Nanamo Ul Namo? And why has the Dragonsong War, as it is known to Ishgard, been going on for a thousand years? These questions, and more, will be answered as the story takes shape.

Everybody got all that? Good.

PdCx08S.png

To resume the story we need only speak with Alphinaud, but once we completed the final Main Scenario Quest of A Realm Reborn, We unlocked the breadcrumb quests to start back with our Job's trainers. For jobs released in Heavensward and prior, every two levels, starting at 50, all the way to 60, have quests associated with those levels, and there are job skills that are gated behind those quests, like when we unlocked Dragonfire Dive on Dragoon, or Perfect Balance on Monk, or Hallowed Ground on Paladin. It's important to keep up with those quests as you progress through the main story, as the skills you earn in Heavensward will develop the jobs that you play, and lacking those skills when running dungeon and trial content severely handicaps you.

LDKfB31.png

"Tataru, I miss Moenbryda too, but I don't know about wearing my hair the same way..."

ubMbiYD.png
xQwZhUi.png

Alphinaud seems to have come out of his weeks-long, or perhaps even months-long funk. The timeline for how time passes is not one-to-one with the real world. Some events are explicitly written to take a certain amount of time after one another, but a lot of this is kept vague to let the player's headcanon be whatever it wants.

48rERdT.png

Furthermore, Alphinaud, your voice has changed. The same can be said of pretty much the entire cast of Final Fantasy XIV. Between expansions, Square Enix decided to go with a British voice acting studio for its English casting, and for the most part, the cast slides into their new roles fantasically. The cast has worked on other games as well, most notably Xenoblade Chronicles.

xoQt7ee.png

Alphinaud insists that he will go to Ul'dah to settle the matters, but that's plainly insane, as Haurchefant is quick to point out.

e54EFan.png

"But now is not the time for drastic action. You yet have allies upon whom you can rely. There is no need to act alone." As I stated upthread, there's friends like the Doman refugees, Pipin Tarupin of the Immortal Flames, the other two Eorzean heads of state...

H1G4CjU.png

Alphinaud asks forgiveness for his impatience.

8d9jKEH.png

I guess all the stuff with the Dravanian Horde has cooled down enough for their request for asylum to be granted. That's good news!

"There we shall carry on the Scions' legacy. There we shall begin anew." That's the spirit, Alphinaud!

With a new expansion comes a new Quest Accepted jingle. A progression of pipe organ chords that we will come to know as the Ishgard leitmotif, and we will be hearing that for the entire expansion!

He's already sent word ahead to the Gates of Judgement to let them past on to the Steps of Faith. They are to meet with his manservant in the city who will escort them the rest of the way to Fortemps Manor.

Since mount flight was added in patch 5.3, you can actually get behind the Gates of Judgement, but there's no way to move through to Ishgard except to talk to the guard here.

And so they came, at a friend's behest. Heroes once celebrated as saviors of Eorzea, brought low through treachery, their names blackened with royal blood...

With memories of the lost and dreams of redemption, with hope yet in their hearts, they came...

To Ishgard, shining city on the mount, overlooking the dominion of Coerthas...

A great and proud nation devoted to Haloe, the Fury, ruled by Thordan VII, Archbishop of the Ishgardian Orthodox Church...

The last bastion of the faith, her walls ever bristling with the swords and spears of her four High Houses...

A land that after a thousand years of war had forgotten what it meant to be at peace. Through gates long closed the Warrior of Light and her companions passed, entering at last a city who's history was written in blood. In the midst of the Dragonsong War they came--three weary travelers whose arrival would set in motion great change...though none knew then how great...

Alphinaud and Tataru are awed.

Sc6S3QB.png

He directs them to the manor house in the Pillars, the upper level of the city.

CF7lgSq.png

This is the lower level of the city, The Foundation, which has suffered a lot of the Dravanian Horde's wrath.

5hh99Ai.png

New expansion, new Aetherytes to attune to!

T38x7MR.png

...and this is the upper level of the city, The Pillars, where the Cathedral to Halone and the manors of the Four Great Houses is. You'll likely recognize their names from our time way back when chasing down the wreckage of the Enterprise.

3PcLCjS.png

Just like the other major cities, there's a network of Aethernet shards to get around on. We're getting a tour of the city a little later, which serves as a great opportunity to attune to them all.

XfILLlD.png

Haurchefant meets the Scions at the door to the manor house, overjoyed to see them in the city and now effectively out of reach of Ul'dah's agents. He says that there's a small reception to welcome them ready to kick off.

And now we meet our sponsor, Count Edmont de Fortemps. Introductions and pleasantries are swiftly made and exchanged.

And Alphinaud broaches the sensitive subject of their fugitive status. Count Fortemps dismisses the concern, saying he can well handle the political fallout of such a course of action.

The Scions make introductions, and while Alphinaud is delicate at the need of sundries and equipment, Elaisse dismisses his concern, as gil spends, no matter where it's minted.

r5Oot2l.jpg

On the way back down to The Foundation, Satznswys overhears a local. Apparently a trial by combat has just wrapped up, with a heretic swinging a two-handed sword.

I8HZuNh.jpg

He says that the heretic fought like a demon from the seventh hell. Someone in the crowd called her a 'dark knight', but he dismisses the thought quickly and nervously.

MoQskhQ.jpg

Satznswys presses him for details. The knight took wounds, and bore the blood of them, but continued to fight as though he showed no sign of injury. It covered her body, and began to form into a mist, something dark and twisted. Eventually, the Temple Knight she was fighting got past his guard and ran him through. After the fight was over, they dropped her corpse in the Brume, where it would likely be picked over and tossed over the walls into the Sea of Clouds by sunrise the next day.

eReuSbk.jpg

Running to catch up with Alphinaud and the others, she sees a knight on the path down to the Brume.

New job, new soul stone, and thankfully, I kept Satznswys's gear from when she was leveling Paladin, as Dark Knight starts at level 30, along with the other two Heavensward jobs. There is no pre-Job class like with the ARR jobs, nor will there be going forward. Yoshi P hated that system and worked to minimize it as much as possible.

Satznswys is geared up in the Steel armor set at level 30, and has a new HUD gauge that will expand as she levels: the Blood Gauge. For now, though, it displays only if Grit, the Dark Knight tank stance, is active or not.

Time to set up hotbars! I'll be going into what everything does in the video downthread. Sorry, Alphinaud and Tataru! I'll be back for the tour once I get Dark Knight to level 50!

72ScleD.jpg
wOqwTFR.jpg

To give you an idea of how weird this timing is, these LORGE SWORDS are pretty clearly inspired by the anime and manga series Berzerk, created by the late Kentaro Miura. I started work on this update the day that the news came out that he passed away.

NvNcoh1.jpg

So Satznswys does her own small gesture with her basic, freshly unlocked DRK gear.

HLLz4AN.jpg
fZebU9b.jpg

Back to Ishgard, and Fray. She says that while the darkness gives one strength, but it comes at a cost. She speaks a hypothetical situation: a venerable, untouchable man, harms a child in unspeakable ways, striding through the very Hoplon Satznswys just walked through, secure in the knowledge that he is beyond punishment. But for one who cuts down that vile beast as he flaunts his freedom, who knows how many more suffer?

E2ArnoZ.jpg

"The threshold we refuse to cross is a line we draw for ourselves. We fear the consequences, and people suffer for our indecision." Those that have borne that Dark Knight soul crystal each came to conquer that fear, and became who they wanted to be, and now it's Satznswys's turn.

vBa8Plh.jpg
icyLCrY.jpg

Whoa, whoa, madam. Slow down. Satznswys is new in town, what's going on here?

gcoXkj7.jpg

The young man next to her bitterly interjects with "He'd take you too is what he'd do. Even if you went and begged the blue bastard to intervene, it'd be too late by then."

AjZwN73.jpg

...don't like where this conversation is going. Fray says they might spare the girl, with a few scars and a lesson.

wO369B3.jpg

...I mean, that works too, sure. Satznswys agrees.

Fray reassures the crone that those knights will not dare trouble her again.

Fray is intense. She's sure that once that's clear, they'll attack or flee, and Fray is eager to find out which. It's at this point that the game interjects to remind the player that they've got a whole 30 levels worth of job kit they've got access to, because we have a tutorial solo duty coming up, with actual combat, so now's a good time to make sure your hotbars are already set up. As you can see, I've already done that, and even future-proofed it in case you dear readers make me play Dark Knight more in the future.

apXNcKZ.jpg

I'll be going more in depth with the skills in the accompanying video. This'll just be for the story quests here.

k5T4pn6.jpg

When Satznswys hits level 35, she gets the new job quest, and gets back in her tin can armor. The head and body position doesn't really work for that ready stance.

3e76vmm.jpg

Also, there are some...strange notes in Satznswys's journal summary of the previous quests.

zD4X24N.jpg

Fray says she expected her tonight, and here she is, ready to pick up where they left off.

dAqyjOM.jpg

Satznswys has the opportunity to ask a question. "What was that voice I heard [when I touched the Dark Knight crystal]?" Fray says it's a good one, but difficult to answer. Some say it's a beacon, guiding the dark knight to her true calling. As for whose it is, only Satznswys can figure that out. As she masters the skill of drawing on her darkside, she'll hear it more clearly.

UHRXJPw.jpg

Fray suggests near Little Ala Mhigo.

v3YilG1.jpg

She explains what she means by 'communion': a ritual in which one nurtures the darkness within so that she may channel it more effectively in battle. It's risky, though. Go too hard on it, and she could die, or worse. Before they begin, Fray asks a favor: to kill something.

zBdFf7T.jpg

So Satznswys goes to an old friend: Gundobald. I wonder if anyone broke the news to him about Wilred's murder. Likely not, since he was found dead, and then basically the Bloody Banquet happened.

DQveol3.jpg

She asks after beasts to train herself against, and Gundobald suggests the Red Labyrinth nearby. The beasts there have been menacing the trappers of Little Ala Mhigo.

bDpVFVj.jpg

Gundobald pauses a moment before continuing that the beasts have been attracted by raw aldgoat flesh.

B8J2KBG.jpg

He regrets his hesitation at intervening in Wilred's efforts to summon Rhalgr. He mentions seeing that same fire in Satznswys's eyes now.

Traveling near Vesper Bay, Satznswys finds an unusual old man that looks like Master Xehanort from Kingdom Hearts. Not sure why he looks like that, but he's got a tasty new feature: New Game Plus!

ot94U2M.jpg
x2vGshL.jpg

New Game Plus is a system that lets you temporarily reset your quest chain progress to the beginning of various quest chains. You get no rewards for completing the quests again, but if you wanted to go back and play the stories once again, you can use this feature instead of rolling a whole new character. A limitation is you are stuck with whatever starting city you selected at character creation, so there is currently no way to experience the other city openers without rolling a new character. You can suspend New Game Plus at any time, and pick it up later, though you only have one "save slot" to work with, so you'll need to either complete a New Game + or abandon it to start a new one.

I might not have mentioned this before, but the Twintania mount is a mount you can obtain by inviting friends to FFXIV for Gold Chocobo Feathers. If Binding Coil of Bahamut were being made in a more modern context, it's likely that Twintania would be a mount that dropped from Savage difficulty raids.

IasEw9I.jpg

Satznswys meets up with Fray, and she seems to have a one-track mind. Axe beaks have been menacing people in the area.

Satznswys passes out, and the voice returns:

On a throne of bone she waits...
Serve...Save...Slave...Slay...
They come to entreat her judgment...
Serve...Save...Slave...Slay...
One by one, in solemn procession...

OrVMF9g.jpg

Hmm...

5wXwZ94.jpg
eUeaXnC.jpg

She says that Satznswys is no Dark Knight. A dark knight must accept that she cannot save everyone, and that sometimes is fortunate to only save themself. They must be prepared to renounce that which binds, find what matters, and forsake all that does not.

Continuing to gain levels, I end up grinding out a full set of tank armor from Stone Vigil, which shares the same models as Haurchefant's armor. Fitting, for sure!

UdbRR1X.jpg

Hitting level 45, Satznswys returns to Ishgard, and something is bugging Fray.

c9lEKiD.jpg

She says that Satznswys hasn't heard the voice since the previous communion, which means that Satznswys hasn't taken the lessons to heart.

rWb9hYD.jpg

Listen, Fray, this is starting to get a little strange, for real.

Pkpsz8D.jpg

Whoa. Fray dismisses Satznswys's concern.

KyhYG4R.jpg

Well, yeah, Satznswys's approach to problems has kinda always been to hit it head on...but how do you know that, Fray? She directs Satznswys to Moraby Drydocks.

0g9XEWV.jpg
hTuve1P.jpg

Y'know, neither did Satznswys. She says that her friend that she brought up before came to Moraby once. They did something foolish and were lucky to make it out alive. She says that she just had to get on that damn boat. Satznswys did something like that here as well. Back when she and the Scions were battling Leviathan...

Apparently the Jackets told the trader to pike off.

Q7q2Imo.jpg

The trader interrupts to praise Satznswys's deeds at killing primals. He begs her for help: a gang of Qiqirn bandits waylaid him down on the crystal flats near the drydocks.

NHTx83t.jpg

I mean, yeah, Fray. This does seem like a pretty lame busywork job when one's supposed to be training in a new job.

kh8OHRI.jpg

...why are you looking at Satznswys when you say that? She agrees to help.

Fray looks none too happy.

One sec, Alphinaud and Tataru. Power overwhelming is in my future!

Gotta look fancy, though. This top she's wearing is the Mythrite fending body, which you'll be using at level 50 if you don't have the poetics for Ironworks gear.
