Bumped into this NYT article today that the Kazakhstan Board of Tourism has leaned into the movie a bit and has commissioned a series of ads adopting Borat's "Very Nice" catchphrase.

I don't post this in defense of Cohen, it's just nice to know that Kazakhstan has been able to find some positivity from the movies.

My cousin's family had a Kazakh exchange student living with them one year, so I'd had exposure to someone from there and was able to see Cohen's portrayal as an exaggeration. As to the implication that anti-Semitism and misogyny are prevalent in Central Asia, it does reflect reality to some extent, thought not at the cartoonish levels portrayed in the films, obviously.

As for Bakalova, she's quite the protege for Cohen. She was lights out in this.

When watching the original Borat, I just assumed the antisemitism was all just a complete fabricated lie. Especially the outlandish parade sequence where the Jewish mascot lays an egg. But at least in Europe, that shit is actually way too real to be comfortable.
