It sounds like slightly stoned and saying “oh wow” repeatedly.

(Also guessing it’s been fed before given the way it’s hanging out expectantly around humans.)

I don't know if I have this from this thread, but I think I got it from Pinterest. Whatever, doesn't hurt to have it here two times.

So, source is unknown here, which I'm sorry for. But it always makes me smile, so I wanted to share.

This striking fella is Flaco, a Eurasian eagle-owl who used to live in the Central Park Zoo until someone vandalized his enclosure 12 days ago and he escaped. Now, however you may feel about zoos, up until this point Flaco had lived his entire life in captivity, so he didn't know how to hunt for his own food. He's stayed in the park so far, but he wasn't eating the food zoo staff was leaving for him and so they haven't been able to catch him again either.

But today, Flaco was spotted having caught and eaten his own prey, which means the zoo is able to ease their efforts to recapture him a little bit. For better or worse he's still going to be safer back in the zoo, because not only is there a ton of rodenticide in the city (his primary food source is rats), he could just as easily get hit by a car or fly into a window. But for the time being, it's nice to see that he's learning to fend for himself a bit. Long life to Flaco.

Important Flaco update: since he's been "very successful" in hunting and fending for himself so far, the Central Park Zoo is putting its efforts to recapture him on hold. They're going to keep monitoring him, and if he starts showing signs of difficulty or distress they'll try to bring him in again, but for now he's a free owl.

I guess there's no chance of his introducing young to create an invasive species or anything, so if he's just out there living his best life...I suppose that's A-OK? They're the experts, after all.

You go, Flaco!

Eurasian eagle owls are closely related to great horned owls, and there are certainly plenty of those in NYC. I wonder if the two species can produce viable offspring.

Apparently Flaco got into some kind of altercation with a great horned owl! But to the best of my knowledge, it was the owl equivalent of "You talkin' to me? Bro, you say somethin'?" and both parties walked away with little more than ruffled feathers.

Another fun fact about kestrels and other falcons is that they're not raptors (related to hawks, eagles, etc). They're actually most closely related to parrots. Fast little murderparrots.
