Three times in the past two weeks, we've seen a Cooper's hawk behind our house! I saw it by myself about two weeks ago while getting ready for work, then last Sunday my girlfriend and I spotted it while having breakfast. The day after that she texted while I was at work to say she saw it on our fire escape, but accidentally scared it away when it noticed her looking at it through the window from a couple of feet away.

We haven't seen it again since, but we're hoping that she didn't scare it off for good. It was really cool to see a bird like that from my kitchen, let alone more than once.

That’s so cool, linc! You should probably let Cooper know that you found his hawk.
"Diane, still no word about my missing hawk. I have no idea where this search will lead us, but I have a feeling it's a place both wonderful and strange."

We get the occasional junco in our yard! They are a rare treat. My girlfriend got way into birds at Christmas and we now have about 5 feeders going, which attracts a pretty big crowd of local birds. We were initially overloaded with sparrows, but she built some sort of hanging tentacle thing that looms over the main feeder and that keeps their numbers down. Now we mostly get house finches (like a sparrow, but smaller and with some red coloring), cardinals, chickadees, starlings and the occasionaly woodpecker, junco or nuthatch. It's been really nice to have abundant birds to look at, especially when I work from home. They definitely appreciate the offering, it has been extremely cold here lately and business is equally brisk.

We get plenty of Juncos here in the winter, though the clear out by spring.

Our current feeder lineup: junco, carolina chickadee, white-throated sparrow, carolina wren, bluebird, titmouse, cardinal, hermit thrush, yellow-rumped warbler, pine warbler, ruby-crowned kinglet, white-breasted nuthatch, downy woodpecker, red-breasted woodpecker, yellow-bellied sapsucker, goldfinch, mockingbird, mourning dove. I think that's all the current regulars.

We do also get house finches here but I haven't seen them recently, same for the occasional blue jay and towhee. Cedar waxwings come through very briefly. And the non-feeder neighborhood birds: robin, crow, red-shouldered hawk, black vulture, turkey vulture, great blue heron, barred owl. Oh and killdeer show up at the retention ponds sometimes. Used to be a nesting pair of northern flicker near me but I haven't seen them in years.

This sounds pretty fantastic, I'm jealous.

Those pigeons are lucky they didn't become lunch!

I mean, those photos are from 2023, so maybe they ultimately did. Unknown/unknowable.

That middle photo is amazing. Like the pigeon is doing an intentional slapstick comedy routine.

I prefer to ignore the timestamps and read the pictures as happening directly after each other, like a comic.
