A little under a year ago, I randomly decided to listen to every single Cypress Hill album in order, and post about it on Bsky.

And then I did that for Rancid.
Then Redman.
Then Bomb the Music Industry.
Then Kendrick Lamar.
And so on and so on until I'd done it 135 times as of this writing. It's now the majority of my social media presence and I get randos asking me to please check out their favorite artists and the works. So I figured 'd post about it here why not.

I don't think listening to hundreds and hundreds of albums has imparted in me any great critical skill. When I post my thoughts in tiny bite sized pieces I'm hardly writing a "review" and I lack the basic musical knowledge and vocabulary to accurately describe most songs. But I think it's done wonders for me in terms of music appreciation. Listening to every LP from some band you've never heard of in a genre you don't pay attention to can be truly eye-opening sometimes.

So yeah big stupid posts summarizing my thoughts on a shitload of bands incoming. If you want me to add something to THE LIST just ask.
 
1.CYPRESS HILL
I think the thing that surprised me in this listen was just how hard these guys leaned into the rock sounds after Rock superstar blew up. It makes sense and I don't think it was a calculated attempt at trend chasing or anything like that, just learning the wrong lessons from a big hit. Rock superstar didn't blow up because of it had guitar chords. It blew up because it FUCKING RULES.

2. RANCID
Man, fuck you if you don't like Rancid. of the big-name punk bands that blew up in the 90s they're still my personal number one. I've listened to the black album a hundred times and I likely will a hundred more.

3. REDMAN
Red is by far my favorite rapper. Dude has just such incredible presence on any song he's on, and he's just fucking hilarious to boot. I think my big takeaway from listening to his whole discog was just how much he really had evolved from his earlier stuff. There was a period of time where he didn't really know what he wanted to do yet, short as it was.

4. BOMB THE MUSIC INDUSTRY
So in these first few threads I'm basically just grabbing my all time favorites, and there aren't many bands I love more than BTMI. Their songs have such an incredible sense of momentum, building and building into a glorious explosion of sound. And then they were gone and there was nothing ever quite like them ever again.

5. KENDRICK LAMAR
Unlike the prior 4 artists which I'd loved for years, I really only got into Kendrick after witnessing the public execution of Drake in 2024. You should already know this, but I'm pleased to report that Not like us is very much NOT a fluke. The man is a generational talent when it comes to writing and has made some of the most insightful songs I've ever heard. And also some of the biggest bangers. His reputation is absolutely earned.

6. SYSTEM OF A DOWN
God damn system of a down is so fucking cool. Perfectly of their moment in time, utterly unafraid to call it like they see it, and 99% of their songs remain depressingly relevant today. One might think that jumping back to the early 00s in CURRENT ERA would be unbearably cringe, but no. Their stuff was basically flawless and remains as such.

7. ARMY OF THE PHARAOHS
So bluntly stated, you should probably NOT listen to AOTP. To call them a "problematic fave" would be a grave understatement. My deep affection of them is based entirely on how fucking weird their whole thing is. It's almost impossible to tell how much any given member understands how foolish everything about this is. The only one I'm 100% sure is fucking around is Celph Titled, because most of his verses seem to be about D&D Campaigns.

8. THE OFFSPRING
God DAMN I love The Offspring. They were my first favorite band ever in high school and they remain one of my all time favorites a quarter century later. As one of the super old bands on my list that's still touring and putting out new albums in current day, you can really tell how they've changed over the many MANY years, but I don't think they ever became unrecognizable. Yeah sure some of their later albums suck. Every greatest band ever has to have made at least one of the worst songs you've ever heard.

9. A TRIBE CALLED QUEST
A Tribe called quest is one of those groups I wasn't very familiar with before their thread. My tastes in rap tends more towards dudes screaming about how they like doing crimes, but I was very glad for the opportunity to expand my horizons a little bit. They're very relaxing as far as hip hop goes. Wonderful for putting yourself into a flow state.

10. TITUS ANDRONICUS
Manic depression: the band. Titus Andronicus is one of those groups I'm always a little hesitant to recommend to people because it's not exactly plesant listening. There is a darkness and anger informed by very real problems both inside and outside singer and writer Patrick Stickles. I love it, but I understand if anyone would rather listen to anything else.

Really enjoying this by the way. Lots of artists where I've only held onto a few mp3s from decades ago and haven't really bothered to expand my knowledge of them. A good reminder that there's so much more out there.
 
11. DEATH GRIPS
So at this point in the project it hadn't yet occurred to me to include notable EPs and mixtapes, which means my Death Grips knowledge is still missing several essential entries. I promise I'll go back and fix that eventually.
As for what I did hear, I think I appreciate the IDEA of death grips more than the reality of death grips. They have some undeniable bangers, and there's obvious artistic merit to what they're doing, but some of their stuff is so out there I hesitate to call them "songs".

12. CHEWIE (F.K.A. CHEWING ON TINFOIL)
A Quote Unquote Records legend, and a really good example of a Ska band without a horn section! But what I really love about them is their incredibly singable lyrics delivered with such pure earnestly that honestly kind of gets to me.

13. IMA ROBOT
I became a fan of these guys when I saw them open for a free show at my college back when I was 19. They put out a handful of very cool albums and then faded away as most good things do. So Imagine my surprise when 3 days after I finished their thread a whole new album appeared! It was like fate had guided weird british electrionica Pop punk back to me.

14. LAURA STEVENSON
Another incredible artist I learned about through Quote Unquote back in the day. Laura Stevenson's songs all capture such incredible emotion, to the point where some of them actually hurt to listen to. She has a way of making incredibly powerful music about incredibly specific things. And then she'll just make some goofy songs for fun. Very similar to Jeff Rosenstock in that way.

15. D12
It can't all be deeply emotional indie rock! For those of you who somehow spent that whole decade under a rock D12 is a detroit rap group that predated Eminem Blowing up like the sun and got taken along for the ride. And, man if I don't love a good posse track. They technically still exist, and have released a bunch of mixtapes, but I only covered up until the death of Proof. Kinda felt wrong to keep going past that.

16. CRAZY TOWN
I never said I was only going to listen to good bands. Crazy town has that one song you definitely remember, and a bunch of other songs that kinda suck. I was hoping that listening to them would make me uncover the hidden truth of them having some secret sauce, but no they started bad and ended bad. And then Shifty died in an overdose. Rest in peace.

Born to Raise Hell isn't good, but it's so weirdly sauceless for an "I'M SO BADASS" song that I'm kind of captivated by it.

17. BROKENCYDE
From a much-hated band I don't like to a much-hated band I fucking love. As I said in the thread, I think "Is Brokencyde good?" is asking the wrong question. There's something so wonderfully FREE about these fucking weirdos. "Crunk Core Screamo" may be something literally nobody has ever asked for, but they're doing it and I love them for it.

18. ANDY MINEO
As a lifelong Christian who loves music with cusses, my thread on Andy Mineo was less an examination on the quality of his raps and more an excuse to write a thread about what exactly "Christian music" means to me. Short version is I'm glad it exists, but the ecosystem built around it kinda super sucks! It would be nice if it sucked less.

19. ANDREW W.K.
Andrew W.K. is completely singular. I have yet to hear another artist that sounds anything like Andrew W.K. Everything he makes feels thunderous and important but also deeply personal, which is an insane thing to say about a guy who mostly just makes songs about how cool it is to party. I think we could all learn important lessons from Andrew W.K.

20. BILLY TALENT
One of the first bands in these threads That I'd never even heard of before someone requested it. I think it would be reductive to describe them as "what if Canadians wanted to be Greenday," but I can't say that would be inaccurate. Still, there are worse things to want to be than Greenday, and the managed to go some pretty cool places from that point.

21. N.W.A.
My wife told me to listen to this foundational gangster rap group, because she's cool and awesome like that. I think even a dedicated hip-hop hater would admit that Straight Outta Compton is an undeniable classic, but I think the most interesting part of this listen was just how openly and obviously things fell apart once Cube Left. N*****4Life is a fascinating snapshot of a group in the seconds before it fully falls apart. It's more interesting as a historical artifact than it is pleasant to listen to.

22. NEON HORSE
Another recommendation from a Bsky mutual I'd never heard of before listening to it. Apparently they're one of those bands that only existed for a few precious moments because a couple musicians were in the same room at the same time. I enjoyed them a lot! No idea how to describe them! There's something to be said for diving into the deep end.

23. ZEBRAHEAD
If you're on talking time, there's a decent chance your awareness of guys starts and ends with Sonic the Hedgehog's worst game. That's a terrible way to learn about what is for my money the best attempt at "Pop-Punk Rap" I'm aware of. There's something about the weird goofy sorta kinda hip-hop flow combined with how they play the absolute fuck out of every song that pushes all my buttons. And they're still at in in 2026! God bless all 90s punk bands with the strength of will to continue in current era.

24. GOOD LUCK
So is anyone else familiar with the micro-trend of extremely nonthreatening folk punk? A very specific trend of groups from the late zeros who I always sort of thought of as really wanting to be AJJ, but super soft? No? Just me? Figures. Anyway these guys were pretty alright even though they definitely wanted to be AJJ but super soft.

25. ABECEDARIANS
Another request from a mutual. If I'm being completely honest I didn't really *get* this one. Post punk and I never got along well. It's not them, it's me. That sort of low-key music you're supposed to groove on always sort of left me feeling anxious and uncomfortable.

An Asian-American dance rock band with a somewhat offensive name that took them all the way to the supreme court. I'm not really much for this sort of synth-heavy slowed-down rock but I definitely warmed up to it by the end. I'm very glad this little project encourages me to give stuff like this a chance.

So obviously I'm a huge fan of Less than Jake. Obviously. That said their career took a few more turns than I was expecting. I don't know what was going on with them during In with the Out Crowd but I'm glad they got through it.

29. M.O.P.
Mash Out Posse always struck me as not as famous as they should be, given the absolutely earth-shattering impact of their biggest hit. I wouldn't call them a one hit wonder, which I tend to associate with bands that gave up the second it became apparent that they weren't ever gonna be that big again. And their Post megahit history is actually a lot of fun!
