Ahhh... shoot 'em ups. Or "shmups" as some people call them. Or "STGs" as other people call them. Or "space shooters" if you're nasty. If you've ever wanted to be a lone spaceship/fighterjet/shrinemaiden/girlthatturnsintoaspaceship capable of solving every problem via rapid ballistic means, this is the genre for you.
I'll admit that I've never been particularly good at playing shmups, but I have always loved their tradition of excellent soundtracks, and that's what we're here to celebrate!
Anyhow, the rules for this thread are simple:
- Nominate four songs from a "shoot 'em up" videogame!
- Post a link to a streamable version of the song (e.g. YouTube or Bandcamp or whatever)
- Arrangements/covers are allowed.
- Please make sure you don't accidentally link to a Siivagunner upload (if you do, I will assume it was on purpose).
- The rough deadline for nominations will be end of day, on Wednesday May 14th, with the goal of getting the Thunderforcedome up and running by Friday the 16th.
"BUT ARTEE!!! WHAT IS A SHUMP????"
Good question.
A shmup is what your heart tells you is a shmup.
If you have a weird edge case or a weird little game that defies traditional genre classifications, I will trust you on the matter.
But, for the sake of attempting to lay clear boundaries for the uninitiated, let's consult the fountain of all wisdom, Wikipedia, as a starting point:
List of shoot 'em up games - Wikipedia

- Fixed Shooters - Your Space Invaders and Galagas.
- Horizontal Shooters - Your Gradiuses (Gradii?) and R-Types.
- Vertical Shooters - Your Alestes and Dodonpachies.
- Diagonal Shooters - Your Zaxxons and Isolated Warriors.
- Shmup Minigames - Sure why not?
- "Rail Shooters" - Your Space Harriers, Afterburners, and (some?) Star Foxen

- First-Person Shooters - Games in the Battlezone-Doom-Quake-Overwatch lineage.
- Third-Person Shooters - Games in the MDK-Jet Force Gemini-Gears of War-Fortnite lineage.

- Multidirectional Shooters - Dear Wikipedia: What the heck is this subgenre?? I mean, sure, putting Thunder Force 1/Granada/Smash TV together I can understand, and bundling them up with Ikari Warriors/Pocky & Rocky is kinda weird, but what in the world is Sub-Terrania doing there?!? That's a Thrust clone!!! (which I guess may be fair game, but still your categories are weird wikipedia)
- Run n Gun Platformers - I dunno. Contra and Metal Slug kinda feel okay, due to their one-way rachet scrolling, but I feel like Mega Man is a bit too much of a platformer for my tastes (quietly begging you all to ignore megaman unless its for a shmup stage or whatever).
- Light-Gun Games - The Time Crisis and House of the Dead half of the "rail shooter" genre. I've never liked lumping these two kinds of games together under the same label, but I'll leave this up to the judgment of you, the nominator.
Anyhow, get nominating before a terrifying battleship appears. Hurry!
The deadline for nominations will be end of day, on Wednesday May 14th.
