They've made the postseason 13 times in the last 20 years.

Yeah, the cards haven't had a losing record since 2007, and they haven't won fewer than 70 games since 1995 (2020 excluded). Their not often great (although they did win 100 in 2015), but they are the prototypical "always trying to compete" team

the problem with always competing is that it's hard to tell if you're actually good, and you still have to be the beneficiary of what must be luck despite the regularity. When they won the series in 2011 they were 10 games back of the wild card to start september. in 2006 they had the worst record of any division winner as well as a worse record than the phillies, who missed out on the wildcard spot (cardinals were barely over 500 with 12 teams holding better records). Two years later they had a better record and were fourth in their own division. As a cardinals fan, i think it's cool and i will not apologize for my affinity with satan's works

I remember being very resentful of that 2006 Cardinals team, because the Blue Jays were 87-75 and missed the playoffs.

Huh, yeah, okay I looked up the Cards records and they've actually been much more consistently good in this century than my childhood, though it looks like they did have a bad period in the 90s. The stuff I'm remembering from when I was a kid was winning the WS in 82 and losing it in 85 and 87, but they didn't even make playoffs the years in between. I don't really follow baseball regularly so I"m not surprised my memory is playing tricks.

They've been successful enough that they might be behind only the Yankees on the list of teams other fans are sick of seeing win.

It's hilarious/pathetic that the Dodgers and Giants will likely finish with the two best records in Baseball this season, and one will have to go to the single elimination play-in game. Baseball's playoffs are wiggity whack

I remember being very resentful of that 2006 Cardinals team, because it was the closest the Tigers have gotten to a championship since 1984, and after dropping Game 1 of the ALDS, they had rattled off 7 straight wins to reach the World Series. Then you blinked and it was over.

I feel like the Dodgers/Giants situation is partly the fault of the playoff structure (i.e. the Wild Card game, which I generally enjoy, but is unfortunate in this situation), but more the fault of the divisional structure. I think this year has pushed me over to the side of "MLB should go back to 2 divisions per league."

After all this I'm going to be disappointed if there isn't at least one tiebreaker game tomorrow. I would also like the Yankees to not have to play one, though.

Also, either the Dodgers or Giants are going to be the best Wild Card team of all time.

God, what a fucking intense day of baseball. Absolutely heartbreaking. Gonna sit here thinking about every close Blue Jays loss for the next week.

This is the first time in the Wild Card Game era that two 90 win teams have missed the playoffs. They'll both be back next year, though.

Also only the second time in the divisional era that four teams in a single division have won at least 90 games

20 fucking years.
It was a good season, but it is frustrating watching them get so close so often and then other teams just happen to have better records always.

Also Dipoto managed to push out one of my favorite ever Mariners this year for dumb reasons.

Having grown up as a Cleveland fan, I feel your pain. (Also having moved to Seattle I guess but I've only been to a couple games and haven't followed outside that)

HERE WE GO, BREWERS!

Also, wild that Corbin Burnes is the first pitcher from the Crew to win the league ERA title.

I'm fine with whoever wins it all this year except for Houston and Boston. Houston because cheating, but also because they've been a pain in the M's ass from the moment they entered the AL. Boston because, while I liked them for a brief minute in the late Aughts because of Papelbon, their fans ruined any good feeling for the team. Boston fans are the worst in the country, regardless of sport, and I'm just waiting for the Revolution to win it all this year so that they can tout championships in all five major sports in two decades while also begging for pity now that the Patriots suck.

I was going to say I was rooting for Brewers and . . ., but I didn't see an AL team I wanted to see win. I guess the Rays? They cry poverty to a ridiculous degree that annoys me, but they are actually kind of fun.

I guess I'm rooting for the NL this year.

Arozerena adds a lot to the Rays' fun factor. A straight steal of home is the most exciting play in baseball.

Alienated almost every baseball fan I live in close proximity to by supporting the Dodgers over the Giants.

That's okay. I'm not really a huge sports guy. It mostly just fun to watch people here in NorCal sputter when you don't automatically love the Giants (this also goes for not loving the 49ers.)
