The Blue Jays are coming back to Toronto on July 30th! I feel a bit conflicted about it - Ontario's vaccination rates are high, and the vaccination rates among MLB players and staff are higher than the general population, but it still's a bunch of people traveling from myriad locations, so it's still increasing risk. But I'd be lying if I said it wouldn't be nice to see my team play in a major league ballpark in front of their own fans again. At the very least, it means we won't have any more home games postponed by rain.

NEW NAME ALERT:

it's not bad. Having that little bit of hometown connection is always neat. Spiders would be endlessly better, but I also understand why they wouldn't go to that path. Logo is fine too.

edit: my favorite thing about new logos is how everyone unanimously hates it and replies with 4 other options that are 1000 times worse

Yeah, it's a bit generic, but fine - and the local reference is good. And basically it passes the "not a racist caricature" test, so it's an infinite improvement. I like the logo.

trade deadline nearing, lots of moves being made:

I particularly like
Marlins outfielder Starling Marte has been traded to the A’s for left-handed pitcher Jesús Luzardo.
Marlins get high upside and relatively high floor (he was bad this year, but even his bad was just average in terms of stuff and command numbers) and A's get a good rental for the lineup. The big gulf between them and houston is the offense, this narrows the gap.

Really interested to see what the Blue Jays do - their still in contention for a wild card spot, but it's slipping away fast. But their weaknesses are clear, and there are options for them to improve this year and next. I'm hoping for Craig Kimbrel, Richard Rodriguez, or Joey Gallo.

The Royals recently had their annual trade deadline signs of life, so I am sure they will not pull the trigger on any trades that might actually improve the team next year.

looks like Scherzer is going to San Diego. Already a dynamite rotation, even with Snell and Lamet underperforming, but now if they get past the wild card game (or just outright win the division), they're going to be scary. I'm posting as of "sources are saying" so we'll see the return for washington, but I'm gonna guess they get a fairly good haul for a half-year rental.

they did just get Hand. Great buy-low candidate really.

Yeah, but the Yankees got Gallo and Rizzo, so the Jays are still gonna need to make a bigger move to have a chance.

Just kidding! Dodgers!

And the Royals pulled the trigger on trading a guy who said he wanted to die a Royal. They had to foot his salary for the rest of the year, but at least they got back . . . player to be named later. I know I would be complaining if the Royals didn't make any trades, but this feels a little like making a trade to make a trade.

There was a time I thought Duffy was going to be the long-term #2 starter for an exciting young Royals rotation, but then we lost Yordano and everything kind of fell apart.

somehow the cardinals have declared themselves sellers by buying two below replacement level starters on a rental. About the only value Lester and Happ have are they will eat meaningless innings while the cards clean up their bevy of 4A(maybe not even that) players. What a strange deadline

What a wacky and wild trade deadline

Yeah, this is the busiest deadline I can remember in ages.

Blue Jays got Berrios. Excited about the deal, but giving up 2 top-100 prospects is a steep price. Still, they get an extra year of control, so it's not just a "win-now" move, and maybe they've got a chance to re-sign him. And apparently Austin Martin's prospect stock has dropped a little bit in the last few months, so that reduces the buyers remorse a bit.

Would have liked for them to make 1 more significant deal though - if you're gonna push in, you gotta really go for it. But who knows, it looks like more news is trickling in, so there might still have been another trade.

the one thing about the berrios deal, is that in light of moves like madrigal+ for kimbrel, or what the dodgers had to spend for a .5 of max and a 1.5 of turner, it looks like market value. They were probably only ever going to go on controllable pitching as well, so this was pretty much the only option (or at least it was easily the best).

they should be extremely good next year even if this one ends early

karzac

(he/him)
Yeah, after several years of teams being completely unwilling to part with top prospects, there sure was a whole lot of movement hear. I actually think the Berrios deal makes Washington's return for Sherzer and Turner look a bit light, but you're right that it's comparable.

And yeah, if the Jays re-sign Ray, that's a starting rotation of Berrios, Ryu, Ray, Manoah, Pearson (if he's healthy). Which is quite good.

Very happy to see the front office show that their willing to make a push, and in time for the home opener too!

The Cubs, Pirates, and Nationals have basically given up. I honestly cannot believe the fire sale on Chicago's north side.

Just five years ago, we were talking about how the Cubs seemed like an unstoppable dynasty. Guess if you want to keep a dynasty, you have to be willing to pay for it.

Triple post to say that the Blue Jays have been incredibly fun lately. They're on a 15-2 run, scoring a billion runs a game, with good starting pitching and the rest of the Wild Card contenders treading water. Vlad Jr is poised to end up with the record for home runs for a player 22 or younger and might win the triple crown. Marcus Semien might end up with the most home runs ever for a second baseman. Lourdes Gurriel Jr seems to hit a grand slam every other day. Robbie Ray has very tight pants! It's been great.

In all honesty it would be more fun to watch them in the playoffs than the Yankees struggle to get runs across

Dang, childhood flashbacks. (I grew up in STL during a time when they were actually quite good.)

The Astros are going to win the division handily again, and watching their success no matter what is a reminder that Rob Manfred was probably more upset about the cheating being exposed than he was about the actual cheating.

He probably pours water on his steaks.
