August 2026 New Games Thread

Violentvixen

(She/Her)
The basic idea is to list new games that you are interested in, as well as games you are potentially curious about or want to give wider attention to. You can briefly describe them or ask other people to help fill you in. The hope is that regular threads like these can act as a collective filter/discovery mechanism to help people decide what is worth checking out.

"New games" means any new title that is being released or ported this month in any capacity (not "backlogs/what you are playing this month"). The angle here is sharing your anticipation and promoting game discovery (as opposed to sharing comments about a first playthrough in progress - that belongs elsewhere).
  • If you want a handy list that covers most of the major upcoming games of the month, here are lists of upcoming games:
Here are the subscription service lists for this month:

Gamepass
  • Beast of Reincarnation - Aug 4th
  • Heretic & Hexen - Aug 4th
  • Monsters Are Coming! - Aug 6th
  • Sandustry -Aug 6th
  • Grave Seasons - Aug 14th
  • Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy -Aug 27th
PS+
  • Dying Light 2 Stay Human: Reloaded Edition | PS5, PS4
  • Big Walk | PS5
  • Signalis | PS4
Feel free to post other lists or list videos that you find useful.
If there is already a thread on TT about a game, please add a link to it.

Final request: If you are the first person to mention a game please provide (at minimum) a short sentence description. (If it is a very big AAA release though, then don't worry about it.) This is a good convention that makes the thread more useful as a discovery mechanism, and especially helps out anyone who doesn't follow the news as closely as you.

Currently only planning to pick up Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls. The beta was fun! It's Arc System Works' take on a Marvel tag team fighter with some great roster choices. Look at this villain team!

I am extremely curious about Big Walk on August 4th, a collaborative, goofy looking exploration game made by the studio that did Untitled Goose Game. I need to coordinate with my spouse about if we're getting it and what platform we're getting it on (I have done zero research about cross play or if everyone needs their own copy).

Mario Sunshine will be coming to Nintendo Switch 2 on the 13th if you have the Online subscription and the expansion pack. My roommate in college had this and I'd watch her play and randomly got the controller a few times, but never had my own save. Curious to see more people play this weird one, might pick it up myself just to play the opening of the game which I never played myself.

So overall not a big month for me, which is fine.

I had determined that Fields of Mistria would be my entry point into the cozy farm-'em-up genre, and that's said to be leaving Early Access on August 5. I prefer not to play story-heavy games before they're done writing them, so I've been waiting, but those who lack such compunctions have praised it highly. It's got plantable crops, upgradable housing, and smoochable neighbors. What else could you ask for?

From August 4, I'm curious to see what people have to say about Beast of Reincarnation, a parry-'em-up action game about a swordswoman and her dog wearing a cool hat and fighting monsters. I'm not feeling especially drawn to it, but the fact that it's developed by Game Freak with no involvement with Nintendo means I at least want to keep an eye on it.

Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 2 drops on August 27, a smaller collection of less-classic sneak-'em-ups compared to Vol. 1, including Guns of the Patriots, Peace Walker, and Ghost Babel. I played Peace Walker HD until there was no peace left to walk, including co-opping through the excessive number of high-end vehicle battles, and I'd do it again. I am doubtful about the condition of my PS3, and these are games that I may want to replay at a moment's notice.

I just watched a trailer for faux-retro indie action game Future Knight, whose publisher describes it as a shoot-'em-up, but I should clarify they mean like Contra, not like Gradius. But wait: the faux-retro graphics are like an LCD game! Due out August 13.

I'm keeping an eye on Brigandine: Abyss. It's a turn-based strategy RPG, but also has a game of Risk on top of it.

Preview is here:

Switch is getting towing open world RPGs, the both have the word “Elder” in their name and I want them both

One is Elder Scrolls Oblivion Remastered and the other is Elden Ring Tarnished Edition

And they’re TES and Elden Ring respectively so I feel as though they speak for themselves

I saw this on the Gamepass list and wasn't familiar with it but I will give a download to a game with a dog wearing a cool hat. I'm awful at parrying so probably not getting anywhere with it, alas.

Nothing on the docket for August but I did download the Switch 2 Edition upgrade for Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (July 30th, so I'm counting it) and I'm fairly delighted with it thus far. So I'll be lazily replaying XBC2 in glorious 4K/60, as I prepare my bank account for the September onslaught.

I love this concept, but I will admit I was a little disappointed to see that the graphics are too well-animated for the LCD style. Why do it if you're not gonna commit, you know? The music in the first trailer on its Steam page is pretty sweet, though, and it does look fun. Seems like this is coming to (at the very least) Switch and PSN as well, so I'll have to keep an eye out for it.

Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol 2 for me. Can't wait to revisit MGS4; which is the first MGS game I played and among my favorites in the series!

I'm going to say Corsair Cove? It was released on July 31st. It's a vertical city builder with a pirate theme by the folks who did Tropico 6.

Elden Ring isn't "Elder"! It doesn't mean that either!!!

Cotton Rock with You: Oriental Night Dreams is out now, having had a vague release window leading up to it. Out of all the Success STG properties, Cotton's modern revival has been consistently slamming, so I'm excited by more high-tension tomfoolery in the variety pack format that Rock 'n' Roll exhibited.
