August 2025 New Games Thread

Violentvixen

(She/Her)
The basic idea is to list new games that you are interested in, as well as games you are potentially curious about or want to give wider attention to. You can briefly describe them or ask other people to help fill you in. The hope is that regular threads like these can act as a collective filter/discovery mechanism to help people decide what is worth checking out.

"New games" means any new title that is being released or ported this month in any capacity (not "backlogs/what you are playing this month"). The angle here is sharing your anticipation and promoting game discovery (as opposed to sharing comments about a first playthrough in progress - that belongs elsewhere).

Here are the subscription service lists for this month:

Gamepass
  • Farming Simulator 25 Aug 1
  • Rain World Aug 5
  • Assassin's Creed Mirage Aug 7
  • Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 Enhanced Aug 12
  • Herdling Aug 21
  • Gears of War: Reloaded Aug 26
PS+
  • Lies of P | PS5, PS4
  • Day Z | PS4
  • My Hero One’s Justice 2 | PS4
Feel free to post other lists or list videos that you find useful.
If there is already a thread on TT about a game, please add a link to it.

Final request: If you are the first person to mention a game please provide (at minimum) a short sentence description. (If it is a very big AAA release though, then don't worry about it.) This is a good convention that makes the thread more useful as a discovery mechanism, and especially helps out anyone who doesn't follow the news as closely as you.

I'll be picking up Tiny Bookshelf, a game where you try to match books to customers. I really liked the demo I played a while ago on Steam and something cozy like that sounds great.

I also enjoyed the demo for the game Is This Seat Taken which had a tentative August release date but that still looks tentative so dunno.

Metal Gear Solid Delta is on the docket, especially since I never finished MGS3 back in the day. As good an excuse as any.

A quiet August otherwise, which is good considering September and October are stacked.

I want to play Metal Gear Solid Delta. I doubt I will be done with Death Stranding 2 by the time MGSD releases.

Lots of life stuff outside of video games occurring in August. Some pleasant and some not.

the new gradius collection comes out next week, featuring the brand-new salamander iii! and a bunch of settings toggles and stuff for the old games in the collection i guess, m2's always pretty good with that stuff so i'm excited

...that's all i got

Does July 31 count as August? Because indie stealth roguelike Spy Drops released today, but if I do buy it it won't be before tomorrow. Initial reviews seem kinda negative, but I'm curious enough to see if it's just a matter of critics' tastes not aligning with my own. "Metal Gear Solid 1 with procedurally generated missions" is the pitch.

Speaking of tactical espionage action, I'm interested in Metal Gear Solid Δ. I'm hoping that it includes backported mechanics or controls from the its sequels, since otherwise there'd be no reason not to just play any other rerelease of Snake Eater instead.

I've also got an eye on Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution, a revived and completed version of a game scrapped in 2004. It depends on what details emerge about WayForward's apparent partnership with ModRetro to rerelease a certain old licensed game. I'm hearing a lot of mixed reports about what the actual nature of that relationship is - about what exactly it means to "coordinate on the game's promotion" with a company run by Palmer Luckey - but depending on the answer I might be boycotting WayForward. It's precisely because they're a smaller company that such a question is on the table; it means it's not a moot point. But on the other hand, there'd be no point in continuing a boycott that has already had the desired effect.

I did everything there was to do in Kirby and the Forgotten Land and still wanted more, so I'll be grabbing its expansion, Star-Crossed World.

Is This Seat Taken? is a charming-looking puzz-'em-up that's scheduled for release on Steam this month. It's a constraint-solver type, in which you place little geometry people into chairs while fulfilling all of their individual preferences about their neighbors.

Artis Impact is something I've been looking forward to for a while. Nominally an RPG, but one whose systems may be secondary to the inimitable sense of confident flourish inherent in the presentation, from the framing of scenes, colour palettes used, and the sprite animation achieved. Not many preconceptions going into it, which is a good feeling to have.

Iwakura Aria is a visual novel by MAGES, a developer I don't usually follow because I actively dislike most of their output, but this is an original work instead of the franchised unmentionables they mostly do the rest of the time; the creatives involved aren't the usual studio roster either. Expect a secluded aristocratic mansion, conspiratorial intrigue, 1960s Japan, maids, lesbian romance and probably a hefty dose of tragedy wrapped in aestheticized violence. Box art enthusiasts might glean as much from the main promotional visual.

Wow, that is some wild presentation, I kind of love it. …. I guess I’ll hope it does real well and gets a Switch port, lol.

I need to finish DK Bananza first, but I'm excited for both Ragebound and Kirby and the Forgotten Land, particularly since I never got to play the latter and I need another game for this dang Switch 2.

I love me some Lies of P. Played through it three times now. If you get the "good" ending, there's a bit of an indicator on where they might take a sequel and I am stoked if they go that direction.

I haven't finished the DLC; need to jump back on that at some point.

All right, well, I'm satisfied that there's no more fire under that smoke. Based on the statement they released and subsequent lack of any other related skeletons emerging from adjacent closets, I think what most likely happened is they noted its existence to the minimum degree required by their existing contract with the license owner, and then prudently shut the fuck up about it. So I'll go ahead and play Shantae this month.

I am definitely going to be trying out Herdling which released on basically all platforms yesterday. Help move your fuzzy yak/sheep around! Probably some sort of mystery to solve!

I've also been curious about the game Rain World for a long time and that's out on Gamepass now too, so going to have to try that as well.

Both the original Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 are finally available on PlayStation Plus this month. Buy 'em for $9.99 each, or sub to PlayStation Plus Premium to play 'em, or already own them if you bought 'em as PSone Classics ages ago...There are options for classic survival horror times.

I read a very positive review of Herdling the other day, and I am also intrigued by it.
The controls are awkward, but I do acknowledge that they are accurate for how you'd heard sheep (line up behind the middle of the pack and they'll move away from you). Really enjoying it but also glad it's on Gamepass, looks like it's $20 on Switch and I feel like that's a bit much for what it is.

They've launched a playtest demo version of Militsioner, a game where you're trying to escape a town that is overseen by a gigantic cop. The latest trailer starts with a Franz Kafka quote and gives some indication of the gameplay: aside from staying out of sight or out of reach, you also need to behave in a way that defrays suspicion, both in the eyes of the cop and of the townspeople. I've had my eye on this baby for quite some time.
