FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFffffffffffffffffffdamn, after looking at the prices on those I think I'm gonna have to content myself with the slightly smaller two Mylene and one Basara figures I already have, but uggggh I want a sculpted Gubaba. 😳

Those figures are a fair bit cheaper if you import them off of an import site like aniami ($158.86+shipping vs $214.99) but it's still pricy either way. I just was mostly posting for the novelty of being able to buy official Macross merch domestically now, and also to look on with envy.

Interesting that they're jacked up so much, but $300-odd vs $400-odd for the pair isn't exactly enough to tip into sensible budget land.

(Especially when I need to save up for the $2200 SDF-1......)

Uhhhh, ok. I didn’t have “competing evil idol group” on my bingo card but sure let’s go.

3 weeks away from being released in Japanese theaters. I know it’s Big West’s intent to release it domestically in theaters as well. Maybe like a Fathom Events kind of deal. Hopefully that can happen sooner rather than later. And also that theaters are chill enough by then that I won’t hyperventilate while in my seat.

Edit: Two new trailers as well. One for Delta and one for Frontier:

I completely skipped Delta way back then. Is there still somewhere to watch, just for the sake of completion?

For now, as with back when it came out, the only place to watch it is to sail the Seven Seas. If you have dumb amounts of money to throw away, you could import the disks from Japan as they come with ENG subtitles, but that is a very expensive way to watch the show. Big West is eventually going to release this show, along with the rest domestically. But it'll probably take time for that to happen as they probably want to time/stagger releases to home video/streaming to maximize their money, as well as take time to figure out the logistics and contracts to get it done.

WHAT.

Well shit, now I'm gonna have to put more effort into actually getting a look at this when it's out.

(I have a sketch by Tenjin Hidetaka; I asked him to do Max's VF-1S. I at one point seriously considered doing up my white car in blue decals and getting a VF-1S MAX vanity plate, though I didn't actually follow through with it. So, yeah, gotta see what Max is up to, even in dubious-movie-canon-land.)

Fathom Events is screening Macross Plus: the Movie Edition on Tuesday, December 14th in select US theaters.

I might break my theater abstinence for this. And whatever you have to say about this film, this is pretty good news for the franchise as a whole. I've got no doubt this is only really possible thanks to the Harmony Gold settlement, and it bodes well for us getting more official/legal access to the franchise in the future.

Macross Δ Movie 2: Zettai Live!!! came out on BD a few days ago in Japan. The JP BDs come natively with ENG subs, so if you're impatient and don't want to wait for a domestic release, it's out there. But most assuredly I expect Macross videos and merchandise to start trickling out internationally sooner rather than later now that the rights have been hammered out with Harmony Gold. (Fuck Harmony Gold forever and always.)

Spoiler-Free impressions: I thought it was a decent film. Maybe one of the better Macross movies? Simply just from a coherency perspective, it's remarkable how much better Macross films are when they're designed from the ground up to be movies instead of condensing down dozens of hours of plot into a single theatrical release. It's novel that we're getting a somewhat meaningful direct sequel in a franchise that seems to abhor the idea. (The only real direct sequels we have in the franchise are what... Flashback 2012 and Dynamite 7? LOL) The movie does a good job of putting a capstone on Delta's characters and their personal stories, and is a good sequel in that respect. If you're looking for answers for the metatextual stuff that the Delta TV show touched upon but never explored, you're out of luck. Zettai Live!!! touches on those things again, but doesn't meaningfully progress them. In that respect, the film feels more like a bridge/teaser for a new Macross installment further down the line. And because of that, and several other factors, the movie feels less like an actual sequel and more like another compilation film - fitting in the world-building and character beats of the TV show that didn't fit into the first movie.

The action set pieces were bombastic and the film mostly looked pretty good, but all of it is kind of numbing at this point. (After the escalation of stakes and spectacle that the franchise has steadily delivered over the decades, the M.O. of the franchise is beginning to feel a little stale.) Most of the side characters aren't served very well when the focus of the movie is mainly on Hayate and Freyja, but that's how a film probably should be. Most of the open ended character threads from the TV show/1st movie got wrapped up in this however, even among the supporting cast, so that's nice. The little bits of lore added to the setting were fun (I still think the lore expansion that Delta did was the best thing the show had going for it) but frustratingly insufficient for my tastes. The handful of new worldbuilding in this film is the best thing the movie has going for it, but it's just spread a little too thin. The film's villain could have been pretty interesting, except that the movie doesn't allot him enough time for actually fleshing him out more than a basic elevator pitch. Which is too bad because his story could/should have stood as a thematic contrast to Hayate's father - who also gets some closure here. The film's ending was fairly predictable and thus a touch frustrating. I think the movie as a whole could have been better served as an at least 1-cour TV show so that it could have better explored some of its ideas and themes, and given its supporting cast more to do and contribute.

The music itself was kind of whatever. There weren't as many new songs as I would have guessed. And I wasn't a big fan of most of the new stuff, but then and again I wasn't exactly enamored with Walkure's music before. Junna's singing was incredible as always, but she plays second fiddle to Midori Suzuki in most of the songs, by the same nature as how her character plays second fiddle to Freyja in the plot as well. And following the fine tradition of Macross films, the best new song of the film was the one that played during the credits.

As a whole, Delta's second film was very much indicative of the series as a whole. Interesting ideas that never get fully explored, ok music that never lives up to the legacy of its predecessors, and another beat in a drum rhythm of a franchise stuck in a holding pattern and likely stagnating. Macross used to be my favorite thing in the world simply because you could rely on each and every entry to *feel* like something brand new. But Zettai Live!!! is more remix than anything else. But at least it isn't a bad time. Just go in with your expectations measured, and it'll entertain. Just don't but all your apples in one basket here.

Oh, also the Frontier short that comes coupled with the movie? A big, fat, wet nothing. It features Ranka and the rest of the Frontier family going on tour around the galaxy as a pretext for exploring Protoculture ruins in the hope they can find hints about where to find Alto. Spoilers: They don't find him.

Both the Protoculture signal that Ranka hopes is a beacon to find Alto, and the Megaroad-01 showing up briefly, only to get sucked back into a vortex were both cruel teases. Both *feel* like the setup for more Macross business in the future. And it better be. Because if not, my disappointment is very much palpable.

The villain being a disillusioned NUNS hero who is simply trying to free the galaxy of the NUN is very sympathetic and frustrating. Frustrating in that such a theme should have been better explored versus being a footnote in this film to justify whatever action shlock was happening on screen. Again, it felt like the idea of the character was to stand in direct contrast to Hayate's father - who gave up his life to liberate Windermere and protect it from NUN colonialism. Meanwhile, the villain claims to be doing the same thing, but sets fire to all the symbols of Windermere's cultural heritage and is ok with the whole planet ending up as collateral damage to his plan. All of that deserved a more thorough exploration.

Freyja's story ending the way it did was predictable, simply because the M.O. of the franchise feels stale at this point. I'd be more upset, it kind of felt like Delta wrote itself into a corner with her character and this was kind of the only way it could have ended without breaking with what is becoming franchise tradition.

The bad guy's nefarious plan being to create a Sharon Apple style AI copy of Walkure was pretty boring. The second I realized that was what was going on, was the second I knew exactly how this whole thing was going to end. It felt both good and bad to have the film both recognize Sharon Apple existed, while also just kind of rehashing that whole plotline. The film's contribution to the franchise's M.O. of exploring sci-fi dilemmas of real world technology extrapolated out into the future by showcasing machine learning in the world of art was another aspect of the film that deserved better exploration but didn't.

Oh. Also, for the 40th Anniversary of Macross, Bandai is putting out a High Grade YF-19 that I will buy despite not really having the money or time for it:

Which to me is a good portent of things to come. Gunpla has already gone international in a big way, and to me this signals the kinds of things Big West has in store for the international markets, regarding the kinds of goods they're looking to hock at us.

harmony gold has clarified (?) the macross international licensing situation, and it's still really stupid

What is going on with the #Macross sequels and the 2021 agreement to release them?
We are pleased to announce that the #Macross sequels from 1987 - 2021 have been cleared worldwide for release.
Certain #Macross sequels, such as Do You Remember Love, and any future sequel containing shared characters, mecha, and/or storyline, are currently prohibited. [...] Licensing opportunities for SDF: #Macross and the and the use of the 41 Macross characters outside of Japan will be handled by #Crunchyroll and Harmony Gold.

the most charitable read seems to be that they're going to release macross sequels, except DYRL and also maybe others they're not currently revealing, and also any future sequels that reference SDF macross will not get releases

they probably should have just made an inclusive list of what they are planning to release at this point, because "we're allowing the release of sequels between 1987-2021, except the ones we won't allow" isn't clarifying much, which leaves a really negative impression because as a result the only concrete information is that they still won't allow the release of DYRL or future projects with extremely broadly defined ties to SDF Macross ("characters, mecha, and/or storyline")

None of the information here is new. At best it's just a clarification - and not a very good one at that considering the misinterpretations I've seen on the internet. And it's one-sided as well, since it's just coming from Harmony Gold USA. It's more of a mission statement and also one final middle finger to Macross fans -- that even though things have been squared away, they're still going to be incredibly spiteful and petty about it all.

For clarification here, Harmony Gold USA will not be distributing any post-DYRL Macross content, but Big West will be. That's entirely out of HG's hands. What they are doing, is asserting that their deal makes it so that any future Macross sequels cannot include those things listed. Which goes a long way to explaining why the second Macross Delta movie walked back the Lady-M storyline and had the SDF-2 disappear back into a fold-rift despite the show and the second film highly teasing their return.

This isn't the worst thing in the world. It kind of forces the franchise to be forward facing and do new things instead of looking back. Which has been a personal sore-point considering the direction of the franchise in the last decade and a half. But it's still just... awful. Imagine a franchise like Star Trek - that's just as much about a shared universe/continuity - having to pretend the Original Series just didn't exist going forward for all sequels and they could never reference or discuss it ever again.

I hope whoever is navigating the corpse of HGUSA steps on legos every day for the rest of their miserable lives.

Y'all wanna see something painful?

There's a new Macross game coming out next year.

F4RPpWgbcAA7wVQ

And guess what -- because of the new franchise settlement, we'll actually be getting it internationally as well!

Except, because of the caveats that I outlined above, this is what we're getting:

I'm an atheist, but I sincerely hope I'm wrong because I want there to be a hell for everyone involved with Harmony Gold to burn there in misery and pain for all of eternity

ISTG, Harmony Gold.

Still, as the first real Macross game officially in English.. uh, maybe ever?.. I'm probably obligated to play it, lol.
