“I Just Think They're Neat.” Like What You are Playing

Mario 64 is better than I remembered it. Mario is a joy to control, it's full of bite sized (although not necessarily easy) challenges that make it simple to hop in and out for a quick session, and I honestly don't think any 3D Mario has a better hubworld than Bowser's Castle in 64.

I completely forgot about the entrance to the haunted house area! I was just killing some boos in the hub to mess around, and then suddenly I was in a new level! What a good hub!

Not many games period have better hubs.

I haven't played enough non-Mario 3D platformers to really compare, is the only reason I qualify it. (Also, whoops, obviously it's Bowser Occupied Peach Castle, not Bowser's Castle, but whatever.)

New release of OpenMW has an over the shoulder camera for an improved (for some, at least) 3rd person Morrowind experience (I'm sure other prefer the original camera).

Yeah. It's aged shockingly well. The only thing that shows its age is the camera control, and 90% of the time that's fine.

They don't always succeed, but I admire the audacity of the Caligula Effect games and their dedication to eating their cake and having it too. Most especially in using the "trapped in an MMO" (ish) premise as an excuse to feature a cast of pretty anime teens but making it so many of them are actually adults IRL. So you get protagonists who are, like, single parents, or unemployed and chronically depressed, or in most recently a friggin grandma on your team, kicking ass behinds.

So I'm enjoying Star Renegades. It's sort of a feature salad of a game. It's a deterministic RPG battler! And you push enemies down the fight timeline, like in Grandia and Octopath! And it's a roguelite! And a relationship sim! And it has a nemesis system, sort of! And

After the half-hour appetizer style of Hades the loops seem comparatively very slow, but I'm starting to get the hang of things and got some good loot this time through, so I'm doing better (I beat the first world the first time, then got killed in the second, and then kept getting stuck on the first again most of the time; this latest run I destroyed a battlecruiser and went to the moon on the first world, so found some useful stuff in those places). It gets tough though.

Also the little robot orb is named J5T-1N and every time I'm like "hey that's me!" because it reads a lot like "JSTIN"

Star Renegades is a GOAT.

Anyway, I played through There Is No Game on the weekend, and I really enjoyed it. It's a very unique experience. A nice svelte ~4-5 hour adventure game that immediately breaks the 4th wall and never stops and likes to hop between parodies of different gameplay genres. It goes to some interesting places that reminds me of some of The Witness' worst excesses, but what comes off as pretension there feels... adorably budget here. There's also a hint button if you ever get stuck, but I never had to click on it (although I came close a couple of times, and may well have needed it if my SO wasn't offering suggestions beside me).

After my first run I decided to mix in some of the new folks that were available, but that stock starting group is really really strong between the shield restore and AOE attack of the robo-zealot, and the stun shot the pistolero gets early on. I'm back to just using them and doing much better. Added the sharpshooter bot this time after beating the first Behemoth.

Inscryption is absolutely wild. It starts as a really cool creepy atmospheric card game. And then it goes ... places. So many places. At this point you could tell me anything about what the rest of this game is and I would believe you.

Was this on a podcast or something that came out today? You're the third person to mention this game to me today and now I'm wondering if something made it come up.

It was all over my Twitter feed a couple weeks ago. I haven't seen anything big about it in the last couple days. I've been playing for a bit over a week.

Yeah, I heard a lot about it a few weeks ago but am very amused that so many people decided to talk about it yesterday. Funny coincidence I guess!

Caligula Effect 2 literally says nonbinary rights, hell yeah. Also a rare (?) example of a transmasculine character?

Unrelatedly I personally find the battle system to be a ton of fun, it's like a looser and faster version of Star Renegades, or like a mashup of Chrono Trigger and Grandia. Plus despite most of the female characters all doing acrobatics in miniskirts it's like one of the least horny recent JRPGs I've encountered?

After fifteen years, I finally beat Aquafresh Kasumi in Dead or Alive 4. One of those demons I never managed to conquer from the Xbox 360 days has been vanquished at last! And I got... 10 gamerscore for it. Blah.

(Also... there's no apparent "easy" difficulty in DOA4, which annoys me. Come on, Tecmo, you know how cheap these games get!)

Instead of playing any game in my backlog that I haven't already beaten at least five times, I bought the Dark Souls remaster on sale and I'm playing Dark Souls again. Dark Souls is great!

I was already interested in Unpacking after playing the demo, but the actual game is even better and I'm very much enjoying it. I think I posted in the monthly threads that I thought it was overpriced but definitely reconsidering that.

Just nice subtlety to it. When you move in with your love interest and you can't take down his stuff to put your diploma up and have to shove it in the closet... yeah. Called right then this wasn't going to last.

So far Return of the Obra Dinn is pretty great, and far more accessible than Papers, Please (hopefully that remains true). The score is great, and the sound work is excellent, which is good since it has to carry a lot of the emotional weight of the game.

Now all you have to do is beat her a few dozen more times in escalating difficulty levels in order to unlock everything!

I played a couple rounds of the Halo Infinite beta, it's fun! Then I figured why the hell not try the tutorial. It surprisingly had an opening cutscene, that focused on someone being rescued by Spartans. I was already excited that it's focusing on the development of a black woman in a leadership role, but then it showed she's wearing a bee necklace.

I am freaking out that this could be an ilovebees reference, I'd heard SPDR was mentioned in other trailers but didn't think much of it and now I'm really, really excited because that is no question my favourite game tie-in of all time and a hell of a thing to bring back.

One of the biggest blessings of the last Xbox backward compatibility update has been Mini Ninjas. You could get away with calling it baby's first stealth action game, with lots of ways to conceal yourself but surprisingly little need to rely on most of them. However, it's kind of where I'm at right now. I want an action platformer that demands excellence from itself while not expecting much from the player, and Mini Ninjas definitely fits that description. There's just enough here to keep your fingers dancing and your mind engaged, without overwhelming you with too much challenge or too much depth. Whenever boredom starts to creep in, the designers introduce a new playable character or magic ability to broaden the action and keep you entertained. I just found a ninja archer (wearing hunter's camo!), and it's been oodles of fun picking off samurai from a distance and sniping large crowds of them with an explosive arrow that fills the impact zone with fireworks.

Aside from having to dispatch a boss with quicktime events, Mini Ninjas has been pure, relaxing enjoyment. Even the Japan-esque setting feels more authentic and respectful to the culture that inspired it than, say, Legend of Kay, which keeps getting released for modern consoles in the desperate hope that it will someday find an audience. It won't, but Mini Ninjas deserves one.

Out of all the Lucasarts adventure games I have played so far, Sam & Max Hit The Road is right up there with Day of the Tentacle for me as the best. I don’t know if I’ve subconsciously pysch profiled the developers at Lucasarts after playing through a number of their games over the past five years, but I am making very goodprogress. Maybe most of the puzzle solutions so far also serving as punchlines to jokes have made it easier for me. I do appreciate that Sam and Max themselves will offer a clue sometimes.

Townscaper is less a game and more a 3D city modeler for your D&D campaign, but it's surprisingly relaxing.
