I think he means if there's an auto-lock or aim assist to target enemies? I thought I saw that option in the controller preferences but am not sure right now.

Anyway, I Skyrim'd a Scorpion tank up a mountain and am very proud of myself. Can someone please mod Fus Ro Dah into Halo then my life will be complete.

I'm not sure what you mean because the crosshair should always be in the dead center of the screen.
Fair point. I guess I mean a standard or neutral position, like when you start. I'll aim up or down or wherever, and I'm not sure where "normal" center is supposed to be.

Violentvixen

(She/Her)
Oh like an auto-center reset in some open word or adventure games? Not an option here that I'm aware of, and if you're focused perfectly center at someone that usually means they're looking back at you and you're about to get shot too. The only time I can think of that I really get things centered on purpose is when I'm hidden with a sniper rifle and well-protected, or talking/interacting with something.

I hadn't realized until thinking about this how good the camera feels when hiking around. I have really not had any frustrations with it and hiking up a mountain in this game felt very natural. Going to pay more attention next time I play but when not in battle I think I've had the reticle just above the horizon when going uphill and just below when down? Can't really picture it.

Finished the campaign. Too much of the final set of missions is just going through same-y alien corridors but I really liked all the open world stuff.

I'll try the horizon line thing. I just have a tendency to look at the ground when I walk, and it seems to carry over here, too, somehow. And when I try to fix it, I feel like I'm overcompensating, or still too low.

...maybe this is part of why newer* FPS games have been harder for me to get to grips with.

* Like, newer than Doom or Jurassic Park on the SNES. Yes, that Doom. No, not the SNES version.

Oh man, Adjutant Resolution's second fight is my biggest roadblock so far. Bah.
Yea that's a tough one. Just always be moving, watch for the drones he calls in.

I beat this last week. Very good. In contrast to gears 5, the open world stuff is great, and the more straightforward stuff a bit of a snooze.

Thanks! I think a lot of it is that this is the first fight where I've had to quickly toggle between grappling (to dodge beams), location sensor (to see the Sentinels more accurately) and the Drop Wall as noted. I didn't really have those in muscle memory, I spent a few rounds just circling around the arena switching between them until I had a feel for it, and then he was honestly pretty easy. Also picking up a pulse carbine from one of the weapon racks helped a lot, my loadout upon walking into the fight was a shock rifle and a sentinel beam and trying to aim with those suuuuucked.

Also this Kotaku article made me feel better.

Beat it. I felt like the last few levels/bosses are all over the place in difficulty and quality. The creepiness of the setup for the Blademaster fight was great. But then he was dead very quickly and I was disappointed.

Also the Bandana Skull is a paaaaaaaiiiin but I got it!

I still stand by my initial assessment: The campaign is recommended if you're on Gamepass and get it for free, but I can't recommend paying (checks) $60 for it.

I fully loved it, but I am very firmly in the Pass ecosphere with the occasional actual purchases here and then (Rtype anyone?)

But then I got a Warthog and a Ghost and was thrilled and just started careening everywhere because the Warthog feels just as ludicrous as it used to.

Accept that it is bonkers. I love it. I felt so much joy the moment I started driving that thing.

Not as bonkers as the ME1 Mako but so much dang fun. Trying to sneak vehicles into places they clearly aren't supposed to go is the best.

I'm willing to give adapting to it a shot (seriously, though, get Playground Games to lend a hand), but is there a good place to practice?

Just drive around. You seem really worried about perfection and precision with this game and what you "should" be doing, I don't think you're going to be happy if that's your goal. And I'd be really depressed if the Warthog suddenly controlled like a Forza car, that sounds dreary.

Fast travel to a FOB, request a Warthog, load up some marines with cool weapons and run around until you see a pocket of Banished. Drive around them at enough of a distance that the marines can pick off some enemies with the guns without you being in danger. If there's a Brute with a Ravager park the car or drive on to another group, those are vehicle destroyers. You might hit a rock or a tree, if you do, get out and flip the car and get back in and continue looping around them or driving back and forth or whatever. Run over a few as you careen around if you can, that red X is satisying.

Another thing to consider: all vehicles are 100% optional. I think I had to fly to get to one or two high value targets? Don't stress too much. I don't think the vehicles control great either. On the plus side, you can drive one of these things off a mountain. It's fun!

Halo infinite: or how I learned to stop worrying and Love the warthog

Bonus points if it's spinning and marines are in it at the time.

I Skyrim'd a Scorpion up a mountain and was so dang proud of myself.

Having the doubled acceleration and explosion radius skulls on is amazing by they way. Haven't played since I unlocked Bandana but am very excited for infinite ammo and grenades with no weapon cooldown.

I don't know if I'd go that far, I'm just at the bottom and trying to get better.

And I love using the Warthog in Forza, it's how I'm used to driving it. Or just like any kind of driving game, really.

Anyway, I'll give it a shot, though my FOB (GOLF) is only letting me get a Mongoose at the moment.

I also had a Scorpion at Ransom Keep, but it disappeared after I left. How does summoning vehicles work with regards to what you can and can't get at a FOB? Does it just depend on the FOB?

Also, that reminds me... does every vehicle have a different control scheme? I noticed the Scorpion didn't move like the Mongoose or Warthog, with what would be steering on those only controlling the turret.

As long as I'm asking stuff: Is there a way to refill the S5 Sniper Rifle? Neither the kinetic nor plasma refill stations did anything for it.

Unlocked with valor. Whenever you rescue some Marines or smash a propoganda tower or do anything on the map really you get valor and the text on the screen talks about how it unlocks stuff at the FOB. This makes doing the sidequests even more rewarding! I just had a propaganda tower last night where a Grunt wanted to borrow someone's Xbox controller, amusing.

Yeah, aiming the turret is independent of the direction of the tank base. Would be a pain if you had to rearrange the tank to aim so it makes sense. I wouldn't say the controls are overall different but they reflect the different purposes of each vehicle.

The Ghost is probably still my favourite to control and I love the freedom of movement of not having wheels. I miss being able to do loops and rolls in Banshees like you could back in Halo 2 but oh well.

I think it's power, not kinetic. But you can refill that or request another rifle and use that to refill ammo at any FOB, I think it's one of your first unlocks? I forget but it shouldn't be long if you don't have it already.

Ah, okay, I might have missed that blurb. Nice to know.

(And that bit sounds funny. XD )

Ooh, can't wait to try it. =D

I think I used one in Spartan Assault.

Hm, I don't think I have that option yet. Sounds cool. Didn't know there were other weapon types, either (well, I know there's a sword, but...)

Also, I've been holding on to my Spartan Cores, waiting to see what I need enhancement in most before I end up using them, but it doesn't look like more stuff has opened up yet. Do I need to spend them for more things to become available for "purchase"? Or am I misunderstanding that whole system?

Driving vehicles in Halo is definitely squirrely but I also love it
In campaign it's fine. In multiplayer it's infuriating. You need your vehicles to be responsive and to do their jobs, and they can't do that when they flip over at the smallest pebble in your path. They are beyond dogshit.

There's still one more after that. If you want to get more practice with rare weapons I'd try multiplayer, specifically the Fiesta mode where everyone spawns with random ones.

You'll open up more as you do plot missions, but I think there's four or five things to upgrade with four levels each.

I would focus on the shield first then location sensor or the grappling hook. More shields are always useful, faster/more charges for the loc sensor is great and then there are a couple grappling upgrades that make it useful and fun in combat.

I'd say grappling is number one
1) cool down reduction
2) length of hook
3) can grapple into guys and punch them - very effective. And if you have grav hammer or energy sword, you can just insert yourself into centre of a group of enemies and lay waste

Oh yeah, and the shockwave melee thing after grappling is great too. I'm making some assumptions about LBD's playstyle, from his questions I dunno if the grappling upgrades would fit how he's approaching things.

I've been wary of multiplayer -- the last time I tried is part of why it's taken me almost 20 years to come around on even playing this. D=

Gotcha. I actually use it a lot in combat already.

This sounds incredibly appealing. I'll see if I've got that available yet.

Oh, absolutely. I was just musing about this on Twitter earlier:

I have a feeling grappling and shields would be very useful to me. Didn't know you couldn't hit them when grappling into them, I thought that's what I was doing already.

Incidentally, I just got my first sword earlier. I was using the trigger to swing it, and oh hey, it has an energy meter, too. Dang. I found out when trying to conserve energy that the melee attack seems to swing it, too. Do both use energy? Is one attack stronger? I didn't really get to find out.

Also, how do you recharge it? Well, besides getting another one at a FOB, that is? And is there a way to get the Sniper Rifles I've been grabbing to appear in the FOB boxes, too?

Oh! About vehicles! I commandeered my first Ghost earlier. The good news is, it feels a little more natural to me, somehow. The bad news is, I didn't get to spend as much time with it as I'd have liked, as a guy jumped on, tossed me off, and took it for himself. I should have tried grappling hooking back to it instead of destroying it, but either way, is there a way to shake them off? And is there a way to do to him what he did to me?

Edit: One other thing: I helped some troops out, and they were following me around briefly, all "Lead the way, Chief!" and "Wow, it's the Chief!" and such, but I didn't get too far before I turned around and they were gone. Do I do anything with these guys?

Side note: I'm having a blast learning and doing all this new stuff, so thanks for helping facilitate that! Haven't had this kind of feeling with a game in some time. =D

Sword and grav will recharge when enemies drop others. I thing sword takes energy ammo and grav considered power ammo.

The reality is, especially if you are far from FOB, is you have to switch weapons to what is available and adapt to the situation. Like you run out of ammo and pick up what's on a gun rack or what an enemy dropped. This sounds annoying, but I actually think it's a strength of the game.

Here are some useful weapons if you ask me:
Ravager: this lights the ground on fire. Useless in multiplayer, but devastating in campaign. You can fire from long ways away and clear out groups, or weaken boss type

Shock rifle: a few shots will stun a vehicle. This has affect itf crashing airborne vehicles. And very dece for stunning enemies

Battle rifle: shoots 3 round bursts, has a scope for dece range sniping. This is my go to weapon

Skewer: this is a one hit kill anywhere on body. It travels a bit slower than bullets. It can also one hit (mostly) any vehicle.

Cindershot: bouncy grenade launcher. Clears out clustered enemies

Another thing about grapple: you can grapple plasma coils to yourself so you can toss at enemies. And! You can grapple on to vehicles to highjack them. Including airborne!

Another other thing: high value targets have a unique weapon pick up nearby. These can be generated later at FOBs. And as you get more valour your other standard options become available too, so you can make power weapons to your heart's content
