The Series-ously SX-y Xbox Thread with the super not great name that I may need to workshop

Happy to see this, but sad this is the definitive last one.
I'm personally excited for GUNVALKYRIE and MK 9.

Re: MK9 - Same. Shame they aren't actually selling it for some reason, though, because that's kind of a problem for me. =(

And hey, my DOA games are playable again!

Sadly, no Burnout 3, Bionic Commando Rearmed, or Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing.

And my Avatar is still cursed in Sonic ASR Transformed.

Otogi, Gunvalkyrie and Dead or Alive have me feel like I'm missing out not having access to any kind of an Xbox, and that's saying a lot.

I'm quickly coming to the realization that the latest backward compatibility update doesn't do you a lot of good if you weren't in the Xbox ecosystem early. I was, but a lot of people weren't, and they can't take advantage of the games suddenly available for the Xbox One and Series, because they aren't actually available. If you want to play Mortal Kombat 9, I hope you had the foresight to buy it digitally for the 360 eight years ago, because you're sure not going to get it from Microsoft now. Sure, you can buy the disc, but you have to find the disc, have a console that can take the disc (the Series S can't), and hope that the game scalping collecting community hasn't inflated the price of the disc beyond your reach.

I was lucky. Not only was I an early-ish adopter of the Xbox brand, I bought a few of these backward compatible games on a lark early in the year. Not everyone is going to have the good fortune to own these games physically, and as such Microsoft should be expected to offer them digitally. What good is backward compatibility when the games can't even be purchased?

Now I've got to see if I can buy Otogi and GunValkyrie on the Xbox store. My guess is "no," which would be an amazingly stupid oversight on Microsoft's part. I don't think you could buy them digitally before, because no console beyond the classic Xbox could play them. Now that they ARE playable, we... kind of need a way to actually get them.

EDIT: They are showing up in the Xbox store... cue relief! GunValkyrie is $10 while the two Otogis are $20 each. Hard sell for that price. Timesplitters 2 and 3 are $10 each, which is about where they should be IMO.

looking at the prices, you may be better off looking at second hand places for some of these; Timesplitters 2 is $20 CAD, and both halves of Dead or Alive Ultimate are sold individually (granted, replaying the arcade port of DoA1 is… a hard sell)

Eh, give 'em some time. The Mass Effect games didn't immediately materialize on the digital storefronts when they had backwards compatibility added either but they did eventually.

Speaking of BC, I hooked up the ol' 360 just to see if some of these games were made available on that old shop as well, and they are. I'm impressed.

Yeah, some are available to purchase, others aren't. MK9 is the big mystery for me, particularly given how story-intensive the trilogy it kicked off was.

I've got the first three DOAs on disc (thought I had 4, guess not), and wishlisted the whole lot in case a good sale comes along, just for convenience's sake.

Why is it that MK9 never went digital? I’d assume it’s because of licensing issues with Freddie Krueger, but that didn’t stop digital sales for XL or Ultimate

MK9 went digital on PSN (I have it digital on PS3 and Vita) so it has to be a MS thing.

Maybe it went digital and was retired because it was trapped in the 360?

It may come down to Sony moved first to day and date digital releases on PS3 as an initiative around then and Xbox hadn't yet. And at this point I'm guessing to release digitally on Xbox it would need to be resubmitted to ratings boards, etc. and WB hasn't wanted to take it up.

Nevermind, looks like yeah it was available digitally before and got delisted. Probably partially due to character rights.

Dead or Alive games age like frickin' Rob Lowe, man. Watch DOA3 and then tell yourself that's twenty years old. You'll call you a liar.

Not sure if physical copies of the game exist anymore that don’t have the DLC integrated into it, as opposed to being a separate download

This thread looks the closest I could find on the topic and I don't see an answer, but one person is cautioning that the Komplete Edition physical would have had the Kombat Pass that was needed to play online. While it looks like some elements of matchmaking have been discontinued it looks like some people are having success with doing private matches.

I tried my own copy of the Komplete edition, and got a message saying the game isn’t playable on a Series X console, however this was shortly after the BC update was announced, so I may have jumped the gun on it

Keep me updated plzzzz
I love MK9 so will need to order a copy if need be!

So if this the end of BC program, I want to say how incredible it is, despite some notable ommissions (Bionic Commando 1, for instance, Charlie Murder [only i care, i know])

During my recent Castlevania thon, i replayed SOTN 360. That's awesome.

One thing that's weird is that there are two separate DLCs for Freddy Kreuger, one free and the other costing $4.99. Picking the free DLC does not unlock Freddy Kreuger. (I wasn't sure if I had bought the expansions for the game back in 2014 when I purchased it from the Xbox store. Apparently not!)

The free one sounds like the "compatibility pack". DLC for MK 9 wasn't on the disc originally and in order to play against people that had the DLC, non-owners had to install the free compatibility pack or they would get errors.

At the time it felt to me like when Street Fighter x Tekken came out about a year later and included the DLC on the disc they did it in order to prevent something similar from having to be done, but it looked bad on its own to have the characters on the disc and locking them behind an extra charge.

Heartbreaking here. They say it's for legal, licensing, and technical reasons they can't do any more... I can understand that for the Burger King games or OutRun 2 or even BurnOut 3, but... Bionic Commando Rearmed? What is it doing that BCR2 isn't?

And likewise with Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing. Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed has Danica Patrick and Wreck-It Ralph, while the first has... Banjo-Kazooie. Who owns Banjo again? Oh, right, it's Microsoft!

Sigh, I really need to get a new Xbox 360. After my last one red-ringed and backwards compatibility became a thing, I was really hoping I wouldn't need to, and just swallow the loss of a few games that didn't carry forward. Looks like that's no longer viable.

On a related note... can anyone help me with this? Please?

I think my save data is still in the cloud... at least, I hope it is. Otherwise, I'll have to find a way to upload it from my 360's hard drive again (I had to go out to a local game store's game room to do it last time... I don't even know if that's open now).

I finally got myself a Series X having missed the One entirely. Two days in, and I think I love it. Just on back compatibility alone, it's got an enormous library, so much fun to be had. And it's so well designed and smooth. I can't wait to play more with it.

Just what came with it. Microsoft really knocked this one out of the park, even the industrial design is remarkable. It feels really well made, and manages to look imposing and unobtrusive at the same time.

It's a real shame stuff like Dishonored, Jet Set Radio Future and Project Gotham Racing aren't back compatible, but the fact I can get a game from 2002 and play it in really high res and smooth frame rate is incredible. All the fun of a PC, without having to put up with a PC.

I hear ya. I was able to replay Panzer Dragoon Orta and Republic Commando. Outstanding!

Excited to try gunvalkyrie over holiday
