I beat Kaizo 1 any%! That dastardly third lava dolphin went down, and invisible Bowser got beaten like a chump on my second try.

I...don't know how much more of the game I'll do, to be honest. I wanted to do the Special World, but everyone keeps begging me not to put myself through that.

...maybe as a sub incentive.

Amazing job, Snake! You took that hack down super fast. You could always take a look at the first Special level and see how bad it is, and go play something else if it actually is That Bad.

I put another hour into New Comfy and cleared another four exits. Not quite the 10-minutes-per-level pace I achieved yesterday, but it's still pretty good! The hack continues to be really fun. Some sweet fusion-y jams in the soundtrack, too. Tomorrow's my last day before the big move, so between work and packing the last of my stuff I may not get to play more for a couple of days. Somehow I've only got eight exits left! Hopefully I'll be able to get back to it by the weekend.

I took the chance to play Soup or Solstng World today on stream, and it was a delight. I kinda got stuck on the motor skills level for a bit, but that was a nice beginner hack that I beat in one sitting. It was also fun to have shovda and BeeKaay in chat commenting.

Tomorrow, I'm going to start Super Nothing World by NewPointless. Should be interesting.

Settle in, Mike, you're in for an experience. And it's going to feel amazing when you come out the other side.

Also congrats on beating Sen's! How did the Chuck boss treat you?

Congrats! Now you're really in for some shit. (Get it?)

I played and beat Super Nothing World today, and it was very good! It's a fusion of standard and kaizo levels, and it's pretty creative in its setups. Not to mention the later levels have some bite to them. Recommend!

Also, related, and Mike already knows this, but I made Affiliate on Twitch! So expect more streams I guess.

Hey that's amazing, congrats! And you just got started, too. Once I get my computer set up again expect to see a lot more of me in your streams.

Not to brag, you're looking at his first-ever subscriber.

ClusterChuck didn't go too badly, all things considered. It took me about 40 minutes to beat him, and I actually had two runs prior to that where I got him into countdown mode but died before he exploded. On my final attempt, I managed to get up to the safe spot by bouncing off a football that was still kicking around the room. Overall, the level was less scary than I thought it would be, as was the boss fight. The hardest part of Sen's for me was the second section, mostly because it's pretty long. I was quite happy to get the door on my first try!

I also spent about half an hour working on Deuce Lair secret exit, but it was getting late, so I stopped before finishing it. Made some pretty solid progress, at least. My plan is to do the secret and regular exits back-to-back, that way I can go do Laughter House if I need a break from the grind. The real Dark Souls starts here!

I gotta get my desk and computer set up so that I can get my own sub in.

Laughter House is definitely easier than Deuce Lair, so I think you're on a good plan.

You guys

I think the next hack I'm going to stream is Mad With Kaizo Power, given how much fun I had with Super Nothing World. So look forward to that.

I will look forward to it! Mad with Kaizo Power is a great hack and I think you'll dig it, especially as you have more patience than me.

I've got my computer set up but still haven't had a chance to stop moving and actually use it. Tomorrow's the last big push of running around between multiple apartments, so after that I'm gonna be around so much more often.

Made time to hook up the NT this evening with the intent of finishing a few exits of New Comfy, but I spent an hour and a half on one single level (with no midway). It had some tricky midair fire flower stuff, and then you had to do more fire flower stuff while riding a disco shell (which was completely new to me and required claw grip). I haven't had to grind a section like that since Mostly Harmless. I enjoyed the level and I learned something new, but it was a massive difficulty spike for me. Still felt good to get back to Mario again, in any case.

So I took yesterday off from streaming and had some time, so I picked Comfort Zone back up. Not New Comfort Zone, mind, old Comfort Zone. Did a couple of exits of that, and I'm having a lot of fun with it. Noticed how it sort of interchanges more traditional-feeling hop-and-bop gameplay with innovation like the thwimp balancing level. Pretty cool.

If you finish the OG Comfort Zone, you'll absolutely fly through New Comfort Zone should you choose to play it. Outside of the disco fire flower level, I don't think any exit has taken me more than 20 minutes (most were done in less than 15), and I didn't even play past the first few levels of the original. I've only got three exits left in the hack, should finish tonight I think!

As expected, New Comfort Zone is done. Fantastic hack, I recommend it to you both. It really pares down the best parts of the original into a much more accessible package. I know Orka loves making hard stuff, but I hope he makes another hack in the same vein as this one. I had a blast and it left me wanting more.

I don't know what to play next! I don't really feel like Boogie Wonderland is what I want right now, so I'm at a bit of a loss. Maybe I'll take another look at Barb's suggested hacks and see if anything jumps out at me there.

I saw that Barb put Mario & Luigi Go to White Castle on his recommendations list, and I'd watched Shovda moderate it recently and she said it was very good, so I thought I'd try it out. Unfortunately, I'm not loving it as much as either of them. It's not bad, but it's not really doing anything new either. I'd guess I'm maybe halfway through, and a bunch of the sections have been pretty cool, but there've also been some that I really wasn't into (looking at you, water section). I'm enjoying it enough to finish, but coming on the heels of New Comfort Zone I can't help being a little disappointed. This one is fine, New Comfy was just a real high point in this year's hacks for me.

That's too bad, I was actually coming here to recommend that hack for you after watching the first part of Barb's playthrough on YouTube. I agree that it doesn't seem revolutionary, but there's something really cool about the whole game being basically one endless level. It's part of what I liked about the Nightmare Café games, come to think of it: the way that you just get absorbed into a kaizo odyssey without a sense of how far you've gone/have yet to go. I almost stopped watching the video, because I'm pretty sure I want to play this one myself. But I'll probably forget most of it by the time I actually have a chance to pick it up, so it's not a big deal.

I mentioned last page that Memento Mori seems like a pretty fun intermediate-level hack, so you could check that out. There's also this:

I don't really know much about this hack, but the creator is from Quebec! So, uh, play some and let me know how it is, because I've still got like 30 hours of GPW2 to get through.

I agree, and I think this is actually one of the high points of the hack. The creator really put a lot of effort into making all of the different sections transition into each other and feel like one continuous world, and that's rad. Honestly I think most of my criticism stems from inexperience on their part -- some of it just really feels like it's their first hack, which doesn't mean it's bad, just unpolished.

Memento Mori does look cool, I saw ThirdWall moderating a bit of that. That same creator also made Silencio (which is on Barb's recommendations list). I almost started that one, but I saw in the comments that it has a level built around reverse water, and I'm not sure I want to deal with that.

I haven't heard of Luminescent before, but I recognize basically all of those names as people who hang around GlitchCat's stream (om_nom hangs out in Snake's as well), so for me that's a pretty good sign! I'll keep an eye out tomorrow to see if anyone's playing.

So I was all set to come back here after finishing White Castle to say that actually, the hack turned out to be alright in the end, but the final level (the titular Castle) is miserable. Not only is it a massive difficulty spike, but it has a design choice so bafflingly terrible that I cannot possibly imagine what the creator was thinking when they decided to put it in: the rooms have multiple checkpoints in them, but when you die, you go back to the checkpoint before the last one you got. So for example if you die after getting the third checkpoint, you restart at the second one. Then if you die before reaching the third checkpoint again, you restart at the beginning of the room. It's unnecessarily punitive, and massively disrespectful of the player's time.

After two hours I made it through three long rooms and a boss fight, and fully expected to be rolling credits, but I ended up in another room. At this point it was past midnight so I decided to look up how much was left, and boy was I surprised: there were two more rooms, another boss, a cape room, and then a third boss. All of them are long, just as difficult, and have that shitty checkpoint system. So yeah, I'm done with this one. Mario and Luigi will just have to go hungry tonight.

THREE AND A HALF HOURS to get the checkpoint in Deuce Lair. I thought I might take a break to play Laughter House, but now I'm too worried that'll somehow mess up my checkpoint save. I'm going to finish this level, but after that I might need a break from this game - it'll depend how long the second half takes and how I end up feeling about it. So far, it really seems like I enjoy this game the most when it's on the easier side...which doesn't exactly bode well for the end-game.

Too bad about the ending to White Castle, I really thought that hack looked promising. I'll watch the rest of Barb's playthrough and decide if I want to play it myself based on what I see.

You can do it, Mike! Deuce Lair is about as real as it gets, definitely one of the hardest levels in the game. You've got this.

If you want to play White Castle, my advice would be to quit once you actually get to the castle. Everything after that seems to be Not Worth It.

I took Luminescent for a spin last night, not knowing anything about it, and it turned out to be absolutely not a hack for me. It's in what I think of as the "contemporary kaizo" style where everything is super fast and impossible to read without dying, plus a heavy dose of chocolate layered on top. I beat the first three exits and then quit at the fourth, when the hack asks you to manage steering snake blocks (you know, like in vanilla when you'd get a coin snake that you can direct with the d-pad) while you also continue to do kaizo platforming stuff at the same time. Some of the ideas I saw along the way were objectively pretty cool, but I didn't enjoy playing it. At the end of the day, I just want to run and jump.

Today I went in the complete opposite direction and played Memory Lane, a short 7-exit hack by Fryinb inspired by old school kaizo. Unsurprisingly, I had a good time with this one! I even managed to beat it in one sitting (playtime: three hours), which I've only done for a handful of hacks to date. The last two exits were a bit of a difficulty jump -- the penultimate level is an Ultra Star with a few really gross kaizo blocks -- but overall it was a good time. If you want a snack-sized intermediate hack with some solid vanilla platforming, Memory Lane is a fine choice.

I guess I should talk about the kaizo hacks I played today.

I beat Return to Subcon! I was worried I would have difficulty getting into it given it's based on an entirely different game, but turns out I caught on pretty quick. There's a lot of creativity here, and it makes me wonder how much further the creativity could be pushed if there was a burgeoning scene for it. An excellent hack, at any rate.

I also started a hack called Think Fast. Finished over half of the exits, and it's not really made a good impression on me. It feels like it wants to be a beginner-friendly hack in the vein of Super Moo World, but then it has weird difficulty spikes like one-tile gaps. And then there's the general flow killers like having you wait. A. Lot. I feel like the harder levels make a better impression because the creator feels less hamstrung, but wow is this hack all over the place. I'm going to finish it, but I don't think I can recommend it.

Finally, this week's Romhack Race was a debut level by Shoujo! Rough Around the Edges is a difficult escape sequence-style level, probably the hardest one I've ever beaten. I clocked in at just under two hours, though I wasn't last, so that was nice.

I saw you finish that level on the RHR channel, nice work! Looked quite tricky, and the Reznor boss sure did require a lot of shell jumps. I had been hoping to participate in a race soon, but we keep booking dinners with our respective parents and I’ll be busy next Saturday, too.

I’ve seen a few people play Luminescent on Twitch and, anecdotally, they didn’t seem to love it. I also saw drkrdnk playing Yikes Kaizo World, and the level he was on had a section that was absurdly long. If I was going to take a break from GPW2, a hack with extra long sections would be the last thing I’d choose!

Speaking of which, I’ve only played about 30 minutes of the 2nd half of Deuce Lair, but I’ve made it to the 1st back shot a few times. So far I like the second section better than the first, but if it’s as long then I’ll probably get sick of it before it’s over. Good music, at the very least.

You're not far from the end! Those backshots are pretty much the beginning of what I considered that level's final gauntlet. Learning to do them was pretty tough for me, but once you get them they're the last hard thing you'll need to worry about.

Speaking of Yikes Kaizo World, Barb himself quit that one partway through because he wasn't having fun. Make of it what you will.

Snake, it was really cool watching you play Return to Subcon the other day with GlitchCat in the chat. I really enjoyed seeing it. I'll have to dig up a VOD of that race level too. Shoujo is such a talented player, I'm really curious to see what her level design looks like.

Well I just caught YouFailMe streaming the end of Luminescent and he actually seemed quite happy with it, so I retract my earlier comment. Seems like it had a lot of chocolate mechanics, so it’ll be a little hit and miss for some folks, but overall he enjoyed it a lot. I saw one of the switch palaces and it had a super cool gimmick that was really fun to watch someone play.

Nice work on a fast checkpoint! I think the second half is easier than the first, so you'll probably be out of there soon.

Seems like everyone except me is loving Luminescent. I guess, as with so many things in my life, the problem is me. It makes sense though, it seems like it's definitely a hack for people who want something different besides running and jumping. And that's all I want!

Gonna play Super Amethyst Rocks next, I think. I saw Amethyst herself playing a bit of it today and it looks mostly like a fun time! Lots of exits though, not sure how long it'll take.
