The Disney+ thread of ever-growing entertainment monopolies

So Disney+ has been a thing for nearly a year now, I'm a fairly recent adopter. Eventually the siren's call of the Mandalorian, catching up on the DuckTales reboot, and All Of The Simpsons was just too much to bear. Plus it's been neat to revisit some old Disney shorts and I can watch Donald Duck be the source of his own misfortune until the sun burns out.

The Mandalorian is returning later this fall, and we're supposed to get some Marvel TV shows eventually. I'm also waiting for Owl House to be added to this thing so I can finally see it. And Muppets Now.... sure exists.

Has anyone watched Earth to Ned yet? I've seen a couple episodes and so far I really dig it. It has big early Muppet Show energy, though this might just be because the characters are still new, but I dig the talk show format and the traces of a season-long plot that will likely turn into a big nothingburger (but that will be the joke).

I haven’t watched Ned yet, but I’m a big fan of dang near every part of its production staff, along with the fact that it sounds like Space Ghost with Muppets

We subscribed a couple months, first when it came out and then again when they got Hamilton. We barely watched it, which is weird, because I assumed I'd be all over it. I think it'll be a streaming service that we subscribe to when a show we want to see is active, but let it lay fallow otherwise. For whatever reason I can never find something to watch when I'm just browsing.

The selection of old Disney shorts is pretty slim, and I'm pretty sure I've watched them all already. I really wish they had the Donald Duck army shorts. Though I did really enjoy the Pixar shorts that I haven't seen before (Kitbull is transcendent).

Also, Gargoyles is far better than it has any right to be. That show really holds up.

Wandavision and Loki both sound great, so I imagine we'll jump back in for those. I'll probably binge Owl House as well once it shows up.

Wait, Owl House is *NOT* in there? That was the single reason I was considering subscribing! (and by subscribing, I mean leeching off my friends family account).

Ok, fine, I've already watched all of it, but I was planning to do it again all the same to feed the views to the algorithm.

P.S: Owl House is VERY GOOD.

I liked my pre-reset disney plus thread that started with me doing a longform FUCK DISNEY better.

We never know what we've got until it's gone...

It was! I'm really digging it. I'm honestly kinda bummed it's only 10 episodes. I might actually prefer that this was a once-a-week airing instead of Muppets Now if it meant we got a whole lot more.

The most recent JJGO had one of the head writers on it, and implied that they recorded a bunch of episodes that hadn’t dropped yet, so they may be doing it in Netflix-style chunks

That Mulan remake sure didn’t pan out the way Disney expected, eh?
Curious what’s up. I’m largely ignorant besides hearing a few things via osmosis. Is this in reaction to the calls for boycotts? I dunno what Disney was thinking filming a major motion picture in part in Xinjiang.

I haven’t seen the movie but the whole thing sounds like an awful idea. Especially when you take a movie that was about feminism in a virulently patriarchal society, and then remake the bad guy into a literal witch.

Disney really wanted that FULL THEATRICAL RELEASE money, realized that shit wasn't gonna happen, then put it on d+ as a premium deal, only to make the mistake of telling people it would be on the normal platform in December, causing most people to go "that's cool I'll wait."

The movie itself was also pretty bad, apparently.

We watched an old tv special, "The Mouseketeers at Walt Disney World" on this service. The "Drama" part of the special was horrible, par for the course for Disney stuff. Seeing the clips from Disney World in 1977 was interesting, but the best part was the commercials. They just uploaded this special from a tape backup, maybe from a very early VHS or Betamax adopter, and didn't edit out the Pillsbury Plus cake mix (the Plus is Pudding), the Tonka Toy Van, or the Meow Mix commercials. It's worth it just to see how subdued advertising was in the late 70's, before the 80's got all radical.

Basically they turned a fairly pretty animated movie into a high-budget yet bog-standard wuxia/wushu film, which has basically zero traction outside of China and wuxia fans in parts elsewhere. The whole no theaters thing and $30 rental fee on top of D+ is just the extra shitty twist on top, but I'd be curious to see how it's doing in places that have theaters open.

Finished Duck Tales.

Now what?

I would also suggest TRON: Uprising.

But that'd just leave you with an even bigger "now what?"

Tatiana Maslany is gonna be She-Hulk. Not one of my first choices but very close to the kind of person who I'd want for my She-Hulk (I was thinking Iliana Glazer).

Oh, definitely. And what I wanted for a She-Hulk is someone with overtly comedic chops and someone who wouldn't come to mind for buff superhero since She-Hulk is going to be a special effect anyway.

I know little about her filmography, save for her few appearances on CBB, but she does seem like an extremely good choice for She Hulk

Also “Oh Boy! She Hulk!”
