I've totally fallen in love with Spiderweb Software games recently. I'm playing Avernum atm and I found a cave of friendly giant spiders (all named Spider. One of them, Spider, will give me some loot if I can find it. "Just look for Spider!" the spiders say), and I love this little encounter.

Also, Spring Breeze is basically the tutorial for Kirby Super Star. If I remember correctly, the bosses even have lower HP than when they show up in other game modes. Not that it gets outright difficult very often, but bosses will have more bite eventually.
Ah, that makes a lot of sense. I mean, I really don't mind easy bosses, I just like spending time with them. So having them die instantly makes me a bit sad.

Also, why am I fighting against Lolo and Lala? They are my friends! I helped them rescue each other! Why do I have to disturb them, while they are pushing boxes around? Not cool, Kirby. Also, I want a new Lolo game.

Spider is some of the best characters in the series, IMO.

The series is always very vague about Kirby's species. The original Dream Land manual talks about a bunch of Dream Landers, and Kirby is identified as a "little boy," which indicates to me that he's a member of the same species as the others. There may be others, but he may be the only one that incredibly powerful. We don't really know.
You have the Waddles, who have a similar body type but lack mouths. Meta Knight and Galacta Knight both seem to be a similar species to Kirby, and both have powers, though they lack his copy abilities. I believe the only other creature we’ve seen with similar powers is Gooey, who is a discarded blob of Dark Matter. And then you have Void, an eldritch god with Kirby’s face, who also might be made of Dark Matter.

So Kirby may be a typical Dream Lander, or he may be an otherworldly force of destruction and chaos that happens to be friendly.

I haven't heard of this game before but this is wonderful.
It's available on Steam and it (and most other games from that developer) is available for Macs. Games by that dev tend to have simple graphics but a good amount of depth and gameplay and text to read

Phantasy Star IV is not revolutionary at all, but it is maybe the best distillation of the old-school JRPG we've ever gotten.

The Great Cave Offensive from Kirby Superstar is beaten, with all treasures. Some of them were really hard to get...well, some were well hidden, two were just in really mean places.

Pretty cool concept, especially that big castle, that you can completely ignore, if you don't mind missing half the treasures. And yes, the game got surprisingly challenging - not just compared to earlier, but compared to what I remember of Kirby games, with regards to difficulty. Did die a few times.

I do like the trolley rides, where you just destroy everything in your path. I do feel a bit bad, though. Half the creatures I kill there are sleeping bears, chicks and some guys who just clean the place with a broom. Just so I can get more treasure. Guys, I think Kirby is the real villain here. Imagine you are just doing your job, cleaning a street, and some smiling jerk drove over you? Not even getting slower? Yeah, Kirby is a monster.

I'm plummeting down the black hole of nerddom, because I'm playing (and loving) Train Sim World 2. I've always loved the London Underground and the Bakerloo line is in it. Turns out driving tube trains is really fun.

I'll branch out and go at ludicrous speeds around Germany next.

Playing Stardew Valley with the new Beach Farm. I never got very good with animals and ranching before now, and don't have alotta' choice with how little area can be auto-watered in this layout. Like a year into this new place and its one of the easiest to manage layouts I've come across. I guess at least the way I set it up? Any way nice challenge that panned out better than I'd ever thought.

I got a Mega SG recently and was fiddling with the settings and stuff. I wanted to see how it would handle a multi-region cart so I put in Streets of Rage 2 (the answer: it started Bare Knuckle 2, but I got to the PAL version with a little menu fiddling). Then I wound up playing through to level 7, where I ran out of continues on the elevator.

SoR2 is pretty good! I never owned it as a kid but I played a fair bit of two player at a friend’s house. I’ve played a little as an adult, but I think never past the first stage or so. At first it seemed really basic and I was wondering what the fuss is about, but then I figured out you get a special move by tapping forward twice before attacking and the game opened up. I dunno if I never knew that or if I’d forgotten, but that, along with knowing how to do the back attack, makes a big difference. Bit of practice and I might be able to beat it.

Forward and A gives you another one, generally with better range. Also, and this is important, pressing jump while holding an enemy performs a vault, which adds to the number of throws, holds, and submissions you can perform.

If you're hungering for more technique, Skate's the way to go... there's a lot of cool stuff he can do, but it takes a little more skill to do it. He actually throws enemies DURING a vault (press C, immediately press B afterward), and his double tap move makes him glide along on his rollerblades. He's more damage prone than the other characters, but he's fun to use when the other three get boring.

The forward A is generally better at dishing high damage to one target/a few grouped targets. It will drain health on every use, regardless of whether it actually hits.

Enjoying Carrion. It's not an all-timer for me or anything, but it's fun to play as a wad of tentacles and teeth playing cat-and-mouse in the air ducts and passages of a sprawling research base. And the animation of the creature is great—it sends out tendrils to pull itself along, stretches and squishes through passages, etc. Definitely worth the $5 I spent for it with the Epic coupon.
I just started this and I'm really enjoying it so far. Traversal is really fun, glorping around walls and ceilings quickly; tearing vents open and hurling them is extremely satisfying. Doing the same to humans feels kind of finicky but is also very satisfying. I'm still trying to figure out how to best address combat situations besides "Charge in and kill everything very fast," especially since half the time I kill everything only to find more grates I could have snuck underneath them with. But there's something to be said for "HERE COMES MEATBALL!!" and just slapping everything to pieces.

Minor gripes so far: Can't wait to find more skills, though the first two skills being on the same button is a bit aggravating. The human screams are a nice touch but do get kind of repetitive and piercing. I'm not looking forward to getting to the point where the lack of a map becomes a pain.

"Charge in and kill everything very fast" is usually the way. Later you have to be more careful against harder types of enemy, but it's still "take advantage of an opening and strike very fast," primarily. You get stronger abilities (three different sets of them divided by overall glorp mass) but you're always vulnerable. You're kind of like a big, amorphous ninja of teeth and raw tissue.

The lack of map is never much of a pain, the various areas are pretty self-contained and you don't backtrack much (except by design). There's an area or two with branching paths from a hub area, but they all loop back to the hub.

I don’t tend to use this sort of thing because of the cost in health, even though probably a lot of the time I’ll wind up losing more health by taking more hits.

I'm replaying Lufia 2 for the first time in over a decade. Still very enjoyable. I only did two dungeons, plus the tutorial one, so I'm not that far in, and still have only one party member. But it is very enjoyable, if pretty formulaic.

I really love the bright, colorful artstyle. What surprises me is, how much I enjoyed the first two dungeons. These are generally the parts in JRPGs that I like less, but here, the dungeon design is really nice. I love the puzzles (even if there haven't been any hard ones), and it's nice that you get really good stuff, if you explore. Including stuff that is behind hidden walkways. You get nice, good equipment that way.

Also, the IP system, which lets you perform special attack, which varies with you equipment, is pretty great, and feels like a variation of FF VIIs limit breaks. Except that you really can use them whenever you want (in FF VII, the attack command is overwritten by the Limit Break), and it doesn't use up the whole gauge. These abilities also aren't as strong as Limit Breaks, so that's fair.

I guess you've probably forgotten over the years but more powerful IP Skills will use up more of the gauge. I think it's a shame more games haven't copied this system - I think it is the right way to do skills from equipment.

It's been sitting in my Steam library for God knows how long, and it came well recommended, so on a whim I booted up Saints Row 4. Got far enough in that it stopped giving me the main tutorial quests and unlocked all the DLC.

This is one of those games with that thing where you can run fast and jump high, and running fast and jumping high allows you to reach orbs which make you run faster and jump higher. I love it when games have that. I think I'll stick with it for a while. Seems like the sort of game that's fun to periodically drop into.

However, after a couple hours I've realized that I dislike the hair I gave my character during character creation. Anybody know if there's a way to change that?
