Crosspost to hit this thread:

The current event in Romancing SaGa Re;univerSe (the FFRK-style SaGa gacha game) is a tie-in to the release of the 2nd album from Destiny 8, which is basically The Black Mages for the SaGa series - a band formed by the composer (or mainly SE, probably) to do rock covers of the game series' songs.

Anyway, the main takeaway here is that Kenji Ito is now a character you can get in that game.

There's a SaGa livestream at 3 AM PST tonight. Kawazu and producer Ichikawa will be there, and the stream is about "the SaGa series." Excite??? (for tomorrow because lol I'm not staying up for that)

EDIT: lol it was a bust, SaGa collection is coming to Steam and mobile, and all the rest was RS gacha stuff

Yup.

Sure is a thing. I'm sure there is a market for these out there, but I'm not it. I would have considered paying money for ports of the DS remakes, or if this collection was on Switch or PS4. But putting emulated versions of the original GameBoy games I already own, on the two platforms where game emulation is already the easiest thing already, is a hard pass.

While I'm glad the SaGa Collection will be on a couple more platforms, I've already had my fill of it on Switch. FFL1 is way too brutal for me to make any real progress, FFL2's got cool stuff but the difficulty level ramps up quickly (this is exacerbated by the encounter rate), and FFL3's lacking a lot of the cool SaGa-y stuff in its base Game Boy form.

Meanwhile I might be these again on my PC/Steam Deck, since I had absolute blast with these on Switch

I just played through the remake of SaGa 1 on Wonderswan.

I loved it. By far the best version of the game (and I liked it a lot on Gameboy, too). Really nice graphics, great QoL improvements (you can preview what monster you're going to get before you eat their meat! I used a monster on this playthrough, and it was a blast!). Music is great, and the (slightly) expanded script is nice. It's also nice to see the (late game spoilers follow) Tokyo references intact - makes it clear that Suzaku's area really was Tokyo. Also, killing God with a chainsaw still works! I hung on to the one I found the whole game and didn't touch it to see if it'd work at the end, and it totally did haha. "Cut God to pieces," the text said. My party was male Human, female Human, Mutant/Esper, and a Monster.

I know it's Wonderswan and I'm the only one here who probably has one (with the possible exception of Tegan? Don't remember), but track down a rom of this and have yourself a good time. Only took me 5 hours and 18 minutes to beat, though I guess I knew what I was doing, generally. I suppose 10 hours would be a good guess for someone who hasn't played through the original or something. Although honestly the NPCs give good enough clues as to what to do for the most part.

Someday I'll grok the Romancing SaGa games. Until then, I absolutely adore the original Gameboy trilogy (and their remakes - I've heard the 3rd game is great on DS, though I haven't played it yet. Kawazu worked on it! I will definitely play it eventually, maybe after Final Fantasy IV Pixel Remake).

Been playing the DS remake of SaGa 3 this weekend, and while there's still plenty of game left so this could change, but... I think it's my favorite SaGa game ever?

It's very well designed. Not only did Kawazu make the battle system more interesting by making it play more like other SaGa games (there's skill sparking! Limited use weapons! Stat ups based on battle actions!), but kept the interesting bits of the original Game Boy version - namely, the transformation system, where you can change the race of any of your characters on a continuum between Monster-Beastman-Human/Esper-Cyborg-Mecha. But that's not all! Enemies have passive abilities that can be inherited when you eat their meat or install their parts, such as Wind Resist or Accurate, but also negative abilities like Fire Weakness, Inaccurate, etc. Once your character has six abilities, if you inherit another ability, you can overwrite one of your choice. The character building system is super robust and interesting as a result of all these choices.

The sidequest system is great, too - you have multiple ways to clear most sidequests, involving either using time travel by choice, or not using it, which gets you different rewards. There's a tracking system for the quests, too, and even after you clear them, there's question marks for the outcomes you didn't select, which I assume (though I'm not sure as I haven't beaten the game yet) can be filled in playing New Game +.

The music is full of great remixes, the battle system is fast (and has a fast forward option, which stays on or off until you change it again or power cycle), and I like the graphics. SaGa 3 DS is better than the remake of 2 on DS, and that game was pretty great, too. I highly, highly recommend playing SaGa 3 DS if you like the SaGa series at all and haven't played it yet. I'm having a blast.

Well, you may have sold me on it. I didn't cotton to SaGa 2 quite as much (at least the remake; the Game Boy version is one of my favorites), but I've always bounced off of the Game Boy version of SaGa 3.

I'm really impressed with it. Put 11 hours into it this weekend! I've barely done anything else lol

If it was more readily available, SaGa 3 on DS would definitely be one of my go to recommendations for people getting into Kawazu's work. It's so thoroughly remade that it feels more like a modern SaGa game and a precursor to the accessibility of Scarlet Grace than a GameBoy game. I do like the SaGa 2 DS remake as well, but I think that hews pretty closely to the GameBoy game and some of its new additions (a bajillion enemies per encounter) aren't necessarily for the better...

Now that's how you know a game has its hooks in. Feels good when you find a game that you enjoy that much!

Great, now I feel even more forelorn that this will never get a proper release haha.

(Really though, always glad to see some SaGa 3 love, that game is fantastic and always been my fave)

Hope springs eternal... We got Scarlet Grace and the SaGa Frontier remake, so SaGa is not dead in the west... I'd love to see even barebones uprezzed ports to modern systems of the DS games (and get the Wonderswan version of 1 on a different system).

Well, we know they're going to make Unlimited Saga and Minstrel Song remasters, AND they're working on a new SaGa as well, so... it'll be A While before they can address the DS remakes.

I think they said SaGa Frontier 2, also? I hope so, that's probably highest on my wishlist right now.

I would almost certainly buy a remaster of SaGa Frontier 2. I know it has its detractors in the fanbase, but I loved it.

I thought SaGa Frontier 2 was great right up until the last chapter and the other last chapter which respectively boil down to like a 1 in 16 odds lotto on whether you get to finish if you do everything right and a final dungeon party I really feel you don't have enough time to whip into final boss fighting shape.

Everything up to there though? Gorgeous game. Interesting premise.

I remember that fight, and it was tough, but I got through it, so maybe that impacts my enjoyment. It's entirely possible I was forewarned and was prepped, but it's been so long that I don't remember.

The original Japanese version was easier so presumably it would be used as the base for the new version instead of the localization which botched the difficulty curve.

I think the infamous tactics battle near the end of SaGa Frontier 2 is hard but fine, although I only played it in Japanese so if the difficulty is changed maybe that's why?

I do think though that there should be a very obvious flash forward scene that reveals the final party at some point, so when those party members show up you know who you need to be preparing to deal with the final dungeon and boss which can be quite difficult. Otherwise... the game is improved a lot by looking up who will be in the final dungeon.

Beat SaGa 3 DS. Loved it nearly beginning to end - the final dungeon/final boss is a bit ridiculous (though, admittedly, fair, once you figure out how to counter its attacks and that you have the ability to run from battles to conserve weapons, which I didn't realize literally until halfway through the final dungeon lol). Took me two tries on the final boss, mostly because I wasted too many good weapons on a fake first fight the first time.

Definitely going to mess around with New Game +, since all your stats carry over besides passive abilities, unique story related weapons, and time ship parts. That's damn near everything! Kawazu is so generous lol

I'll reiterate for anyone with the ability to play this who likes SaGa games at all - give it a shot. It's extremely, extremely good, and is currently my favorite SaGa game (and one of the best DS games, to boot).

Got the secret ending on my New Game + playthrough of SaGa 3 DS. I don't have much to add to my last post besides being able to fine tune my characters through another playthrough made them powerhouses, so the secret final boss wasn't so bad (and the regular final boss was a pushover, which was not the case the first time around lol).

Honestly, trying to come up with something negative to say about the game is difficult. I suppose I wish battles loaded faster? They're not, say, Final Fantasy IX levels of slow (not even close), so even that complaint feels minor. I suppose if you don't like SaGa gameplay this may not convince you. Although it's extremely generous and fair with the difficulty, really (there are no Life Points, for example - as long as your whole party doesn't die, any dead characters will be revived for free after battle with 1 HP).

I adore the game. If you like SaGa at all, I'm begging you to try the DS remake of SaGa 3, it is so, so good.

Alright, some SaGa Scarlet Grace questions (I look at the "Tips" section as it updates, but I may have missed if these questions were answered in there):
  1. What is that blue bar at the bottom of the turn order that slowly fills throughout battle? Is that related to Benisons?
  2. Does this game have that mechanic where the battles get harder/enemies get stronger if you fight too many battles/grind, like in Romancing SaGa 2/3?
  3. I haven't done it yet, but should I be training characters with multiple weapons (i.e. swapping weapons around after battles, to glimmer new techs or whatnot)?
  4. Stats (besides HP and weapon proficiency) seem to only go up via upgrading equipment. Is this correct, or can you grow stats by battling, similar to the Gameboy SaGa games somehow?
  5. Is there a way to get new formations other than recruiting new characters? I ask because the only new formation I've gotten so far was when I recruited this axe user thief girl (who rocks, btw).
  6. RE: magic - I have a mage who has leveled up two of his spells, and as I've beaten battles, I've filled the bars more, but the Restoration spell I have won't seem to level up (and the tooltip says I don't have a high enough... something or other to level it, anyway). How do I level up that spell? Keep using it during battle until it levels, or some other way?

Thanks in advance. Sorry about all the questions, but the game is pretty opaque lol

1. Higher blue bar-->Unison attacks do more damage

2. Battle Rank raises somewhat quickly for new encounters, and very slowly for repeating encounters. So, if you want to grind without enemies getting stronger, you can do a repeatable battle over and over. But Battle Rank also affects how high your skill levels go before they plateau and how likely you are to learn new techs/spells and how likely it is a skill will rank up, so trying to keep Battle Rank low won't necessarily make your life easier... If you're struggling, doing some new side quests to have new encounters will make your skills and HP able grow higher and make it easier to learn techs/spells. Grinding a repeatable battle will raise your HP and skills to whatever the current plateau is, and so is probably only the best choice if you want to get a new character up to their HP and skill level plateaus.

3. A character you use over the course of the game will probably either be extremely proficient with one weapon type or pretty good with two. Training Roles by learning techs across weapons is probably best left for New Game+, unless you're using a guide and meta-gaming to aim for some specific Role. Similarly, you probably want to focus on at most 2-3 elements for magic users, and 3 is honestly stretching it a bit. (The elements typically considered best are tree and water.) You will want to swap w/in the same weapon type to gain techs. (One-handed swords are one weapon type, but different types of one-handed swords teach different techs.)

4. Correct, stats only go up via equipment. So, pick a speciality based on those initial stats. If an initial skill stat is 0, that means a character has a permanent deficiency in that skill/element.

5. Formations come from recruitment.

6. If a spell won't level up, you probably need to raise basic proficiency in that element higher. If base proficiency isn't raising, you'll probably need to fight more new battles first (i.e. progress the story, do new sidequests), because Battle Rank is tied to both enemy strength and the current plateau of how high your skills will grow. There's no point in absorbing fluxus into a spell the game says will absolutely not level up, use it for something else. You get more fluxus from more difficult battles, so it could also be that the battle is too easy relative to how much fluxus you need. Ranking up a spell is pretty rare. The highest Rank is 3, which you'll probably only reach for maybe 1 or 2 spells you use extremely often. Basically everything in your standard repertoire will reach Rank 1, eventually. Rank 2 is not as rare as 3, but much rarer than 1. Learning spells is also pretty rare. There aren't very many of them, and generally they all have a unique function that isn't duplicated by other spells.
