I mostly agree with you, it serves to lessen the need to "explore every corner of every room, who knows what's tucked away over there?", however, I'm surprised you mentioned DoS, I actually found that to be even more egregious due to the new "soul-fusing" options, and Bloodstained actually toned it down a bit.

Soul Fusion is a similar concept to Bloodstained's crafting, but it crucially doesn't replace all the treasure in the game with random crafting materials. Consequently, it feels a lot more optional to me. Plus, you can make a lot of boss weapons that way, which don't feel as bad as "well I have this rock, so now I can make the middle short sword/claymore/boots/dagger/gun/spear/etc."
The results of the survey have been published. I've been told about a thousand people participated, so it doesn't exactly represent the will of everyone who played the first game. But there is some interesting data here. Unfortunately, of all the characters listed, the fewest people voiced interest in playing as Anne. On the other hand, an overwhelming majority favored unique environments over sheer map size, which is heartening.
Speaking of this game - it's currently on sale on Steam until the 26th.

I’m hoping it means the plot is about trying to make a home loan application, or finding a good sitter at the last minute.
Zangetsu is the main character, and the villains are his health insurance company. You need to hunt each level of management down and beat them into accepting his claims for the medical bills following his injuries in the first game.
I would like to play this game!
