This just makes me hope we skip over any rumored Pro/New/whatever and go straight to Switch 2.

I can sympathize with average consumers who wanted more out of the OLED Model announcement. I can even sympathize with the insiders who were just posting what they heard and never promised that a 4K model was actually coming.

I don’t sympathize with all the YouTubers who were hyping up the possibility of a Pro model without any concrete details to back it up in order to generate views now posting videos on how “disappointed” they are now like they were innocent in setting expectations too high. No, y’all can eat the “I was wrong” crow now.

I'm just thrilled I'm not tempted to upgrade like I was with DS Lite/DSi/New 3DS/New 3DS XL, and so on. This is great for people who don't already own a Switch! But I've already got one and I'm good with it. I'd rather they do something like this rather than an incremental upgrade and then expect me to buy the newest full-on upgrade two years after that.

This is exactly my feeling. I was putting off buying a Switch waiting for this, and now I feel justified in that decision. The price difference is small enough (only $50, even in Canada) that it's a no-brainer over the basic model.

Can you imagine the reaction from The Gamers if Nintendo did actually announce this during E3? It would've been A Disaster For Sure!!!

Happening anyways, Yangus. Like I said on Twitter, if I can borrow a wrestling phrase, they've worked themselves into a shoot.

Hey now, it's not JUST a better screen. It's also apparently a better speaker, and a kickstand that looks actually trustworthy.

I mean, Nintendo has done this before. I saw someone post a pic of the AGS-101, and that's a really good comp for this. Yeah, they may have had bigger plans because of the pandemic. Or not. Cue the endless speculation in more clickbait videos!

My launch Switch is pretty beat up. I've lugged it around for travel and such, and it turns out those things aren't exactly as rugged as a Game Boy. There are cracks in the case and the kickstand doesn't work any more. Truth be told, I was thinking of getting a new one anyway and hacking the old one into an emulation device. So perhaps that's just what I'll do.

Nice enough to upgrade? Dunno, depends. Will we get a Metroid themed one?

Hopefully the lack of an upgraded chip means scalpers will be disinterested too for anyone who just needed to get a new unit for whatever reason.
Well, that was naive of me. I guess Nintendo doesn’t have to worry about the Steam Deck just yet…

I was able to snag one of these on a pre-order, more just to see if I could get one than actually needing one. Thinking about handing down my Switch to my youngest - he has a Switch Lite and one of the sticks is wonky - and keeping the OLED for myself, or maybe just cancelling it. I'll make a decision closer to release. Those white joycons do look so good, tho.

But also: you've already got a Series X and PS5, so what you're mostly missing out on would be first-party Nintendo games that run in 4k or whatever. But Nintendo has never really tried to make games with high-end specs like that in mind.
This is where I'm coming from. I have a PS5, and a pretty decent computer. Switch is there just for its exclusives, which are mostly things that are stylized/abstracted enough that higher resolutions would have diminishing returns. I view the machine as a handheld that just happens to be able to hook up to a TV, even though I play my Switch docked like, 98% of the time too. I just don't really care that much about crazy graphics on them as long as the games are good. GB wasn't a frustrating machine to own despite it not having the horsepower of PSX. Same with GBA not being up to par with an Xbox, or the DS not being on par with a PS3. Or a 3DS not being on the level with a PS4.

You’re Bound to like the next games coming to Earth next week for SNESflix;

Claymates
Jelly Boy
Bombuzal

At least they’re adhering to releasing the games I saw for rent at the gas station, every weekend

SpoonyBard

Threat Rhyme

I remember being vaguely interested in Claymates from what I saw of it in Nintendo Power. Is it actually any good?

I’d put it somewhere between Bubsy and Bubsy 2 in terms of Sonic the Hedgehog knockoffs.

IIRC, the main villain was a witch doctor, so that should also inform you what kind of experience it was

I really enjoyed Claymates as a kid, but I haven't played it since and kids are not generally known for their discerning taste. I'd be curious to see what it's like now, though.

This is the first time where all the games in an update trigger no recollection at all in my mind.

There was this brief moment of excitement when I thought the first game was Clayfighters. Alas, dreams crushed, soul rendered, etc.

I’ll certainly say that Jellyboy (which I don’t think is related to Smartball, AKA Jerry Boy, but I may be mistaken) has some uniquely terrible box art.

Conversely, Bombuzal (or Kablooie) has some very excellent boxart considering the graphics in the game itself

Phantoon

I cuss you bad
I remember in my days of wishing I could afford to import the spanking new Super Famicom seeing that "Bombuzal" was one of the first games listed in the import adverts in Mean Machines. Finally I get to see what that was.

The music in Bombuzal sounds like what a Mega Drive fanboy would make to parody SNES music.

Japan got Shin Megami Tensei if, which Atlus/Sega/Nintendo should localize as Persona Zero. 😈

I loved Claymates (due to nostalgia reasons) but have a hard time defending it today. If you're in the Stuart Gipp "are any 2D platforming collectathons truly bad, really?" demographic, it is great.

I think the last SNESflix update was about a month ago, so hopefully this means that the pipes are flowing again if nothing else
