Playdate Has Me Feeling Cranky

Yeah, this is exactly my feeling. It's weird, because I spent a couple hundred bucks on a Lego set a few months ago, and I would happily do that again (not all the time, but ocassionally). But that was a "non-video game" expenditure - and when I think about all the time and money I spend on video games already, it's hard for me to justify adding more to that bucket for something so niche as this.
"twee" was also the word that came to mind. and not to say this in a disparaging way since this is obviously the appeal to me and plenty of other people, but i don't see how a weird little anachronistic game system with a lineup of exclusive indie games is not at least a little "hipster". it's possible i'm just out of touch with what everyone else knows from following actual gaming news or something but i kind of assume that most people out in the wild would not recognize the thing if i started carrying it around
i'm definitely curious and happy to have a while to think about whether to take the plunge, though. i've certainly invested plenty of my own time/money/attention into weird little handhelds and just what has been revealed about the lineup and everything is more than a little intriguing; i fully agree with madhair that the drip feed approach to a library is fantastic, as it both paces out each new title as something exciting to look forward to as it approaches and cuts back on some of the common difficulties of just ending up with 50 new things to try all at once, not even knowing where to start.

I think it's funny how oppositional the terms "pretentious" and "hipster" have been taken mostly because if anything else fit that egregious bill it was this thing. I personally do not think either term is insulting but I know that's not typical. Look what I'm saying is I am just really super smart, ok. Praise my smartness

I mean, Panic Inc. is based in Portland. The crank has real "Put a Bird on It" energy and I am digging it.
When the game maker comes out I should make a game with a black screen that just displays "you've probably never heard of it" when you turn the crank.
This thing looks neat but $179 is a lot to gamble on a handheld with two dozen games of unknown quality/longevity and anything that's really worth playing will probably be adapted to gaming platforms where they'll get way more exposure eventually.

Right now I'm imagining somebody releasing a crank attachment for the original Game Boy, which would enjoy 5 minutes of modest press until somebody posts about accidentally ripping the link cable port off the motherboard.

There are a lot of good game makers involved. Diego Garcia and Bennet Foddy are making games. I can’t remember them all offhand, but I saw a bunch of names I recognized. And there are a few games specifically from underrepresented communities, which is great. Oh, and I’ve heard good things about Poolside FM.
They collaborated with Teenage Engineering on the hardware. And Panic has been making Mac software since the 90’s. A boutique handheld is not for everyone, but it seems like they are putting out a solid product, from what I can see.

Look if they're never putting out god-damn UFO 50 (WHERE IS UFO 50?!) then this will have to do.
Jokes (...?) aside, I do think this is really cool. I'm mildly concerned about longevity, but I wouldn't be too surprised if when the planned "seasons" have played out, this thing goes fully open source and we start seeing the truly wild shit. I know devkits are in the hands of some really cool, creative people (insider-ish smug smile) and I'm really excited about the prospects of this dumb piece of stupid garbage for bougie idiots. Like me!!!

The chances of actually avoiding spoilers until getting my hands on the system seem pretty slim. "Don't tell me what games this system plays" is a pretty tall order, media-wise. I'm guessing their marketing department probably balked at the idea since they're doing the equivalent of "hiding" Christmas presents in a shopping bag on the couch.

Now that I've seen this, Crank-a-Move is almost a mandatory release on the Playdate.
