Preordered Allstars even though I'm sure none of the quality of life control things I would want have been done to any of the games.

I wonder how...watchy...the Game and Watch is. I could use a new bedside clock and if it has some real use in that dimension that might put me over the edge.

Debating whether I want to get 3D All-Stars or not. I mean, it's great that it exists... but I also have all three of these still in original form. Guess I'll wait until it's obvious all the physical copies are sold out and I can't get it anymore. :p

Its three games I would pay at least $50 for individually. So if you think about it, by buying three at $60 I'm actually saving $90.

did i do all of that?

I just realized all of these games are older than the NES trilogy was when the original All Stars was released.

Portability is pretty nice, though.

Oh God I'm old

It's worse than that. Super Mario Bros was 1985 and Super Mario All-Stars was 1993. 8 years between the oldest game and the collection. Super Mario Galaxy - the newest game - came out in 2007. It's older than SMB was when its collection came out by five whole years. 62% older!

That montage at the end skipped a LOT. Galaxy 2, Mario Land 2, New SMB U, New SMB 2, SMB The Lost Levels...very odd.
Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, aka Super Mario Bros 2.
Super Mario Land 2.
Super Mario Galaxy 2.
New Super Mario Bros. 2.
New Super Mario Bros. U, which is a direct sequel, so you could arguably call it New Super Mario Bros. Wii 2.

I see the pattern here.

I'm amused that some people think that a lack of a mention think Nintendo "hate" a game. That's not how hate works at all.

The same amount of time has elapsed between SMB1 and Mario 64 as between Mario Galaxy and Mario Odyssey.

Further thoughts that this collection is going to have had the bare minimum done to it to make it playable: Mario Galaxy received a port to the Nvidia Shield a couple of years back, which shares the same family SoC (Tegra) as the Switch. Eurogamer took a look at that release when it was new and concluded it most likely was running on a Wii emulator. It provided 1080p by expanding the 4:3 image up to 1920x1404 and then downscaling the vertical to get 1920x1080. I get a bit fuzzy on whether a Wii emulator should be able to run a Gamecube game (the Wii had hardware emulation of the Gamecube but I don't know if that functionality would have to exist in an emulator) but I think it's pretty safe to say if the same emulator could run Sunshine it probably is. Mario 64 is probably a ROM with a different emulator wrapped around it as well.

Also, if Galaxy is based on the Shield port, that bodes well for a more traditional control scheme because I'm pretty sure that Shield version did not have motion controls.

Thank you for reminding me that I need to wait for reviews of these ports before I buy this game (digitally).

Per Polygon, you can play Galaxy handheld and without motion controls. Motion controls are required for the pointer, but if you’re playing handheld, it’s replaced by the touch screen. Which is SUPER awkward but the only practical solution.

In lamer news, Sunshine will not be compatible with GameCube controllers.

I’m excited to replay Sunshine as it’s the least fresh in my mind and furthermore, because the games inexplicably beautiful water textures are just hypnotic

See, based on the video clips the problem with that idea is I'd just sit there staring at my clock to see what cool scenes it turned into the clock numbers and then I'd be late for everything.

Galaxy came out when? No... nope, I refuse to believe that.

Anyway I've never played either Sunshine or Galaxy, so I'm tempted, but my backlog is such that I'm in no hurry and can wait for reviews of how the emulation goes. Def keeping an eye on 3D World +, though, as I haven't played any version of that either and it's actually getting more of a significant upgrade treatment.

3D World is another big entry on, in fact may be the last big entry on, the "games I would have gotten on WiiU had I gotten one" list, so I'm definitely excited to pick that up, especially with how well-loved it seems to be.

I feel compelled to get 3D all-stars to revisit Sunshine (which I seemed to like more than the median) and to play Galaxy for the first time.

While we're talking about the relative age of games in collections, I feel compelled to mention that the Smashing Pumpkins song 1979 was written in 1995. If it were written today, the song would be called 2004.

Not having a Switch, this is another game that I would really love to get and can't (together with so, so many others. I need a Switch). But someone said that people should give Sunshine another shot, which I just wanted to agree with. It's a really fun, if flawed, game.

ive never played sunshine, so 3d all stars seems like a good get, 3d world i still have and play on wii u which is my preferred setup anyway, but i'll still probably get for the added content, and super mario 35 seems like a great idea that will get old very very quickly so i think it's good that it's limited.

I really like Sunshine. It's totally it's own thing, and that's a good thing. Really happy its getting another chance in the *ahem* sun.

Pre-ordered. While I have all three in the original forms, I have neither the space nor inclination to keep those consoles hooked up, and all of my CRTs are long gone. Plus, I'm a sucker for collections. It's just nice to have everything in one spot.

Played a little Super Mario All-Stars yesterday; first time in decades. I'm disappointed that SMB1 and Lost Levels messed up their physics (I've screwed up jumps I could make in the 8-bit originals), but IMO it's worth playing just for the awesome port of Super Mario Bros. 2 and the Mario Bros.-esque battle mode from Super Mario Bros. 3 being available as its own separate option.

Glad I didn't blow cash on this game on Wii, though.

One thing I have noticed is the compilation looks to be less flickery with overlapping sprites than the +World version was. I mean, the SMB2 sprites still flicker a bit when you throw things at stuff, but there's a lot less of it now.

Also I recall its version of Super Mario World had slowdown where the original game didn't, so maybe some coding got screwed up when jamming those games together?

One of these days, I would like a version of OG Star Fox that takes advantage of the faster processor speeds.

Yeah, SMB is the weakest game on that collection. SMB2 and 3 feel spot on to me, plus I like the extra colors and the save feature in SMB3. I haven't played enough Lost Levels to know how faithful it is to the NES game, but as I recall there are differences in the physics between the two NES games. Isn't Lost Levels the first one where you can do a high bounce off an enemy?
