Animal Crossing General: New Horizons in our New Horizon!

I definitely understand the complaints about New Horizons and don't want to tell people how to feel. If they're disappointed and like New Leaf more, that's fine, and the reasons people cite make sense. I have big complaints about both games.

I personally still like New Horizons more. The games have different priorities. New Leaf has a lot more stuff (though 655 pieces were added in Welcome amiibo, four years after release), but what New Horizons does have is more detailed and vibrant. For instance, here's the train set as it appears in New Leaf and Pocket Camp:

And here's how the train set appears in New Horizons, in one of four seasonal variants:

A lot of the items in New Leaf seem like newly-textured versions of models they've been re-using for a decade or more, which works because it's a portable-only game on a lil' screen. But upgrading everything to HD just isn't practical. Hopefully they keep updating it and by the time New Horizons is four years old its library can stand up better to New Leaf's, but in my opinion the trade-off was worth it, especially considering the new features. My island looks exponentially more unique and interesting than any of my old villages did. I spend huge chunks of playtime just drinking in how gorgeous the game looks.

I do hate how much furniture ends up exclusive to Pocket Camp, though.

Also let's not forget how amazing your animal friends look in clothes now.
Even though your friends can't wear (non-built in) pants, we've come a long way from "Every shirt/dress turns into a tank or scarf texture". Much like the revamped versions of old objects clothing stands out more than in previous titles.

I can definitely relate to envy of Pocket Camp (especially since I can't play it anymore), but lest we forget:
Pocket Camp has been around for nigh 3.5 years, is handled primarily by a different developer (DeNa), has a lower graphical threshold to meet, and has ways to constantly keep money rolling in (digitally) even after people get the game.

It can have all these nice things 'cuz it can count on a few whales spending exorbitant amounts of Bells to acquire as much stuff as possible.

Why no gyroids??
I for one loved that I finished my fossil catalog without having to worry about those nightmare creatures.

I've never really cared about decorating or the clothes so to me New Horizons is an overall positive. Having villagers tell you who a lost item likely belongs to, and having them give you the option to deliver something the next day when it's late are brilliant and overdue changes.

Brewster, a 24 hour store/Nook Mart and being able to shift the opening times of things with mayor proclamations are definitely things I miss though. I wonder if they are coming eventually but don't understand the need to wait so long.

Having largely run out of things to do on my island, I picked up New Leaf a few days ago to scratch that AC itch.

I don't think I like it very much!

The inventory is a nightmare. You have about 15 slots, 4-5 of which are going to be taken up by tools, which sort themselves back into the grid when you pull them out and put them away again, instead of politely staying where you put them. Nothing stacks except fruit, and even that doesn't do so automatically; you have to go into your pockets every time and manually drag all the fruit together, one at a time, to stack it. Why?

But mostly I'm depressed that after finding a nice spot for my house, the next day I find that some asshole named Beardo had the whole map to choose from but decided to move in exactly two tiles south of me, such that I can barely get out my front door and don't get to have a yard. Go away!

I guess I'll keep plugging away at it and see if my impression improves, but unlike NH which had me instantly hooked, NL is fighting an uphill battle.

New Leaf does have a ton of cool furniture that New Horizons doesn't* going for it, as well as (most) tools being unbreakable, there being an isle where you can play mini games with friends, and ordinances you can use to keep stores open earlier or later and stuff. But revisiting New Leaf after New Horizons certainly does make one far more appreciative of all the Q.O.L. features that have been added since the ol' 3DS game.

To name a few...Additional item slots, more stuff that stacks, storage with way more spaces that's way easier to quickly move stuff in and out of, being able to place objects outside, being able to go Minecraft on your island layout, half-increment item placements, being able to put stuff at the height you want on a wall, flowers you don't have to water all the time or use an ordinance to keep alive, animal friends who actually regularly dress up in different clothes that aren't just custom designs or a thing you delivered, more dynamic animal dress-up (i.e. sleeves), being able to customize your player avatar's physical appearance at will with no nonsense like start-of-game choices locking in your one (AND ONLY ONE) face or haircut questionnaires or having to maintain a tan just to have a different skin color...

Admittedly some of these features first appeared in Happy Home Designer and the gacha, but New Horizons is a much more accessible game in general.

* 'Tis the price to pay for the HD modelling and fancier texturing. New Leaf has loads of stuff 'cuz it carried over the upgraded models of old junk from City Folk while adding new junk of its own and eventually receiving even newer junk from Happy Home Designer.

In contrast New Horizons has stuff with a higher polygon counts and much nicer textures and bit mapping (marble stuff looks marbly, metal looks metally, wallpapers and flooring are far more dynamic, etc.) but since anything from old games that gets in from has to be remade from the ground up there's not quite as much unique furniture.

I love ACNH and I'm happy it keeps getting new stuff added in, but I'd still really like to have some basic things like the cash register at Nook's Cranny.

some asshole named Beardo

How am I supposed to decorate my town?
There are a few things you can have funded to be placed in town. Want a fountain or a single lamppost? Gotta pay for it. And you can't just pick up and move 'em, if you decide you'd rather have that bench one space over you're gonna have to demolish and rebuild it.

Yeah, adding the ability to put dumb shit outside is amazing. There's just so much improvement to the actual game in addition to the graphics I can't imagine going back.

That was such a game changer. I'm surprised it took them so long, as so much stuff is outdoor equipment/furniture, too.

I'm not even sure I'd have had any interest in this one without that change.

I ordered the flower petals and was intrigued that it has a basket icon, I'm glad we finally have baskets to carry around! Please give me the mason jar smoothie everyone else in town seems to have Nintendo.

The Shamrock Soda that was available in March is already basically a reskin of that so maybe we'll see it (and the other awesome holdables) someday.

Be really nice if me and my animal friends could hold this stuff in Photopia too. I was envious of Reese having a bouquet perma-equipped last year and I'm still envious of her this year.
Got this awesome shot with her Yoga animation.
