Y'all Red e For This?: Top 32 & 64-Bit Video Game Nomination Thread

Talking time has listed its Top 50 NES Games, its Top 50 16-Bit Games, and its Top 50 Games of the first 17 years of the 21st Century. There is, however, one era of gaming we have not tackled yet, and it is one of the most important in gaming history. Fortunately, this list will remedy that. So let's find out what TT's Top 50 games of the dawning of 3D gaming are!

1) The Basics
PM me a list of up to 25 games from the 32/64-Bit era. You may use any criteria you wish, but please number them. #1 will get 35 points, 2 will get 34, all the way down to 25 which will get 11. After the deadline passes I will tabulate the points and produce the list. The thread will be up shortly after.

2) The Deadline
The cutoff for receiving lists is 11:59 PM on Wednesday, April 14th.

3) What Counts?
Kirin was nice enough to compile a list of the main systems that qualify:
  • N64
  • PlayStation
  • Saturn
  • Jaguar
  • 3DO
  • PC-FX
  • 32X on a Genesis
  • FM Towns Marty
  • Amiga CD32
  • Apple Pippin
  • Casio Loopy
  • PC and Arcadr Games released between 1996 and 2000 are also eligible. Please use your best judgement when deciding which such games to include. Cnonchobhar has given some good guidelines downthread.
for arcade/PC games, their eligibility should be based on where their console port was (or, failing that, whether it "feels like" a PS1/N64/Saturn game or not) rather than just their release year.
  • Handheld games are not eligible for this list.

If you know of any other systems that qualify and want to nominate a game from that system, please do.

4) Remakes, Ports and Multiplatform Releases
For ports and remakes, a straight port from an older generation (Like Final Fantasy Anthology/Chronicles) would not count, but a full remake like Final Fantasy Origins or the Lunar Complete games would qualify for the list. If a game is multiplatform and there is enough of a difference between the releases, please specify which version of the game you are nominating.

5) Blurbs
If you want to write a little bit about each of your choices, please submit it with your list (or separately, if you want to do it that way, especially if they are on the longer side). If your game makes the list or gets chosen as an honorable mention, I will include your blurb.

That's all I can think of, but if you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask in the thread or through PM. Happy listing!

What years of PC gaming are fair game here?

I remember Positronic Brain nixing PC games for the 16-Bit list, but I wouldn't mind including ones released between 1996 and 2000 if no one else has a problem with it.

Oh okay! List would feel weird without Half-Life in it is all I’m sayin’.

I'm assuming that arcade games from 1996 to 2000 would also suffice Issun?

If we're doing PC then arcade should count, too.

Not sure about the DS. In principle it counts, but does it jibe with the spirit of the list?

Is the point of this to cover the 5th generation of consoles (and PC and arcade games from the same period)?

Yeah, that was kind of what I was going for. I felt that was probably what most people were voting for, too. If you want to vote for a DS game I can't stop you but it would just be a throwaway vote.

Wikipedia does give a longer timeframe for that gen (1993 to 2006) which does overlap with the 4th and 6th gens so I don't know if you want to expand that arcade and PC timeframe or not.

Hmmm, looking at lists, I gotta say some things in the "Arcade '96-'00" category kinda feel like cheating, when they ended up coming to the following gen of home consoles (Dreamcast, PS2, etc)....

What's Shenmue?

At the risk of being a stickler, I'd prefer you actually do explicitly bar DS games (and GBA games for that matter— it's a 32-bit system) from this list. Not so much for how it affects this list, but because I think "Top Handheld Games" could be a list in and of itself, and letting them rank here would lessen the chance of that.

Especially when you consider all that the NAOMI hardware was practically a Dreamcast! I think, for arcade/PC games, their eligibility should be based on where their console port was (or, failing that, whether it "feels like" a PS1/N64/Saturn game or not) rather than just their release year. Otherwise you can get some odd inclusions: for example 1998 saw the release of both Radiant Silvergun (which got a Saturn port) and Soul Calibur (which got a Dreamcast port).

I actually did mean those votes would not be counted. Sorry, should have been more explicit.

Also added your PC/Arcade guidelines in the OP. I think the criteria have been made clear enough now. These lists tend to be pretty self-policing, so the odd vote that bends the rules too much probably won't affect anything too much.

I done did my list back when this was locked in. Looking back, I didn't play all that many games from this era. Mostly it was N64 and only a handful were ones I really liked or even remembered, but the good ones were VERY good.

My gaming time during this period was spent almost exclusively with Playstation JRPGs, so my list is pretty skewed, too.

That's one of the reasons I wanted to do this list. I'm excited to see what other people were playing and expand my horizons a bit. I really hope some Saturn lovers submit lists so we can explore that library.

This gon' be interesting. We'll see if I can put anything together worthwhile. I can already tell you Symphony of the Night will top my list, though.

Haha, I was only putting that out there as a suggestion— I didn't expect it to be canonized. That's a little humbling!

Anyway, I have very little experience with this generation of gaming, so I'm not sure if I'll participate but I'm definitely looking forward to the results.

Putting this list together, I am struck by how dominant a few studios were during this time frame. Also a lot of these games are some of my favorite of all time.

So, I'm... turning to the best judgment of the thread: Do Neo-Geo games from 1995-2000 (which would be ported to PS1, Saturn, et al) count? Or are we counting those games not as "arcade games" from that era and tying them to their generational hardware? (I'm not making a case either way, I just want to know what the agreed upon paradigm is.)

I skipped them myself since the hardware came from the last gen, but if Issun gives the ok I will need to revise my list significantly lol

Man, I knew I went from SNES to Dreamcast, but I hadn't really sat down and realized how many games of this generation I've only played a remake of. Definitely going to keep thinking about it though, and it's made me even more excited to see other people's lists.

Yeah, personally I see Neo Geo as part of the SNES/Genesis generation, but I ain't running this thing, so not my call. :)

I bet arcade games as a whole get dicey depending on the guts of the hardware, which might not have changed much (if at all) despite coming out in the 32/64-bit era.

EDIT: Eh, I take back my previous CPS2 statement. CPS2 saw a ton of ports to Saturn/PSX, and probably deserves to be part of that generation. But then a lot of Neo Geo games saw release on those systems, too, so I DON'T KNOW.

Are you me? Am I you?

Neo Geo games qualified for the 16-Bit thread, so I think we'll keep them there.
They did? I don't remember voting for any of them for that top 50.

But even if Neo Geo games fell under the arcade part of this list my favorites aren't in that year rage.

Yeah, my list will mostly be JRPGs, too. Just that sort of time period.

(And submitted. Something like 60+% RPGs, ha!)
