The SaGa Thread

Famitsu finally dropped some Fuse scenario information for SaGa Frontier Remaster (Coming April 2021). Some bits:
Fuse's scenario is unlocked by completing the game with any of the other protagonists, however, you only unlock the Fuse episode that's about that character. To get the full experience you have to complete the game with all seven other characters.
Fuse's episodes have branches in them depending on the choices you make. To what extent who can say, but it says there are multiple endings.
You can recruit all main characters, but you may have trouble recruiting Emilia on account of Fuse having thrown her in prison.
If you meet certain requirements you can refight the other characters' final bosses, and maybe even super powered versions of their bosses. You know, because the one thing everyone thinks about SaGa final bosses is that they're too easy.

i mean there's some really broken stuff in frontier that you'll probably know at least a little bit about by the time you've finished all 7 stories (and most of it is accessible to most of the characters...i'm assuming he won't be able to get the rings), so while the first couple playthroughs are definitely pretty tough to finish out it's not that hard to stomp things later on with timelord, kitted out robots, etc. not to say there's no chance they'll be wildly overtuned or anything, just that i can certainly see the appeal.

i do wonder if this means some of the devroom stuff will be reallocated to his storyline, though, since that's also got clear requirements and there's a room there where you can fight all the bosses as well.

I know you're being sarcastic, and a rational part of my brain can deal with that. That said, a larger part of me that was completely broken by SaGa Frontier in my youth is screaming, and I don't know how to make it stop. I may have to use a Dream Super Combo here.

i'm gonna be hashtag shook if we find out that they're adding more scenarios for the other characters and not just asellus, even though they've literally only ever mentioned her and fuse as characters with new content

I heard they're cutting a bunch of content from Lute's scenario, though.

This is a joke, I've heard nothing about anything. It's funny only on account of all the content in Lute's scenario there is to cut.

Lute's scenario is literally just "So, here's where the last boss lives, swing by whenever." The ENTIRE game for him is just wandering around undirected, doing whatever non-character-specific stuff you want to do while grinding to what feels like a point where you can take a final boss out.

By which of course I mean hunting humans and trying to get them all DSC.

(Check the whitetext.)

When I LPed Saga Frontier, my solution to Lute's final boss was to use only a second-string party after saccing all of Lute's LP to get the SandVessel and Asura in Facinituru. TimeLeap is a spell only available to whoever practices Time magic (so... TimeLord or whoever kills him) that denies the target their turn if the caster goes first. So TimeLord, with a SuzakuJr in each equipment slot and a Lightsword giving him 88 speed (of max 99), kept the boss locked down. Gen (with Asura) and T260G comboed sword techs, Rouge used ShadowServant/VermillionSand. Only one guy had the DSC. Each phase of the final boss lasted one turn, except the last one, which was super tough. It lasted two.

I saved the Stasis Rune/Overdrive bug for Blue's campaign.

Never playing SaGa Frontier has always been one of my big regrets regarding JRPGs, and hearing about the structure of Lutes campaign is a big part of the reason why.

“The final boss is right there, but maybe try doing some other stuff first” is one of my absolute favourite things in the genre

I legitimately forgot you could do this on the new forums!

Me too sorry for missing the goof. :(

This is a grand SaGa tradition going back to Romancing 1, the option for a "pure experience," no lousy story content to get in the way of your open world RPG simulation freedom simulator.

Make no mistake, this ain't Breath of the Wild. If you take Cap'n Hamilton's invitation to hit the final boss right off you'll be stuck past a point of no return and the endboss will absolutely mop the floor with you. As a passive ability before the first turn, even.

Your only option will be to restart, which will cost you like ten whole minutes.

The other Bad Decision of that magnitude I can think of is Red's campaign, which locks you into Alkaiser for the last dungeon, and Alkaiser never gets any stat growth. If you're underpowered for that last gauntlet rush with the entirety of Black Cross upper management and their mysterious raygun-gothic alien overlord... toooooo bad!

No, wait, Riki's campaign takes the first ally who signed on with your party, and thus the one you've probably made into a cornerstone of your team, out of the group in the cutscene right before the final boss. That's pretty dumb, too.

Hello, I would like SaGa Frontier II, and also the DS Legends remakes to get ports to machines and regions I have access to. Thanks!
I'm still kinda surprised they haven't already released the remakes of SaGa 2 & 3 on mobile.

And man, I really do hope that SaGa Frontier 2 gets a remaster too eventually. I may not have been thrilled by how it focused on a much smaller pool of main protagonists and traded the previous game's mix of sci-fi and fantasy for straight-up medieval stuff, but it was certainly a looker.

I really liked SaGa Frontier 2. I always bounced off the first one (only finished a couple scenarios over the years), but blasted right through the second. Of course, I'm looking forward to fixing my mistake with SF1 when I get the remaster in. :)

did i do all of that?

Is it un-SaGa of me to want nothing more than Final Fantasy Legend IV? Just a simple game with weird stat growth mechanics? I really enjoyed those more than the later games in the series I've played thus far, though I've yet to try Frontier 1 or 2...

Did you ever play the fanmade SaGa 4? It's the hack of Final Fantasy Legend you never knew you wanted.

This is me. I bounced off of SaGa Frontier hard back in the day. I first played it years after its release, so by then it looked antiquated and bad to my teenage eyes that were always lookin' for the next shiny. I played the scenario where the girl gets put in jail and has to break out through a sewers, got stuck in the sewers and couldn't find my way out, and gave up then and there.

But SaGa Frontier II, wowzah. What a game. I like that the narrative is both more and less focused. More in the sense that it has less characters you follow, but less in that things are broken down into chapters that aren't necessarily played out chronologically. As a big history buff, this game tickled my fancy *hard*. Playing the game was like doing historical research in that you're getting these snippets and accounts of people's lives, and as the gamer it's your job to connect the dots and figure out the bigger picture and themes at play. There's really never been anything like it before or since. It's also got some fantastic lore as well to really dig into. Living in a world where nobody really knew how to do metal working, so everyone fights with brittle weapons, and the main character is like the first guy in history to forge a sword of iron. It's really cool stuff.

When you're new to SaGa Frontier, I would definitely not consider Emilia's scenario a good starting point.

T260G would be a better starter, though I would recommend looking a little into how robots work in SaGa Frontier before playing as them 'cuz the first few fights can be pretty rough if you don't know that whatever you equip affects robot base stats.

Completely YMMV, but I played SF with Emilia first, and, while it wasn't an "optimized" run by any means, I felt using her as a starting character was a great choice. Good "base party" there that covers the usual bases with "normal" stat growth. It feels more like a "regular" JRPG you can engage with on those terms while slowly adjusting to the "different" details of SF. I'd recommend T260G or Riki only after experimenting with similar "creatures" in another main character's main game.

I was actually thinking about this pretty hard just last night, and I think the ideal starter is, like, Blue? Seems like the route with the least... trickiness. Some characters seem like good introductions, but have some weird diversions along the way (or during the final boss).

But, again, I'm sure there are "real" answers to this question, and a lot of people have a lot of different reasons for those answers.

(they/them, she/her)
I don't think there is a particularly compelling answer to a "starter" character in Frontier as the fight-or-flight instinct a player may experience towards the game is likely toward its holistic esotericism rather than the structural or mechanical quirks of any one individual scenario. That was really the hurdle to overcome in 1998 from the limited North American console RPG audience perspective, but these days far more players are going to be more receptive to what the game is doing since overall understanding of the genre has deepened and diversified. I'd recommend starting purely on the basis of whoever looks interesting to play as; for me that was Asellus and it wasn't any better or worse of an introduction than the other options.

I've typically suggested Blue as a starting character, because he has a clearly defined goal without any kind of trickiness to his "event flags." As an added bonus, he will also take you to nearly every world in the game as you explore and locate all the different types of magic.

But also, I agree with Peklo that picking your first playthrough based on whoever you like most is probably fine as long as you're open to exploration and experimentation.
