why the heck is this on by default? that should be an opt in, otherwise we're gonna drown in notifications.

You can change the behavior in your preferences. If you're asking why the default default is watch-on-post, that's something we could change, but it would only apply to new users at this point.

Watch-on-post was also the default in the old forums, and it makes sense to be a default. But I think having the default being having email notifications disabled for new users would be a good idea - lets spare the new generations the efrort of having to hunt the option to turn off emails, and I guess it would also help to keep hosting costs down,

We've gone to great efforts to try to eliminate the email notifications by default. Emails cost money, y'know! But we haven't been able to find the setting that governs whether new users will receive emails about watched threads. I had to go into the database to turn them off for all current users just so we'd stop hitting our daily email quota on our previous mail provider.

If you're receiving unwanted emails, there's an unsubscribe link in each thread watch email that will really, truly turn off the emails.

I turned every email right the fuck off, but I still have the same issue as Shivam: I don't want to automatically watch a thread I post in. I'm turning off notifications for "someone posts in watched thread" because it auto-watches every thread I post in, and I hate the way it blows up my notification box at the top. I wish I could actually use the "watch" feature by just watching the threads I want to watch, but I definitely don't want to watch every last thread I post in (and manually un-watching each one every time I post is an annoying hassle) so the whole functionality is basically disabled and useless for me.

I could have sworn that when I first got into the new forum I turned off a preference to auto-watch threads I've posted in, but now I can't find the option anywhere. Although, I don't actually *use* the watch feature so I also have "notify of replies to watched threads" turned off, so it's possible I just hallucinated the other setting. But on the third hand, if I got to "Watched Threads" it says I'm not watching anything (though it also gives the option to show threads I've participated in).

You weren't hallucinating. We hid that setting when we were having problems with too many emails going out. I've restored the setting - is that what you were thinking of?

Ah, yes, that's it. And that should be the setting @shivam and @Paul le Fou want to turn off to make watching threads on purpose more useful. (It's back in Account - Preferences - Content options now.)

Yes! Thanks for restoring it, now we can turn Watching off :p

On that note, are Notifications the same as emails? I actually like the little bell icon on the site itself, and I want to keep on using it, but does the forum notify you both on the site as well as through email? Because if it does, and if I want to keep the bell on, I'm going to auto-direct all forum email to the spam folder.

Your notifications preferences are what you get a little alert in the bell icon for. Turning on "receive email notifications" means you'll additionally get an e-mail for the alerts in question.

I have a bunch of alerts set-up, but I disabled e-mail notifications as soon as the board opened (before the option was hidden) and I've never received an e-mail from the forum.

Likely not for lack of trying, I deleted 30000 errors from failed email attempts once I finally got it working.
