Hey, Talking Time, Whatcha Playin?

Alixsar

The Shogun of Harlem

Mute the voice acting. Maybe put on subtitles. I had to do this for Borderlands 3 and I still didn't finish it.

That's about where I'm at. I've been playing less and less, but I did play the other day...there was an entire sidequest about getting coffee for a character and the writing was SO INSANELY LAZY that I was just like...what the hell...

That said, I did get into a miniboss fight that was really tough and running around shooting guys felt fun as heck. So ah...still a mixed bag, for sure.

Also, Tetris Effect is a game I've played before. I played it at Shivam's in VR and it kinda just hurt my eyes and was hard to tell where the blocks were gonna fall? Well I bought it and played it last night (in the dark with headphones, while wishing I had weed on me) and it's RAD. It's also hard?! Like, I used to think I was good at Tetris, and then I bought Puyo Puyo Tetris and played online and well, that cleared things up real quick. The later stages of Tetris Effect where they turn the speed up to like 13 or 15 are fucking bonkers. The game is pretty forgiving in that you can start over on any portion of a stage and keep going but...it's still pretty rough. Anyway, those early stages were a religious experience though. Good stuff

While 2 is my favorite, the addition of the slide in Mega Man 3 really does make blueboy that much more fun to control. I don't understand why they took it out for 9 and 10.

I'm in Paradise Killer and this game is A Lot. I'm really liking the aesthetics, the investigating, the insane psychic connections to eldritch demon gods (which I somehow did not realize before beginning it), all of that... but good lord the writing is bad. The person who wrote this is not good at writing. They're not even correct at writing most of the time.

Same. My ideal classic Mega Man is "slide but no charge" (Mega Man S, to use Powered Up lingo), but I'd accept the charge shot if I could just have a slide in MM9 (which I love dearly even as-is). And no, super-knockback Proto Man doesn't count.

Anyway, I'm happy to report that Ori and the Will of the Wisps was made for me specifically! I'm not sure about the economic viability of that strategy, but I am grateful! As I was reassured upthread, it addressed my very minor gripes with the previous game, and I'm thoroughly enjoying traversing these stunning environments (and one absolutely terrifying environment) with some of the most delightful mobility I've experienced in a game. I loved getting the original's key abilities so quickly, and was uncertain if new abilities would be able to make as much of an impact. And while I don't think there's anything as game-defining as the bash ability, there are some pretty spectacular new tools that complement the holdovers from the previous game wonderfully. It's also great to be able to use my XP to obtain the specific upgrades that look fun and useful to me, while skipping/saving the less interesting ones for later. This has been an absolutely lovely Christmas present.

The more I play Metal Gear 2 the more I appreciate it for what it is, rather than what it is compared to later entries. Once you actually get how stealth works in 2D you start to enjoy it more. Also making the Hind D my bihotch after the frustration of MGS was very satisfying.

Just beat Grenade Boss. I'm actually looking forward to more for the first time since I started playing.

It took a good five hours to start clicking, but now that I'm in Rapunzel world Kingdom Hearts 3 is really working for me. This game is seriously gorgeous.

And the environments are so big! It almost feels like sacrilege for a Kingdom Hearts to be more than a series of cubes. Combat's starting to come together too, but it's still very much mash X to win. I do expect it to get more demanding as I get further in, but I wonder if I've cheated myself out of my preferred HK experience by selecting Hard instead of Extra Hard. Why can't this children's game be as difficult as a Souls, says I, a man on the internet.

But regardless, it's a wonderful game to exist in and I got a big goofy smile on my face. Hoping the other worlds maintain this energy.

So, I just got out of the month of April in Persona 5 Royal and I'm starting to think that maybe this will be the Persona game that I won't bounce off of. I feel like the Mechanics and the Story are jiving more than previous entries (that I didn't play much of). Like P3 and P4 said you should sneak up and smack shadows in the back so you can act first in combat. P5 says you should sneak up on shadows because you are a thief and are sneakily infiltrating the palace. Or knocking down the enemies so you can recruit them by talking to them instead of it just being a luck based card shell game.

I like how the setup of the game means your character starts out being feared/disliked by most people. Everyone assumes you're a trouble maker because you've got a record. The characters motivations make a lot of sense and it draws me into the world more. I also really like that I have a cat buddy everywhere i go. I like that the dungeons are not just randomly assembled hallways and square rooms. The first palace had interesting rooms, looping paths, light switch puzzles and interesting little traversal puzzles.

So far The Secret of Monkey Island is incredibly well written. It's amazing that goofy adventure games were the first to really nail that, while other genres, even RPGs, took some time to catch up.

Stardew Valley. Taking me a while to get used to the control, but seeing as I don't have to move quickly, its not a big deal. Its very charming so far and its nice to play just a chill game about growing stuff and making friends.

I only finished this game for the first time last year. It really holds up. All the stuff I laughed at when I was 12 was still funny at 35, which doesn't often happen with a video game! I still need to finish playing the sequel(s).

ETA: Was also gonna add that I've been playing Heroes of Hammerwatch online with a couple of friends. It's been a joy. I have a feeling it's gonna keep us pretty busy for a good while.

Pillars of Eternity rules. I may already said this once I don't even know but hey, guess what? IT'S GOOD

So far my favorite part is The cannibals and LeChuck leaving passive-aggressive neighbor notes for each other all over the island.

Mr. Sensible

Pitch and Putt Duffer
After gorging myself on random Dreamcast titles via my new GDEMU, I seem to have settled into alternating sessions of Bangai-O and Rez, both brilliant for very different reasons. Reminds me what a wonderful little blip of a console the DC was.

Playing Origami King, gotten past Rubber Band. On the whole I'm loving it, but the boss battles feel cheap until you know the given trick and even then the RNG drags things out more than necessary it seems.

Playing a mixture of The Legend of Zelda [Switch,] Castlevania 2 [Switch, Castlevania Collection,] and Final Fantasy VI on the Super Nintendo Classic.

In Zelda the Wizrobes of Dungeon 6 are horrendous fiends that sparked very old memories of getting stuck for awhile the same exact way. Castlevania 2 is a delight that has aged far better than I ever suspected - once I recall where to go. And Final Fantasy VI feels like its being played by a totally different person. I'm using Gau, Relm, and all the oddball characters I loathed as a kid. Kinda missing the GBA port's extra features and script but the music makes up for it. Even using the CMD SET - SHORTCUT to speed up my inputs for every last millisecond I can take in battle.

Stardew Valley. Taking me a while to get used to the control, but seeing as I don't have to move quickly, its not a big deal. Its very charming so far and its nice to play just a chill game about growing stuff and making friends.
Keep an eye out for version 1.5 if you aren't already playing it on the PC. The new features are pretty incredibly broad and particularly treat the lategame wonderfully. Console versions should be updated within the month of February. It'll even have splitscreen cooperative play.

I'm realizing Subnautica is everything I love about Souls (immersive, dangerous exploration with a lot of lore expertly woven in) minus everything I hate (walking up the same fucking set of stairs 90 times to die on the same boss encounter). It might be my new favorite game, and I mean ever.

This might have just convinced me to play Subnautica, and I don't even mind boss runbacks.

Cool! Just be forewarned that there's a lot of crafting and inventory management, in case that's not your thing. (It's usually not mine, but the larger experience is so great that I managed to adapt.)

I always forget how short and sweet Super Mario Bros. 3's levels are. Not that I don't love the more intricate levels of other Mario games, but the bite-sizedness of 3 is definitely a great thing.

Hey! The Switch port of One Step From Eden, the excellent Mega Man Battle Network-em-up, finally got its Easy Mode update.

My (and most peoples) only complaint with the game was its staggeringly enormous difficulty curve, so I am very excited to see if I can actually get close to winning a run for once!
