I did it (barring potential DLC)

Congrats again Val! I loved watching it.

jeez. i didn't even know that much time had passed between the game coming out and now.

The game is real good! What can I say?

Basically, is the easiest setting simple enough for two girls with limited gaming experience who just want to breeze through the story because they love the characters?
They are very different games, so they may not enjoy the flow of a musuo, but I imagine if they’re capable of playing BotW they could handle this game. BotW is a lot more difficult, imo

Question for folks, how easy is the game's easy setting?

Y'see, I got a couple of cousins, Age 9 and 11, who got a Switch way back when the 'rona started and got Breath of the Wild with it. This was their first video game system ever and thus their video gaming experience in general is low, but they really REALLY got into it and now have been looking forward to this game because it's a prequel, but I'm getting the sense that they think it will be another game in the vein of Breath of the Wild, and trying to explain its roots from the Dynasty Warriors franchise (which they've never heard of nor care about) is likely to be futile.

I haven't tried easy mode, but the only thing I can think of potentially being a problem is getting used to all the button combos, especially the Slate usage. But like Sprite said they played Breath of the Wild I can't imaging this being tougher.

You run around doing elaborate combos that you'll never TRULY figure out beyond "Okay if I mash Y until I see him pause then it's time to Mash X"
Honest question: do you like any other Musou games?

I will say, just because I feel that people should be warned alongside the glowing reviews from here, the framerate is absolutely dreadful but does get better after the first level somewhat, which is at the level of genuinely shocking that it's in a released game.

Phantoon

I cuss you bad
Yeah, it's not the game to get if you're expecting Devil May Cry. It's more of a Final Fight. Which is very fine by me.

Well, I hit 100% completion today at minutes shy of 70 hours.

My first thought was... "Well, now what do I do?"

My second thought was - is this the first time I've ever fully cleared a Musou?

My third thought was - I don't think I can go back and play HW1 anymore. I'd miss too much of what made the combat in this game awesome. Probably. I'll still try.

I finished the post-game sidequests to (major spoilers) rebuild Terrako and at about 85% completion, I think I'm ready to call it good and move on. It's a really great game.

I initially didn't agree with the choice to have this be an alternate timeline since I felt like it might devalue the events of BotW, but now I would argue that it was the right decision, if only because of how this game does justice to the franchise's title character. This game does Princess Zelda better than any other game in the franchise and seeing her take such a prominent role in the story was worth however contrived it may have been to have a time-traveling Guardian alter history.

To respond to BEAT, the real cowardice is that this franchise has existed for nearly 35 years and has, with very few exceptions, refused to use Zelda as anything more than a damsel in distress to rescue from Ganon. BotW had a bit better framing on this- instead of being outright kidnapped by Ganon, Zelda willingly went to Ganon to keep him at bay until Link could return, but ultimately it has the same core objective as most other Zelda games- rescue the princess. If AoC was a true prequel to BotW and stayed faithful to those events, it would just be playing into story concepts Nintendo should have rightly moved beyond decades ago. Am I really supposed to believe that there is bravery to continuing this trend? That it is cowardice to move away from antiquated tropes? Maybe a time-traveling robot that allows you to rewrite history is a contrived way to avoid the bad gender politics that have plagued the franchise for so long, but it's still an improvement in my opinion.

I dunn got this for Squishmas!

I’ve unlocked four characters so far, and half of them are Weird! I’ve kind of got a grip on how Impa is supposed to work; Impa can tag enemies with her special, and when she beats them, she temporarily gets Extra Impas like Gradius Options, but I’m still kind of confused on Zelda; she can make her attacks explode instead of sticking around, but I’m not sure if that’s just for combos or Slate magic or what.

In comparison, Mipha is basically Ruto, except she can heal, too and Link is largely unchanged except he gets more jumping attacks.

Do I have that right?

For Zelda: It's just the combos that explode, specifically the objects that remain after using them (i.e. the bombs and ice blocks). The slate magic that you activate by holding R is not affected.

100% agree. I remember this shred of hope way back when they released the first BotW stuff that had a very feminine-looking Link; I really, really thought it might actually be Zelda and was so crushed to learn it was the same as every other game in this aspect.

Looking back on it, while Age of Calamity is overall the better game, there was one thing in particular that the original Hyrule Warriors did much better, and that was to have more strategic elements in its level design. Age of Calamity has much more fun and interesting fights against enemy officers and boss monsters, but virtually no mission has any element of territory control. This deep in the game, to continue to see every challenge be some variation on "go here and kill this monster" is giving me a sense of the bad kind of monotony, whereas most of what it brings is the good kind of monotony. Levels where the enemy army is a threat to the allied army are all this game lacks.

I lost one of the small side missions last night because the allied base fell while I was fighting the boss. I've been playing this for a while now (characters in the low 30s level-wise) and didn't even realize that was a thing in this game. I have almost certainly seen some "enemies have reached the allied base" messages over the hours, but my brain almost just processed that as flavor text for all the impact it had on the actual gameplay. I was assuming maybe this was something I'd have to start paying more attention to as I moved forward, but perhaps not.

While you can indeed lose because a critical outpost falls, the pressure to capture keeps is almost non-existent, especially compared to HW, I agree. The Adventure mode battle maps this was at least mildly important even on missions that didn't mandate you to capture because keeps would send out raiding parties to take over enemies keeps and unattended this would result in losses for your forces. As far as I can tell, unless the mission mandates capturing a keep to proceed or unlock a door, there's literally no pro or con to capturing them or just walking through them.

I will admit I noticed this and it bugged me some.

I'm wrapping up the 100% -- just grinding out the last korok seeds -- and I think my most-desired feature would be a way to automate buying items from the shops? Cuz I burned through a lot of eggs and rock salt (among others) for cooking, and every time I ran low I had to remember to grab more after every mission until I had a good stock again. At least let me jump from the cooking menu to the right shop if the ingredient I'm out of is available.
Second most-desired feature would be a way to get those spit-happy lizalfos to FUCK OFF I'M FIGHTING A LYNEL STOP SHOCKING ME FROM ACROSS THE ROOM.

Also, I agree it's weird that the only reason to capture keeps (assuming that's not the stated objective) is to get the extra chests that drop.

In my experience watching Val, I find your special attack (A button) was best used to clear out rooms of trash as much as making the weak point appear on a mini boss/boss monster.

Oh absolutely, but there's a lot of challenges that don't provide enough fodder to charge up your special gauge (unless you're Impa maybe)

Honestly, not that sorry to see capturing Keeps to lose its focus; darn things got hard to manage on more frantic maps and restoring them always felt like they were more trouble than they were worth

One thing that might help is marking the ingredient in question as a Sheikah Sensor target.

True! And that was a great help when I needed an ingredient from one of the wandering traders. It didn't help anywhere near as much when I needed to stock up on Rock Salt and Cane Sugar, from the same two stores every time, only able to buy 7 of each at a time (oh, that's another way they could've alleviated it: increase stock counts, either outright or as quest rewards).

This isn't entirely true -
Zelda's slate magic is also activated the same way. Her Bomb bot will explode earlier (and harder), Her Stasis will end early but inflict a lot of damage, Her Cryosis icicles will detonate, and you can launch her Magnesis like a railgun (the later is important since if you load her Magnesis with a crate from her Y attack, it will instantly cause a weak point gauge).

Also - both her Slate runes AND her regular attacks are affected by food and equipment that boosts slate runes.

That Zelda is a beast if you use her right.

On the subject of Zelda, was it just my imagination or do her R-button slate moves recharge faster than other characters'?

They do. You're absolutely supposed to utilize her R-button moves more than other characters (if her short combo strings weren't already an indication).

I'm taking my time to go through this game! I really love how constantly Revali just straight up says everyone is an idiot. Impa and the small guardian just had a slap flight and he flew away in disgust and I 100% agree with his decision.

Oops my Zelda amiibo gave me the Bow of Light, and when I went to equip it the description said it was for her to use after awakening to her power.

She... hasn't?

So I am having a blast using a weapon I'm clearly not supposed to have yet.

There was a warning against that happening earlier in this thread. I saw that warning, thought "hell yeah, extra/early weapon! I love cheating!"... and my Zelda amiibo only ever gave me ipad parts. Le sigh. And the heck of it? When I finally got that other weapon? I loved it so much more than the original weapon. You robbed me, random number generator!
