I know Alan Scott from the JSA, where he was part of the old guard. But he wasn't the fatherly one, that was Jay Garrick Flash; the wasn't the stern one, that was Hawkman; he wasn't the one who still thought he was young, that was Wildcat; he was the other one.

I guess Alan Scott did have a daughter that had/was a Green Lantern ring. Maybe Jade will be part of the show.

Is the New 52 Alan different from the original one, at least in personality, powerset and ring origins? All I know about the former is that he's actually from Earth-2, he was gay, and possibly was killed.

The answer to any question about New 52 Earth-2 is ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Pretty much. Earth 2 used to be my favorite N52 book until uh, about two years into it when they decided to just light everything on fire.

So N52 Earth 2:

Alan Scott is like a gay Tony Stark, who should have died in a train accident but was protected by the ring that chose him. The Green (same Green that powers Swamp Thing) decided that it needed to protect Earth and made Scott their hero. Which was very important when in Earth 2, the Old Gods, Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman have all died leaving the planet defenseless. So he was very much positioned to be the central figure of this new not!JSA book. But his lover died in that accident though because the ring only protected Scott, so he's full of RAGE! And thus because he's so angry and is new at this, he isn't super great at doing his job. At some point I'm pretty sure he fuckin' died, but got resurrected because The Green still needed the planet to be defended and he's basically Earth 2's Swamp Thing, not a Green Lantern. But! Then Darkseid launched Apokolips at Earth 2, and it ate Earth 2, and Earth 2 died. And with it, Scott lost his power because it was fueled by The Green and thus The Earth and thus no more more Earth 2 means no more power. But eventually a small group of survivors (think Asgard refugees on the space ship) crashes on a new planet and that's the new Earth 2, found because Scott used the last of his powers to find it. And at some point, Scott links up with The Green on this new Earth, so he's back to being Green Lantern, but he's still really sad and detached from humanity b/c his lover died and Earth died and all the other heroes are assholes, etc. So he just keeps to himself while Power Girl fights Valzod for some stupid fuckin' reason and that's about where I gave up on Earth 2.

I'm probably wrong about a few details because it's been a while, but that's the general gist of it. If they wanna keep Alan Scott gay, awesome, I really don't care. But I hope N52 Earth 2 gets memory hole'd hard and nothing else about it makes its way into this new show, because holy shit what a garbage fire.

In the movie "Man of Steel," during the various fight scenes, Clark's opponents hit him with a bullet, a locomotive, and a tall building.

There were bits where they basically portrayed Alan Scott as a guy who had spent his "fathering days" on the job (as a Green Lantern), and was now kind of trying to make right with his estranged children (and the general next generation). Granted, the official origins were a lot more complicated (like a supervillainess hid his children to begin with), but that was basically the jist of it. I'd be down with something like that kind of portrayal: a dude who is trying to be a good mentor to the GL Corps because he missed out on raising his own kids, and said own kids occasionally show up to be equal parts helpful and awkward. Bonus points if they go all in on "yeah, I've been a GL for decades. Yes, my daughter has green skin. No, I don't think that happens to everybody."

Just please don't make Obsidian the "secret" gay villain that is revealed to be the son of one of the main cast again...

Wasn't that the expectation? He played Damaged Joker in Suicide Squad, after all.

Well shit, now my girlfriend's definitely gonna want to watch this (she really likes Leto's Joker for some reason). Which probably means I'll rewatch MoS and BvS too...

If you weren't a fan of BvS before, and never watched the Ultimate Edition, consider watching that on your rewatch. It doesn't fix any fundamental tonal issues a lot of detractors have with Snyder's movies, but the plot/character motivations are a lot more coherent, and things in general are given more time to breathe in that director's cut.

Yeah, in the Ultimate Edition Luthor's plot actually makes sense. Its not quite clockwork perfect like Knives Out or something, but it actually shows all of the pieces and how they fit together. The whole thing is simply more coherent.

Definitely, definitely watch the ultimate cut. The 30 additional minutes of footage is so necessary.

Vaccine's so close, too. I guess they're maybe trying to keep theaters on life support and... what... get HBO Max on Roku. I wish them all the best in these endeavors.

I watched Wonder Woman '84 today and ended up liking it a lot, surprisingly. It tries to hit a much more impactful emotional core compared to the first movie, and I feel it's a very YMMV attempt there, but for me it absolutely worked and hit me right in the feels. Maybe it's because my expectations weren't really that high or anything specific to begin with. It's also amusing they didn't even try to situate it within the larger DCEU films (wasn't Superman in Man of Steel supposed to be the first reveal of an actual superhero to mankind???). Oh and the cameo from Lynda Carter was pretty cute and well executed.

Also watched the movie and thought the same things as you Yangus. Only difference is that I had expectations going in and it mostly met or exceeded them. I was expecting something more metal, but the emotional resonance of the film instead melted me like butter in a frying pan. It's definitely gonna be ymmv, and all the Usual Suspects on the internet are gonna get triggered real hard by the movie, but I loved it. I thought it had a lot of great messaging and an emotional and ethical core that you very rarely see outside of stuff like, Star Trek or the good Pixar movies.

I didn't see it this way. It's definitely completely independent with zero links to anything else that I could readily spot. (Outside of
Bialya, ofc.) But it also maintains plausible deniability and easy integration back into a larger unified world if they want it. WW knocks out cameras wherever she went, kept telling people "this is our secret" when she saved people, and the news never got a good look at her and treated her like a rumor the entire time. All of her early antics in the film like at the White House, she was significantly powered down as well, so it's not going to set off a defcon alert the same way as an invincible Superman waltzing in.

Also, I really appreciate how the film realigns and corrects the entire WW/Maxwell Lord dynamic, and manages to redeem that stupid effing storyline from 15 years ago. That felt like a really Geoff Johns move.

Watching Wonder Woman 84 made me feel like it was harkening back to earlier DC comic movies, like Batman and Batman Returns: Yes, it's at times not going to be logically sound and there's definitely gonna be cheesy moments, but everything's done out of good clean fun that it's hard not to help but enjoy the movie for what it is. It helps that, despite not many action scenes, there is thematic cohesion.

Pedro Pascal was great. Good to see Mando go places in galaxies other than far far away, (but still a long time ago).

Here's the future of DC movies and TV. In short: 4 theatrical movies a year, 2 movies a year on HBO Max, with plenty of spinoff TV shows to accompany them. Also, two different Batmans running at the same time: Robert Pattinson is a separate Batman series from the established DCEU so far.
