Help Me Play Commodore 64 Games

I wouldn't mind some advice myself, I've bounced off most of the ones I've tried. I know Impossible Mission is very well thought of, and Mayhem In Monsterland is a technical marvel.

Most of the games I played on C64 were probably better experienced on other systems, but I have fond memories of Bubble Bobble, Giana Sisters (or rather, a hacked version that puts Mario into the obvious Mario clone), and a mini golf game whose name I can’t remember so that’s not much help. Impossible Mission is good.

Defender of the Crown is pretty good, though I can never get anywhere in it. Wizball is pretty quirky but I think actually pretty good and a C64 original. You play a wizard in a bouncing ball trying to collect colours because the world has gone black and white, if I remember right. I think you can get your cat in a ball as an option.

I can get back to you all with a list :) .What info for the games do you need? Genre and a short reason why, I guess...

EDIT: I also don't know how good the Archive emulator is. I played all of them on WinVICE, but that was years ago...

I recommend trying out M.U.L.E. One of my favorites of all time. The Bard's Tale series is a tough but intriguing trilogy of WRPGs that I puzzled around with a lot, along with Pool of Radiance. The Last Ninja is a very atmospheric isometric action game with a killer soundtrack. And I personally adored Way of the Exploding Fist as an early one on one fighter in the vein of Karate Champ.

One more: Jumpman is a super cool arcade platformer.

I played Way Of The Exploding Fist on my ZX Spectrum! In the dark days before Street Fighter II it was great stuff.

Well, for now this is some post I agree with 100%.

So, some things first...
- I am C64 nostalgic
- I also play C64 games just for the music :)
- I played all of these on an emulator, using save states and turbo mode where applicable ;-)
- I have played these games in my youth (early 1990s) AND a few years ago (you can still find the lists on old Talking Time)

Here's my partial list, sorted by year:
- Frogger (I like the C64 port)
- Choplifter (I like the rescue and shoot concept)
- Evolution (Minigame collection, possibly just nostalgia)
- Fast Eddie (single screen platformer with collecting, quick and clean concept)
- Miner 2049er (relatively hard single screen platformer)
- Archon 1+2 (Multiplayer enabled action based chess like games)
- Aztec Challenge (A little bit like Dragons Lair but with arrows and blood sacrifice)
- Bandits (neat little single screen shmup)
- BCs Quest for Tires (platformer, runner type game)
- Beach Head (shoot the evil soldiers)
- Blagger (like Miner 2049er, also good)
- Dino Eggs (collect stuff and don't get caught under the giant dinosaur feet)
- Forbidden Forest (horror shooter, boss rush could describe this, awesome music)
- Frantic Freddie (Apart from the good music, standard single screen platformer stuff, but not that hard)
- Gateway to Apshai (roguelike dungeon action RPG)

I added that many games because Issun didn't post his preferences yet...I like each and every one of those games :)

You know, I have many many more to suggest, but I'll just wait until you report back with your impressions ^^.

I recall the moon patrol port being pretty good.

I played a lot of The Pawn, which was a decent early text adventure. There is a key in the well, there got you started.

We had a game called Jumpman that didn't have anything to do with Donkey Kong other than being a single screen platformer. You were a stick figure and ran around grabbing glowing bits. You did a cool somersault when you jumped and you tumbled all the way to the bottom of the screen and it played Taps if you died.

Conan (as in "the barbarian") was really cool with killer music.

You don't have to hack it. Put a USB with your games in it into the mini. That's it. Don't know how good the lag is though.

Most accounts of the device I'd seen suggested it was pretty good, but the keyboard is fully decorative so you might need a USB hub in order to run games off a drive and also use a keyboard. People are working on FPGA-based recreations but who knows when those will actually make it to market. It is otherwise a pretty simple operation, put your games on the drive, plug in the drive, and access them from the menu.

iirc they were about to release a functioning C64 repro after the Mini but I don't know if they got around to doing so...

They did. Might be Europe only though.

Should go without saying that MiSTer has an FPGA core for it.

So who'd be interested in some Discord streaming/watching of some C64 games to demonstrate the breadth of this system? (Of course the timezone difference could be a hindrance ;-) )

i thought this was the C64 Mini thread. Alas.

Get Godzilla, if you can find it.

Archon is still amazing, and the computer doesn't cheat so the game is fair. Archon II is fun too but suffers the weight of Too Many Systems.

Also, the C64 had amazing couch multiplayer games, if that's your jam, Summer Games, Winter Games, G.I. Joe, Spy vs Spy...

The C64 Mini is welcome discussion here!

I also like all of Epyx's "word" Games. Summer Games II, Winter Games, World Games and California Games are all good fun once you figure out how to play them.

There are a lot of very good suggestions on here. A few more I would throw in are:
Crossroads: An absolutely chaotic shooter that is somehow both the most hectic thing I've seen on the hardware (until the sequel) and a magazine type-in game
Alice in Wonderland: A delightful side-scrolling adventure platformer
Below the Root: By the same developers as Alice in Wonderland. The amount of detail that went into it is absolutely bonkers. The wiki can describe it better than I possibly could
Laser Squad: The first game by Julian Gollop of X-Com/UFO fame. Obviously not as good as its successors but still incredibly interesting.
Sword of Fargoal: A very early graphical roguelike that is still pretty playable.

My cousins from Pennsylvania had Below the Root when I visited back there almost 25 years ago.It was pretty cool!

So many suggestions. I'll have to winnow through them and find out which ones are on Digital Archives.

I would watch this. I love watching people talking about 8-bit micros from people that actually played them as a formative experience.
