Like did you seriously think I'd forgive them not ending on a Grim total party kill because they gave hand-wrapped gifts to the shippers?

I'm fucking allergic to shipping come on you all know this.
Sounds like you might be the coward.

Ending in a manner consistent with Breath of the Wild canon means releasing a game with every character's development unfinished. Even on that basis alone, they made the right call.

If we're framing creative decisions on a scale of "cowardice" then I should think sticking entirely to the narrative precedent established and explored by one of the most popular games of all time would've been the more cowardly act. Deviating from it undoes that burden of expectation and does for the storytelling what the source material could not.

Sounds like the game was sold under a false pretense to me, but I'd have to go back and re-read what was said for their precise wording, but I can't be arsed.

I don't know about cowardice, but it is extremely rude of AoC to passive-aggressively pop up the "btw, this is the button you press to dodge" prompt when I take a hit 20 hours into the game

(The above is a joke. I'm actually enjoying this game a lot.)

I’m just gonna say that it’s hardly “false pretence” when the event occurs in the very first cutscene which is available for free via the demo.

Also this is an amazing fan comic that you shouldn’t read if you haven’t gotten past Chapter 5 or have literally zero shits regarding spoilers. It puts into words the reason why said spoilers feel right.

Eeeeeh...

The game felt like it was being pitched to us as a prequel to BotW, but then it creates a separate timeline in which BotW doesn't seem to occur, and so therefore cannot actually take place before an event that doesn't happen.

Again, though, I would need to review their wording versus what everyone made of it.

Makes me wonder what the BotW sequel takes place after now...

Breath of the Wild because Hyrule is in a ruined state still, and that means it’s 100 years later.

So here's my take after sinking in hours and hours over the holiday weekend:

I would agree that the marketing for the game and the storyline of the content itself are at odds. Anyone who bought it on the premise of playing through a tragedy is going to be disappointed. That said, as Gaer pointed out, the game points this out very quickly.

I, personally, don't care about that. The game is fun as all get out. All the characters are fun to control once I got the hang of them and there's a good balance to the missions/rewards. And other than the basic premise,
Zelda builds robot at 6 that can time travel, has most advanced Sheikah tech, and becomes Chemical X letting Purah do whatever the fork she wants with existing tech
being a little bananas, I still enjoyed the story.

Also, I can't even fathom thinking BotW2 takes this into account. That was likely in development long before this alternate universe was even conceived.

The game itself is very clear about what it is from the very first scene.

The marketing, though, is a pack of lies. The first trailer starts with “It’s time you find out what happened 100 years ago.” The page for the game on Nintendo’s website uses similar wording, saying it’s the “only way” to see what happened.

I’m glad I spoiled myself on it, because I would have been pissed otherwise. As it is I’m just kind of bored. I am gritting my teeth at my husband’s excited anticipation of what isn’t actually coming, and trying to talk down some of my friends who don’t know what a musuo is by telling them they shouldn’t buy it for the story, but the fun hack and slash. If you’ve played a musuo you know to expect fanfic. A lot of people haven’t, and I think it’s reasonable for them to be disappointed.

Nintendo absolutely whipped people up on this game using false premises. That’s not the game’s fault, per se, as it sets up an alternate timeline in the first scene. But the trailers and ad copy for the game that I’ve seen don’t mention time travel at all, and characterize it as a serious retelling of a tragedy.

I think I'm starting to get the hang of Daruk. I don't mean the nuances of doing sick jumps off of magma ramps. Rather, it's this: I don't think there's a single attack in the whole game that can even make you flinch if you block it with Daruk's Protection, and most enemies expose their weak point gauges for a little bit after their attacks even if you don't dodge at all.
I found one attack that WILL break through Daruk's Protection: the Lynel's AOE slam attack that has the big red zone indicator. I was redoing Innkeeper's Request and the one at the end hit me through the shield.

Pretty much this, though I must contest the first part.

It's not immediately clear at the outset that they've created a separate timeline, unless I'm forgetting something. While we saw the little guy go back in time, it could have been a form of predestination paradox for all we knew.

On the other hand, I suppose Ocarina shows that time travel doesn't work that way in Zelda, so the same rules would apply here.

Daruk is interesting. I think Daruk's Protection actually makes it easier to fish for perfect dodges and flurry attacks. Because he doesn't flinch from hits at all during a guard, you can dodge out of it right in the middle of enemy attacks.

Just started Chapter 5, having done nearly everything available before that and I'm still about 40% done unlocking the HW1 Link outfit.

I finished the story before the weekend. I enjoyed it. Is it spoiler with a Musou to say I'm not nearly done? So much post-game.

I mean, weak, strong, up in the air, weak, weak, weak, arrow volley will stagger anything with a head weakpoint and almost always end up with a dead moblin.
Yeah, uh, wow, this is super broken. Does any other character have something nearly as reliable to force out the weak gauge? Because otherwise it seems sub-optimal to play with anyone but Link.

I mean, not that playing optimally matters 90% of the time in a musuo, but still.

Several characters have combos available late in the game that will open up a weak point gauge, but I haven't committed any of them to muscle memory yet. I'll report back.

Yes, having played more of the post-game and spread around the characters more... Yeah Link's still kinda OP but not as bad as it first seemed. the C6 attacks for most characters will hit the weak point when you unlock that combo for them. And I've just had more fun mixing it up as there are in fact more forced character choices in the post-game. Also, learned Impa properly and holy shirt. On top of which I got a super lucky early high damage weapon drop for her; she's got a lvl 20 weapon now that does like 120 damage or something. I'm in the roughly 65-70 lvl range with my cast at the moment.

Good to know! It’s normal to have one or two characters stand above the rest but this seemed ridiculous.

Link's gotta be powerful so you'll play him because otherwise why would you ever bother compared to all the much more interesting characters available

He's also the only character who can run around in his underwear, which is an important factor in any decision I make.

...

STILL HERE? ALRIGHT RAD LET'S GET INTO THIS SHIT.

The Video Game.

It's exactly what I expected it to be. You run around doing elaborate combos that you'll never TRULY figure out beyond "Okay if I mash Y until I see him pause then it's time to Mash X" Some character like Link and Mipha are easy to understand and deal decent damage. Some characters like Impa and Daruk are KINDA a pain in the ass to figure out but you can fake it if you figure out the obvious cheese. And finally some characters like Zelda are a frustrating mess that kill all gameplay momentum. For her character-specific challenges I just unloaded rupees into her at the training grounds until she was massively overleveled so I could just unthinkingly and unknowingly mash my way through. IT JUST WORKS.

The maps are largely lifted directly from BOTW, then hammered into the Muso Format with Enemy/ally spawning keeps and clear start/end points for most levels. This means the levels feel like they have a lot more variety than the ones in OG hyrule warriors, (Which were largely just series of boxes connected by intentionally confusing pathways), but its definitely a case of square peg being hammered into round hole, and as a result a lot of the maps have tons of unused spaces, dead ends, ect. Two steps forward, one step back.

It's also laggy as fuck. I generally don't care about 60FPS vs 30FPS, but these drops are literally impossible not to notice. It chokes up something fierce on the big flashy attacks or whenever there's too many trash mobs onscreen, but nothing makes the game suffer quite like Impa. Her special ability is creating shadow clones, all of whom attack via particle effect speedline slashes, When you max out with 6 clones, just hitting the attack button can drop the framerate down to like 4FPS.

Also, whenever you're fighting more than 1 giant monster, or exactly 1 giant monster but in a small area, the camera will flip the fuck out and die in agony. Combined with the framerate issues, this results in long periods of time to appreciate single frames of INDECIPHERABLE NONSENSE. You will get into situations where you're staring at a slideshow of nothing but chunks of obstinate level geometry, the back half of a malice Lynel, and a particle effect and it will cause to to lose and die.

In other words, it's a muso. Not a bad one! And honestly the MUSONESS of it all pissed me off way less than OG Hyrule Warriors, which was much more obnoxious about shit like "YOU JUST LOST BECAUSE THE KEEP FELL TO A SINGLE MOBLIN STANDING STILL IN IT". That's a step in the right direction, as far as I'm concerned.

But you're not here to listen to me talk about that shit. You're here to hear me bitch and moan about everything else. Well that will have to wait until PART 2!!! That's right! This game has me thinking so many THOUGHTS that I'm going to have to do MULTIPLE EFFORTPOSTS! It's like Iron fist all over again!

TO BE CONTINUED!!!

Question for folks, how easy is the game's easy setting?

Y'see, I got a couple of cousins, Age 9 and 11, who got a Switch way back when the 'rona started and got Breath of the Wild with it. This was their first video game system ever and thus their video gaming experience in general is low, but they really REALLY got into it and now have been looking forward to this game because it's a prequel, but I'm getting the sense that they think it will be another game in the vein of Breath of the Wild, and trying to explain its roots from the Dynasty Warriors franchise (which they've never heard of nor care about) is likely to be futile.

Basically, is the easiest setting simple enough for two girls with limited gaming experience who just want to breeze through the story because they love the characters?

@SpoonyBard The story missions do a good job of establishing a decent progression while setting up the setpieces (introduction of new bosses like Hinoxes and Taluses) so that there's not usually a lot of pressure (I can only think of one story mission that has a hard timer and it's generous, several others have soft timers) or precise tactics needed (up until Lynels, anyway...)

I can't speak to the Easy mode as I haven't really tried it, I'll try to test out some easy mode levels on a fresh save file today and let you know what I think about it specifically

@shivam I imported my demo save so that adds to the time
