paimon is quite possibly named after a demon from the ars goetia and really obviously is only pretending to be a fucking idiot (though doing a good job at it)

I am now fully convinced that should they exist that hell looks exactly like heaven except one of these things is constantly escorting you around. They did a good job indeed.

It's your fault for using English voice acting, cry some more. Think on your sins. I'm also into the absolute negative amount of fucks the localizers give sometimes. Most of the dialogue is straight, but then every so often it gets completely bananas. I wish they'd lean into that wacky tone more honestly.

Good job on the Jean/Sucrose pull. I'm rank 23 and threw 20 bucks at the game and have done as many free pulls as I can and still don't a single five star weapon or character. Then I see shit like this

Clearly, there is no God.

It's fine, I've gotten one dupe of Kaeya, two of Barbara, and FOUR of Fischl, so they've all got some constellation bonuses. I've been using Noelle a lot too once I started moving into harder areas and leveled the world up. There's still some characters I'd rather have (Razor, Diluc, Mona, Qiqi, etc.) but...whatever it's fine. I'm also impressed that on top of a monthly pass and gatcha pulls, this game has a BATTLE PASS too. Like...Jesus, guys.

Anyway this game is still really fun. It's BotW but with gatcha/MMO gatekeeping and grinding, more/better combat, and a constant but slow drip feed of gear and items. It was basically made in a lab to get me addicted to. I'm curious what the future of this game will be though...people are already complaining (understandably) about the gatekeeping of the resin economy, and I'm curious how many people are gonna stick with it after a month or so...

I started playing this today. Got to Adventure Rank 8 and finished the first set of prologue quests before stopping. Did my 2 draws and got a bunch of weapons plus the free Noelle. It looks like I'll get another pull's worth at AR10 from their gifts? Otherwise... how do you even gain gacha currency? I keep getting those crystal things from doing everything but you don't spend those on pulls? What is that about?

You can trade those in for both of the pull currencies. I think you can buy other things with them, but using them for pulls is supposed to be the optimal use of them I think.

If you try to pull without having the specific currency for it, the game will ask you if you'd like to use Primogems instead and will automatically trade them in for the conversion rate.

English voice acting aside, uh, this is my kinda goofy shit

So I did some math to determine how long it would take to save up enough for 90 pulls to pity a 5* character. If you pay for the $5 monthly thing and do all of your dailies, you get exactly 30 pulls every 30 days. So it would take 90 days and $15 to save for 90 pulls (outside of other primogem income). If you don't pay for the monthly thing, then it drastically increases how much time it takes to save up 90 pulls -- 240 days. Again, this is without accounting for other primogem income, or the premium battle pass which includes more gems and also Fate currency.

Like.

Some F2P games let you buy what you want from a store with gems or whatever. Some with a fixed stock, others with a rotating stock.

Some F2P games have a subscription service of some sort that will seem like a better deal than the other stuff if you're an active player.

Many F2P games have gachas of some sort where you spend gems or whatever to try and win the prize you want.

Most F2P games have a combination of these things. The more ways to part man from money, the better for them.

If you want to play an F2P game, don't try to be a completionist. That path only leads to rage, sorrow, and bankruptcy.

I'm interested to see your math.
My understanding is that daily, with the sub card, you can get 150 primogems a day. 10x4 commissions, 20 commission set bonus, 90 card.
That's not *quite* a pull. In 30 days, you have 4500 gems, which will get you 28 pulls with 20 gems left over.

You also get 300 of those other crystal things from buying the monthly card, which are 1:1 to turn into primogems. So you're effectively getting 100 gems per day from it. (Why does this game have a secondary currency you can buy for real money and then turn THAT into primogems which you then THOSE into the fate currency for actually pulling on something?)

1) to obfuscate things more
2) So you can get one Fate as a quest reward or giveaway, and have it limit what you can spend it on.
3) Conversely, so you can get Primogems as a reward or giveaway and have it feel "more valuable" since you can spend it on anything.

Genshin has all of this; spending "gems" on "fates" gives you "Wishes" aka an item or character. But getting wishes gives you one of two currencies (starglitter and like...master glitter or something), and you can spend glitter on various things. But certain rarities gives you certain glitter and the items for sale with each are not the same. Some have a limited stock and others don't. For instance, this month you can buy Razor with glitter, but it's the glitter that you get when you get 4 or 5 star rarities only.

This game DOES have rarity "protection" though; every 10 wishes you are GUARANTEED a 4 star weapon or character, and every 90 wishes you are guaranteed a 5 star.

It also has a monthly subscription; 5 bucks gets you 300 crystals upfront (which is the real money currency that is exchanged at a 1:1 ratio with gems and exists solely to confuse things) and a daily allotement of 90 crystals.

It also has a Battle Pass, which has you completing daily and monthly objectives to level, which gives you stuff. There's multiple levels and a 10 dollar fee to access the "better" rewards, and a 20 dollar version that gives you a bunch of free levels (you can also just buy levels outright like other Battle Passes).

There's ALSO an ingame currency called Resin that regenerates over time, but is required to do some of the endgame activity. You can get "Fragile Resin" from leveling up which restores 60, but you're capped at 120 so even if you take a few days off you can still only do a few things before you run out (most activites cost 20 or 40). You need the things you get to ascend your character (characters have caps on them so you can only level them so much until you need items to uncap them, same with weapons), ascend your weapons, get artifact equipment from any of the sets that aren't the super basic ones, and level up your characterer's talents all from activities that use resin, so you're basically permanently in need of it once you hit a certain point in the game.

People are mad about the resin system, understandably. It sucks, but it basically serves as a way to time-limit how much you can progress through the game so you stick with it over time...orrrrrrrr spend real money to recharge your resin. Hopefully they increase the cap or lessen the amount of time it takes to regen (I think it's 8 hours for a full restock? Something like that).

Anyway, that's how gatchas work and I'm sure BEAT is reading this now and like WHAT THE FUCK because that's how all non-gatcha people react whenever I tell them how a gatcha works.

So, for a followup here.
You can replenish resin with Primogems up to 6 times a day, for increasing cost each refill each day. So if you spend infinite money, you can increase 180 resin/day up to 540 resin/day.
8 hours will let you recover 60 resin, normally.

Lord help me I’m actually enjoying this game. I know better than to give a single penny to the gatcha monster, but as a free to play explore-em-up, it’s real fun. The game is generous enough with its characters and resources that I don’t feel pressured to have to spend anything to enjoy wandering the world.

So they've announced a few changes for Resin in 1.1, which is supposed to launch November 11th:
  • You'll be able to store up to 180 Resin instead of 120, which is great for people like me who only place once a day.
  • This also means you can accomplish the daily Battle Pass goal of spending 150 Resin without waiting the 5 or so hours needed to get back another 40 Resin to spend or using up one of the very limited Resin restoring items (or paying... please don't ever pay to refill Resin).
  • The weekly Battle Pass goal of spending 1600 Resin is being dropped to 1200, which when combined with the updated 180 bank limit makes it achievable without having to use in item to refill it. Under the current limits there's no way to reach that 1600 without spending at least something.
The developers have also confirmed the addition of the ability for players to place a teleport waypoint (though limited to 1 at a time), which will be handy for resuming exploration easier if you need to take a trip to a shop or the like.

There are some other improvements that have appeared in the Closed Beta Test for 1.1 but haven't been confirmed for the official release:
  • New 'compass' items which will direct you towards unclaimed Amenoculus/Geoculus; though it's unclear if these are one-time-user purchasable resource or permanent tool.
  • A new recipe which will convert unused resin into a resource to spend later, i.e. if you can only play for a few minutes on a particular day you could login in and convert your banked Resin to a consumable item via this recipe for later use.
  • A new repuatation system.
  • Other potential features as documented here.
I've reached Adventure Rank 35 and am about to attempt the next quest to increase my World Rank again. I've got 3 characters to Ascension Rank 4, 2 at Rank 3 and the rest are mostly Rank 1 (I just send them out on the Gathering quests each day). I've got 1 4-Star Weapon to Rank 4, and a handful of others at Rank 3. Right now the in game currency, Mora, seems to be my big limiting factor as upgrading *anything* begins to take a lot of it at the higher levels.

I hit AR 33 or 34 last night, but I'm really hurting for ascension stuff and talent stuff. Don't be a fool like I was! You can use alchemy to turn lower level masks/arrowheads and the like into the upgraded versions. You can make talent leveling material too! There's limitations on it, but the fact that you can do it at all is nice. It's a nice way to repurpose bad drops into good ones.

I'm very interested in the "compass" because I only have like...12 or so left in the Mondstat area but hell if I remember which ones I got and which I didn't, so even the online interactive map isn't TOO helpful...

I've got 2 at level 60 and 2 at level 50, mostly running Chongyun/Fischl/Mora/Barbara. It's not perfect and not optimal (Chongyun's skill making his attacks do elemental damage doesn't jive well with getting easy Superconduct reactions...but I can use Fischl, or just use judicious spacing to take advantage), but it's been going well so far. Part of me wishes I had instead used my glitter to get Razor and run with him and Kaeya instead or Mora/Chongyun but whatever, I've already leveled them all a bunch.

This game is fun, despite itself

I've been laid up for a couple of days after some minor surgery and playing GI and watching movies was basically all I did.

This game is actually honestly a real banger. I'm at adventure rank 16 and I think I understand all the various systems and how they interconnect and all of it feels very well thought out. Almost everything you do feels worthwhile in some way or another. The world is jam packed with things to do, most all of it fun and rewarding. It's visually very appealing and the music is way better than it has any right to be. If this wasn't a free to play gacha I think this board would be rabid over this thing.

So far I haven't felt compelled by the scarcity in the game to spend a dime. I think I've gotten...maybe sixty wishes for free? I feel maybe slightly overpowered and flush with resources to be honest. That said, I've gotten enough enjoyment out of it that as a consumer I feel like I should spend some money to pay these devs.

Here's the trailer for the upcoming 1.1 Update, supposed to release on November 11th that just went up today:

Installed this on my PS5 last night and it runs buttery smooth. Like instantly better, looks like 60fps to me. Loading still kind of sucks, not sure if it is installed on my portable HDD or the internal SSD.

I got Fischl last night through the meteor event and burned through a lot of my level up mats to get her on par with the rest of the party. People are gaga for her so I'm going to try and use her instead of Lisa.

she's great, being the go-to electro version of "object that spits out [element] constantly for a while" (like xiangling, xingqiu, etc.) and having a bow makes her perfect for a lot of the boss fights currently in the game. although i haven't used her as much after i got 3 beidous (one of the most fun characters in the game) and tartaglia, i still find her pretty irreplaceable on stormterror and the oceanid battle. and her main attacks become pretty respectable if you ever end up getting more copies and build a set for them (although i still think oz is the big selling point)

Yeah, I understand she is a much better archer option than the default one, Amber, who is apparently the worst character in the game. I don’t know, I have Keqing as my primary melee character and don’t want two electric characters. Also, I have only two archer characters, and only one fire character I think. My pulls have been kinda lopsided...
