Just beat the Mantis boss for the first time in Ys Origins. These games rule. There's nothing like getting that final blow on an Ys boss.

The last boss in Ys Seven is a real difficulty jump. It doesn’t help that I’ve been using the same three characters for the last several hours and now it wants me to use everyone. At least they’ve been passively gaining levels while out of the main party, so it’s just their skills that are deficient. The second to last boss is very easy, but the first phase of the final boss took me several attempts and eventually grinding out a level and upgrading a whole lot of equipment to beat, after which I got stuck on the second phase. So I’ve ground for another level and am hoping I’ve picked up enough drops in the process for a couple more equipment upgrades, and then I’ll try again. Hopefully I’ll beat it and then I’ll just have to deal with whatever it throws at solo Adol. I’ve actually gotten reasonable at the first phase, but I seem to be completely unable to avoid damage in the second. Needing to ration my healing items in case I need them for the next phase is making things harder than they would otherwise be, too.

A lot of games seem to ratchet up the difficulty at the end. Maybe people like that? Usually by the time I get to the end I’m ready to be done with a game. It is satisfying to be challenged and overcome it, but it’s tiresome to have a game I’d been managing pretty well suddenly put up a wall right at the end.

So, in Ys Seven when you do a skill, you party members will do their equipped skill in the same slot. It does reduced damage, but is free. If you want to level a powerful skill quickly, equip it in all slots and spam cheap skills with your lead character.

Probly should have mentioned that earlier. It works different in the later games, which is too bad because it's fun.

That’s a good tip! I had noticed the other characters also use their skills, and had even seen that they would level up their skills while not the active character sometimes, but it hadn’t occurred to me to put a pricey skill on a supporter while spamming a cheap one with the lead.

Anyway, I took another shot at the final boss after making a few more upgrades and maxing out my supply of healing items, and this time I beat it first try, probably using less than half of the healing stuff, so maybe I took levelling too far.

Beat Ys Origin with Yunica. Great game, took about 8 hours. I want to call the last boss cheap, but he isn't, I just kept making dumb mistakes on his last form.

I'm still having fun with it, so I'll give Hugo a shot.

I feel like this is a good place to drop this - good ol' coatlesscarl back from a four-year hiatus with an excellent NES rendition of Crimson Fighter from Ys VIII.

I didn't figure out that trick in Ys 7 until my second play when I did the highest difficulty. It's pretty well balanced, but I remember the boss of the wind dungeon and the solo arena boss being enormous roadblocks. The latter because you lose instantly if you miss a flash guard. Good way to perfecr your skill though!

Hugo is also grossly overpowered, at least in my experience. Once you get used to him (and get all three artifacts) you can basically cruise through the rest of his portion.

I just demolished the fire zone boss with him, so when he works, he WORKS. I just miss Yunica's speed.

I’ve barely dipped my toes into Origins, but I’ve liked what I’ve seen so far.

A map would be nice though, since, so far, every room looks pretty darn similar and I get turned around easily

Yeah, a map would be nice. You pretty much have to memorize each area - and then you get to the sand zone and it's just a mess lol. Not to mention the warp maze near the end of the game.

Beat it with Hugo. He really tears through bosses.

I can tell I'm going to enjoy playing as the third character you unlock. Fucker moves FAST, especially when you get the first artifact. This game rules

Alright, beat Ys Origin with the 3rd character. Spoilers for the plot for all three characters:

So, what was the canon story? I assume it was Toal's, as you get the secret boss fight and all the "good" characters survive through the end.

Toal was definitely my favorite character to play as - Hugo ripped bosses apart, but he was so slow, I found him frustrating most of the time if I'm honest. The Eyes of Fact are a cool weapon, I just wish Hugo was a bit more agile. Yunica is probably the best balanced... she controls great and yet has decent challenge. It'd be interesting playing with her again after Toal, though, since that guy is just a blast to play. He moves so fast!

Let's see... my favorite area is probably the fire zone, or maybe the demon zone right before the mirror area. Least favorite is definitely the sand zone... I hate the mechanics of that place. The dumb respawning enemies in that room just east of the first save point, where you have to kill some tunneling enemies before you have the ability to double jump or permanently kill the undead creatures is just, ugh.... The slippery floors can be annoying, too, especially with those birds (?) that latch on to you. I didn't know how to get them off as Hugo other than wait for them to do their thing lol.

Fantastic game. I kind of want to boot up Ys I and II Chronicles now lol

The canon story is Toal's, yeah. You can kind of think Yunica's story is what the people of Ys told about what happened with Darm, and Hugo's is probably the foundational myth for Esteria. The main purpose for Origins is to tie together the stories of the first five games (and their remakes) in a more solid way following the retcons and expanded bits of lore you got out of VI.

The backstory revealed in VI basically served as the lore underpinnings for the first six games (been a long time since I played through V, but eh), and ties in interesting ways with VII and VIII.

And that's Ys I cleared on PSP. That game is fantastic, other than the pointless backtracking all the way back dowm half of Darm Tower to get the item to unlock the last door. Bleh.

Onto Ys II.

Been playing Ys Origins, this is pretty good! Yunica's characterization is pretty grating though -- not a fan of the "You may have chopped have a dozen giant demons in half but you still have to be a blubbering pile of self-doubt because GIRL" trope one bit

I can see that, but at least she isn't an arrogant jerk the whole game like Hugo.

Hey, if I were to play the Ys series in order, it'd be:

Origin
I
II
Oath in Felghana
Memories of Celceta
V (fan translation)
VI
VII
VIII

...right? I always forget which remake overwrites which game.

Not quite, IV and VIII take place out of sequence:

Origin
I
II
IV (Memories of Celceta)
III (Oath in Felghana)
V
VIII
VI
VII
IX

I absolutely hated that bit in the PC Engine version. Surprised they haven't alleviated that over the years - it really is a terrible design decision.

It wouldn't be so bad if Darm Tower's outer parapets made any sense at all. Or had landmarks. Or a little popup that said, like, "11th Floor." As is, though, it's a super confusing maze that you're forced to go through three times.

At the Ice Ridge in Ys II. Can you even kill all those monsters in that guy's basement or do they just keep respawning? I left him hanging, hope that doesn't screw me over lol

They spawn forever, at least on PC Engine. If you’re playing through the whole series, absolutely play Felghana, but it’s worth playing the original version of three as well.

Ugh, the original version of 3, eh? I tried it years and years ago and hated it. Love Felghana though and am looking forward to replaying it (it was my first Ys).

I am really enjoying Ys I & II Chronicles. I played this once before when it came out and used a FAQ, but I don't remember hardly any of it and I'm enjoying puzzling out what to do and where to go this time around. Currently in the lava zone in II, and I finally know why none of the three characters in Origin could understand the Roos - Adol transforms into one in II!

Mightyblue

Actually, Toal can understand the Roos, but he has to be in demon form when you do it. There are a few interesting tidbits re:plot/characterization there, iirc?

Shit, I didn't think of that. They go away after you feed them, too - I should look up what they say online, I'm not playing through the whole game again anytime soon lol
