2023 WGA Writers Strike

So there hasn't actually been an official strike starting just yet, but by all accounts I'm seeing, it's going to happen. Today I read this article from Vanity Fair that isn't directly about the strike, but does delve pretty deep into the streaming media landscape that is a major reason WHY a strike is on the horizon.

I am very curious how these streaming services are going to shake out after, say, 5 years from now. This strike definitely feels like a turning point.

Haha, I'd take that. But I'm less concerned with that, and more concerned with how it would impact production schedules. S1 of Voyager and S2 of TNG are both much shorter seasons than regular because writers strikes cut both short. (TNG S2 is 22 episodes; S1 of VOY is 15). In today's world where whole 'seasons' of shows are only like, 10, they'd probably just delay production all together so I predict we'll see some uncomfortable dry spells.

I'm weirdly ok with the number of streaming networks shrinking? TV is best as a communal activity and the last few years have seen such a glut of content that it can feel isolating trying to strike up a casual conversation about shows. How many times have you had this exact exchange?

A: "Have you seen X? It's on Y and it's really good. I has Z in it!"

B: "No, but have you seen F? It's on G and it has H in it!"

A: "No I haven't seen it either."

A and B: "..."

If that article is to be believed, I hate we'll likely lose some diverse voices in creating larger scale shows, though.

I dunno, you guys. I obtained a copy of the script to Kill Bill Vol. 2 as written by an AI, and it's pretty powerful stuff:

BILL: And so began the legend of Pai Mei's Seven Point Palm Exploding Heart technique.

THE BRIDE: And what, pray tell, is the Eight Point Palm Exploding Heart technique?

BILL: Quite simply, the deadliest blow in all of martial arts. He hits you with his twelve fingertips at different pressure points on your body. And then he lets you walk away. But after you've taken five steps, your heart explodes inside your body, and you fall to the floor, dead.

Wow.
