It's just another way to get building parts. It's not a live service. Sheesh.

Where are you seeing microtransactions? From what I can find it looks like it’s all in-game currency, which is just typical random drops at that point. The question is whether the drop rates are egregious.
The buzz on twitter is that on release there will be a way to pay for the in-game currency with real money, which you can put in the pachinko machines.

I don't give a fuck about items with rare drop rates. I've been replaying BOTW and I actually kinda like hunting guardians for ancient cores.

But putting in the ability to pay for the in-game currency is fucking evil. There is no other possible description for it.

I think I found the source:

The worst writer at Kotaku wrote a clickbait article (that I will not link to) using the term gacha, but if you read the article it does not suggest real money will be involved. There is in-game gacha that Link can put imaginary video currency into.

It is true, however, that there is "buzz on twitter" using this article as source to say real money will be involved.

At this point, I do not believe there is any reporting saying that there will be the ability to pay for in-game currency.

I'm not deleting anything I said though because I stand by every word of it. Fuck that whole business model.

Somebody link an article already. Enough of this game of telephone.

edit: Actually, here's a better answer: the IGN article the Kotaku article was riffing on, to cut down on the telephone game even further. We don't even need to bring Kotaku into this, since it's just speculation based on what's quoted below.

Here is is the full text of the relevant section:

Why Yes, That Was a Giant Gacha Machine

In a recent Tears of the Kingdom trailer, we caught a brief glimpse of what looked like a giant gacha or gumball machine. And, yup, looks like it is! You can feed these machines a new item called "Zonai Charges" to receive a wealth of items in return, specifically Zonai devices used for building contraptions. For instance, Zonai devices include fans that can propel a vehicle, portable cooking pots, a flame emitter, and more. So if you're looking for technology to make your builds function, keep an eye out for these big gumball machines!

If Twitter is freaking out over a gumball machine in a game that is darkly hilarious that we've lost so much in basic fact checking and reading comprehension. AI readers will of course fail to differentiate that. Lol.

And while I'm not clear if I can make a machine like that as the player it sounds pretty cool.

I don't think Nintendo could even implement a real microtransaction system in one of their games if they wanted to. They suck at that kind of stuff.

I've been keping exposure low, but everything I'm seeing so far is emphasizing all the physics playground stuff I never really had the interest in pursuing in BotW. I hope that stuff is fairly straightforward and/or not particularly necessary, and it's only being highlighted so much because it's the new hotness. But for some reason it's tempering my excitement.

I'm also not particularly interesting in the physics playground stuff. I think it looks cool and has potential to make it hugely popular, but maybe is not for me. Will definitely wait for reviews and word of mouth to hear more about how it's integrated into the experience as a whole.

It's certainly something I hope a person can do as they want, get as much out of it as they put in, but that Nintendo keeps the necessity of physics/crafting to a minimum. I'm already lukewarm on Breath of the Wild. I don't need more reasons to be disappointed.

Man, I am so much on the other end of the physics thing. I don't particularly care about the plot (unless there is a point where you unlock playing as Zelda but I think we all know that ain't happening), I just want to fuck around and see if I can attach a tree to a fork or whatever.

All their mobile games have them, and they even made 3DS games with them. They honestly just seem to hate that monetization model

Also there's a prominent Zelda youtuber who keeps calling the gachapon machines "pachinko machines" and it is surprisingly irritating

This is what happens when we - as a society - cannibalize professional media in favor of crowdsourcing that stuff to amateurs on the internet

Nah this person is usually pretty knowledgable but they keep making this one particular mistake after multiple videos, it's like your grandma calling a Playstation "the Nintendo", charming but abrasive to the inner pedant

Mechanical details are emerging through marketing channels. For instance, you can save recipes.

can't believe monolith were teasing the moneyless gacha system they were going to implement in tears of the kingdom all the way back in xenoblade 2

I have heard a rumor that somebody has gotten a leaked copy of Tears of the Kingdom running in an emulator. I have not substantiated this rumor.

If this is true, the sensitivity of spoilers that can be encountered will have increased. It may, for example, include plot details exceeding those that have been included in marketing materials. Please adjust your spoiler preparedness level accordingly.

I can't believe Punished Tingle was Ganondorf the entire time! It makes the whole series make so much more sense in retrospect!

My copy got dropped on my doorstep by a delivery-human at like 11am today, AND LET ME TELL YOU HOW HARD IT WAS TO NOT START PLAYING DURING WORK HOURS. Anyways, I'm going to start playing it very soon.

I really miss having an instant, summon-anywhere magic horse like Torrent from Elden Ring.

Finished with the first of the 4 regional main-quest leads. Went to the Northwest one,

and worked through the stuff with the Rito and Tulin. It was interesting how seamlessly it segued from overworld exploration to an isolated "dungeon" setup as you went through the floating island chunks and airships, with a few shrines along the way as checkpoints, culminating in the final "temple". Took me a while before I realized "Hey wait, this is a dungeon!" The temple itself was as short as the BotW divine beast "dungeons" but like I said, I consider it the final part of the overall "dungeon." The boss was... a spectacle, and kind of annoying to wrestle with the camera and judge distance fighting in 3D space, but it did feel suitably epic. And the reward is a Tulin ghost so I can (my guess is), summon him and do his forward-wind-gust thingie any time. Which could come in handy, I suppose, especially while navigating sky islands?
