Playstation 5 (You Know, the Sequel to PlayStation 4)

I did, but it was the God of War: Ragnarok bundle, which is $60 more than the vanilla disc drive PS5.

my ps5 is basically a super ps4 pro atm
Honestly, even playing upgraded PS4 games at high resolution and a solid 60 FPS feels pretty luxurious to me. God of War is still a really good-looking game, and seeing it run so smoothly is still quite impressive IMO. Same for thing for FFVII Remake.

That said, while I'm not sure the new Ratchet & Clank is the absolute best game on the PS5, it's still the one that felt the most next-gen to me. Looks incredible, runs pretty well even with some ray-tracing enabled, and they make great use of the SSD to mask load times.

Oh totally I think it works great as an enhanced ps4, most of my game time has been playing the ps4 versions of elden ring and ffxiv (both ps5 versions have performance issues in comparison) and I’m still happy with the system.

Thanks for your input on r&c, I’ll check it out at some point when there’s a good sale. Also interested in TLOU Part 1 but wish it wasn’t a full price ps5 game when I can just play the ps4 version on ps+ for free.

I’m not sure what technical issues the PS5 version of Elden Ring is supposed to have, but I played 65 hours of it without incident. Ran pretty smoothly, IMO.

the framerate often time drops to around 45fps, not the end of the world or anything, but the PS4 version via BC runs at a relatively locked 60fps but at a lower resolution with lower graphical settings. i personally haven't tried out the ps5 version myself, as saves weren't compatible between the two (you can only upgrade ps4 saves to ps5 once), so i decided to just stick to the ps4 version.

its nothing as poor as ffxiv's ps5 version though (which seriously needs fixing).

I wasn't aware of any issues with FFXIV - but then again I play at 1080p with 30FPS capped. I assume the issues show at 60FPS or at 4k?

yeah the issues show up at 60fps, the game has frequent performance drops for seemingly no reason whatsoever, regardless of where you are in the world, or even your resolution, whereas the ps4 pro version via bc will run at 1440p/60 without issues.

I finally got my PS5 back out of storage and hooked up as I moved into my new place, and decided to christen it with a new game, so I picked up Astro's Playroom and man, it's true, that game is way better than it has any right to be. It's just...pure. Wholesome and fun.

I've never ratcheted a clank before, but it seems like praise is pretty universal. I think Horizon Forbidden West is next up for me, though.

I'm hearing that the PS4 is pretty much orphaned at this point. Big name releases will go exclusively to the next generation consoles... and hopefully that will include the Xbox Series S, despite third parties balking about making software for it.

PS Plus is about to get a little less plus:

PSA: Claim The PS5’s Amazing PS Plus Collection Before It Disappears

Sony broke the news on Wednesday in a new PlayStation Blog post about upcoming PS Plus games. “We also wanted to provide an update on the PlayStation Plus Collection that has been offered as a benefit to PlayStation Plus members on PS5 since 2020,” read a paragraph buried at the end. “On May 9 the PlayStation Plus Collection will no longer be offered. If you haven’t redeemed the titles in this collection yet, you can still do so until May 9, which will enable you to access those titles even after this date for as long as you remain a PlayStation Plus member.”

The games in question:
  • Batman: Arkham Knight
  • Battlefield 1
  • Bloodborne
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 (Zombie Chronicles Edition)
  • Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy
  • Days Gone
  • Detroit: Become Human
  • Fallout 4
  • Final Fantasy 15
  • God of War
  • Infamous Second Son
  • Monster Hunter World
  • Mortal Kombat X
  • Ratchet and Clank
  • Resident Evil 7: Biohazard
  • The Last Guardian
  • The Last of Us Remastered
  • Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End
  • Until Dawn

I probably won't end up playing most of these games, but you bet I'm adding them all to my library with immediate effect.

The free year of PS+ that came with my PS5 is ending later this month (whenever the 1 year anniversary of Elden Ring is), and I currently see no reason to resubscribe. Xbox Live has a real advantage in that department.

I successfully performed a teardown and reassembly of my PS5 Dualsense controller. I was attempting to fix some slight analog drift that had developed some time ago, and early tests indicate that it worked successfully. My suspicion turned out to be accurate: I was betting there was hair or other debris deep in the analog stick chassis, and I did indeed find some small hairs in there. But, in order to actually get to the sticks, you basically have to take out everything and unplug a lot of stuff from the motherboard. The only thing I did NOT want to do was desolder the vibration components from the motherboard, and thankfully, as long as you're careful, you can still get to the underlying stick container with those still attached to the motherboard.

Speaking of this here console, I was recently reminded that PS5 controllers have headphone jacks built into them. That turned out to be just what I needed, because I've been playing Resident Evil Village and I don't want the sound effects to give my son nightmares as he falls asleep in the other room. The feature works really well, game audio transitions to the headphones as soon as you plug them in and you can adjust the volume level through the console's system menu. I'm sure this is old news to a lot of people, but I've mostly been a PC gamer for the last 10 years and so it didn't occur to me to try this before. It's neat!

Yeah, it's a nice feature. PS4 controllers have the headphone jack too, and it works with tv shows and movies as well.

It's especially welcome because the PS5 follows in the PS4's tradition of recognizing that my Bluetooth headphones exist and then saying "OOPS LOL WE CAN'T CONNECT TO THEM" at the last second.

The bluetooth headphone thing is infuriating. Why?? Why won't they do that??

I definitely got some use out of the headphone jack when I lived with my ex, though, playing Elden Ring in the background while she was in a work meeting or playing D&D or somesuch.

I like my PS5 quite a bit but I've had it since launch and I still don't fully grok the UI, which is especially baffling because it looks like the PS4 UI but starts to get very funky once you use the PS button.

I was trying like mad to pair my airpods to the PS5 for quiet time purposes and whenever I did, it said it couldn't do audio output through them?

I ended up just pairing them directly to my TV, which is a better solution anyway. Still, it might have been nice to remember the headphone jack in the controller.

In my experience, airpods don't like to play nice with literally anything but other Apple devices.
I get a kick out of how aggressively they’ll pair with any Apple devices they can find. I was sitting next to a lady on a plane who probably tried to pair a set to her computer ten times but they kept popping up on my and presumably everyone else’s ipad instead.

PS5 interface is fine. Cards are ignorable at worst. The reversing of the PS-button takes some getting used to but I think is honestly how it should have been all along. You shouldn't want an accidental press of the button to suspend the game and exit to the main system os - turning that into a long-press makes sense. And doing a short-press to bring up the most used system functions as a temporary overlay also makes sense. There's a logic and consideration behind that change, the only problem with it is telling gamers to adapt to something new.

Yeah, I see the logic behind it but something about it still feels unwieldy and counterintuitive in a way that the PS4 menus didn't. I wouldn't consider them confusing enough to have brought up myself, but I agree with people who have the complaint.

Find the PS5 interface lowkey annoying in comparison to the PS4. Brings to mind UIs following touch UI design despite... not... using... touch.

I haven't touched the PS5 in a while, but I do remember having some trouble adapting to the new menu/layout and doing stuff there. That's without getting into the actual game playing aspect of it.

I think I figured it out eventually, but it wasn't nearly as intuitive to me as the PS4 and previous.

I think I just gravitate towards what I'm using most. When I first got the PS5, the interface felt off.

PS5 is now my primary gaming console. Now I think the PS5 interface is good and the PS4 interface feels off.

I think the only truly terrible interface I've experienced was Windows Vista. Vista was some hellish combination of traditional Windows and a tablet interface and it did neither well.
