it's hilarious that todd phillips spent all that time and energy moaning about how edgy and boundary pushing comedy isn't allowed because of political correctness and then he lost the oscar for best adapted screenplay to taika waititi's funny hitler movie

A youtube commenter makes a compelling argument that Roko's Basilisk is real but only for leftists, especially the ones on general-purpose social media like Twitter:

The reason you don't think it's scary is because 'being tortured forever' is too vague. If we make it more specific by, say, locking you into a room and not letting you leave until you convince a Libertarian that caring about other people is a good thing, then I think it becomes a lot scarier.

What if the real roko's basilisk was all the fascist encroachment through technology we encountered along the way

It's eternal hell for the Libertarian too, it's a very efficient system.

I don’t think so. Mostly because a Libertarian thinks others are below them.

They just laugh at “idiots” and pat themselves on the back while fondling their extra large deluxe pleather covered coffee table version of Atlas Shrugged (still in shrinkwrap).

That's an interesting summation of the pandemic situation.

Wow, that was amazing. Also nice to read about lawyers who use their powers for the Good of the People.

But it's all great.

My understanding is that film was recently voted the greatest film of all time. Also it's about suburban mom who moonlights as a prostitute I think, hence the McMahon O face.

I think it's more about the film nerd reaction to such an out-there pick. Trust me, it's about as non-"broey" of a choice as you can get. The movie is three and a half hours long, was directed by a woman, and a lot of it consists of a single mother's daily routine in almost real time. She moonlights as a prostitute, but it's not played for titillation at all.

My thoughts on the S&S choice of Jeanne Dielman are that at least it'snot Citizen Kane but also light-hearted amusement because picking a previously obscure French film from the 70s does come off as a lot of the voters showing off, but it's also made a lot of Twitter film bros mad so the whole thing is kind of fun.

Some more context about that:
"Sight and Sound is a British monthly film magazine published by the British Film Institute (BFI). It conducts the well-known, once-a-decade Sight and Sound Poll of the Greatest Films of All Time, ongoing since 1952."
